Super black

Perhaps you've heard of new black paints that are super black and absorb about 94% of all light hitting them.  I ordered some to play with.  It is indeed super black, no doubt about it.

I was thinking this might be a good paint to use in a home theater application where you do not want any light reflecting off the speakers.  It would certainly do the trick there.  But I don't know how the speakers would look without any reflections.  Might look spooky and 2D.  And I have no idea how it would hold up like our standard black finishes do.

This paint is obviously expensive.  But for that application, it might be perfect.

Just thought it was interesting.

It might be cool to contrast the SEAS white drivers, which could look as if they are floating.

What percentage of light hitting it does regular black absorb?

Does it look like the asphalt?  For the hardcore or dedicated HT I can see the attraction.  We have a pair of Dennis’ original BMR in your optional boxes in black that are a little over 4 years old.  They pull double duty in the family room HT and main system.  I honestly never notice them once the lights are off.

The closest thing I can say to describe the effect is that it looks like very black velvet but is completely flat to the touch.

It depends on whether the topcoat is gloss, satin or matte.  But none of those come close.

The car needs to be electric, night running with lights off would never be seen or heard. The New Prohibition Vehicle (until it's t-boned).

I'm thinking a super black base and tiger stripes or skeletal pattern would be amazing.

With 99.4% absorption do you end up with a black hole…or does the object become invisible?

A super black front baffle with super white (or other color) sides (all other sides) might be interesting.

The guy Stuart Semple sells a version that's about 95% of vantablack at a fraction of the cost. I've purchased from him before.
