Daedalus Turntable Base
« on: 24 Apr 2016, 03:10 pm »
I asked Lou to make me a 2" turntable base utilizing Daedalus Isolation Devices (DiDs). Lou made it out of cherry and maple. He recessed the DiDs about halfway into the bottom so the total height of the base is about 2.5". As always, Lou's work is exceptional and the base is beautiful. He also inserted some brass plates to help kill resonances. Here are some pics.

And here is what it looks like in my system.

Now it's time to listen to some records. :thumb:

Thanks Laura!   :thumb:
We really liked this piece and decided to make a couple more. Alex at WyWires has tried using the DIDs under his turntable base with great results and that combined with Laura's request piqued my interest. At Axpona Mat form VPI asked to take four of the DiDs home to play with and wants us to build him a base like Laura's, we are also building one to send to Alex and use at the Newport show with the custom VPI table.

I can't wait to hear how this works for Laura!!

It works very well. I have listened to a lot of records since I installed the base under my TT. While I did not do before and after testing because way too much hassle, I can tell you that the background is silent and there is a lot of detail in the music with instrument separation. The bass seems a little tighter than before. It does a very good job of killing resonances and isolating the TT. Very happy with the base and its performance. :D :thumb:

OK, the DiD TTP is now an official product!   TTP (TurnTable Platform.

This pair are for the Newport show, one in our room and one for another VPI room.
You can see one in position on top of the rack with the DiDs installed underneath. The other is on it's edge to show the bottom with brass to control resonances and recesses for the DiDs.

2" thick maple/walnut/cherry 24" x18" Total height with the DiDs is 2.5".

We will really put these through their paces at the show! I'm sending them to Alex (WyWires) Monday and he will do some comparisons as well.

This really isn't limited to only turntables.   ;)   You can build them for tube amps or even SS equipment too.

Yes I will be building a pair as amp stands for my Singapore distributor. For equipment other than turntables I can install 1/4-20 inserts for spikes and the DiDs would then go directly under the gear. Obviously we can do these whatever configuration is needed.  If possible I feel the best use of the DiD is directly in contact with the chassis, but on turntables that is often problematic.
feel free to contact me via email or phone

thanks,
lou

Beautiful work Lou!

Laura it is nice to see you appreciating his great craftsmanship and even spurring him on by refining your system.

One thing you might want to note in listening to isolation is hearing Music in time. How a note decays.  Good isolation will bring out separation of instruments well.  The equipment isn't dealing with as much vibration and is focused on the musical signal supplied - so as the music proceeds, there isn't any latent vibration occuring after the notes.  Leads to great separation of instruments, imaging, Taunt presentation. Tne thing I noticed when I refined the isolation in my system was piano music.  A flurry of notes broke out into individual notes with less overlap. Listen to a quick pianists run up or down the piano.

Sharp transients are sharper. When the music resonated and decayed, it was there in spades too.

Lou's DIDs do this without imparting any tonal changes.

Is that a Modwright OPPO 105 on the other top shelf?

I was considering getting the mod for my digital front end - I have a 105 in my ht room.
My Audio Research CD 9 is nice but I am looking for something with more natural sound
Feel free to pm me with insights
Thanks
