Tip of the hat to a young vixen in college  by the name of Dianne who 1st introduced me.

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley's version is my favorite but...
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel is "our song."

As hard as I try, I must admit, this one at least makes me fight back tears every time I hear it. . . .however, most of the time, a drop of saline makes it through my defenses.  Let me take that back. . .I always lose on this one.

Elvis' version of "Can't help falling in love with you".  And I don't even like Elvis.

2nd choice is Pavoratti singing "Nessun Dorma."  It pissed me off to find out recently that it is NOT a love song at all, but it sure sounds like one.   :duh:

The Rolling Stones:  "Wild Horses"

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady, you know HOW I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you've decided to show me the same
But no sweet, vain exits or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away

I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom, but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let's do some living after love dies
Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them some day

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them some day

If y'all would be so kind as to indulge me, I'd like to share a brief reminiscence inspired by the topic of this thread...

Back in the Eighties, when I was still grinding away in rock bands, I met a girl named...well it doesn't really matter now, does it? Anyway, we were young and in love and it was a crazy time and like most couples I guess we had our good times and bad times and we had a song that we called our own - Thank You from Led Zeppelin II. It was one of those crazy goofy things that young couples do like have nicknames for each other and so on...But as is so often the case, young love burns brightly and sweetly but briefly and eventually her old man got out of prison so we went our separate ways. But you know what, we've all heard about the power of music to dredge up old memories and bring back long-buried emotions...tonight I pulled out my copy of Led Zep II after reading all your posts. I listened to our old song and thought to myself with a smile:

Damn, you can really hear the tape hiss on this recording...

"Let Him Roll"  by Guy Clark

Well, he was wino, tried and true.
Done about everything there is to do.
He worked on freighters, an' he'd worked in bars.
He worked on farms, an' he'd worked on cars.
It was white port that put that look in his eye,
Grown men get when they need to cry.
We sat down on the curb to rest,
And his head just fell down on his chest.

He says: "Every single day it gets,
"Just a little bit harder to handle and yet. . ."
Then he lost the thread and his mind got cluttered,
And the words just rolled off down the gutter.

Well, he was elevator man in a cheap hotel,
In exchange for the rent on a one room cell.
An' he's old: years beyond his time,
No thanks to the world, and the white port wine.

So he said: "Son." He always called me son.
Said: "Life for you has just begun."
An' then he told me the story I'd heard before
How he fell in love with a Dallas whore.

Now, he could cut through the years to the very night,
When it ended in a whore house fight.
And she turned his last proposal down,
In favor of being a girl about town.

Now it's been seventeen years, right in line,
He ain't been straight in none of the time.
It's too many days of fightin' the weather,
An' too many nights of not being together.
So he died.

Instrumental break.

An' when they went through his personal effects,
In among the stubs from the welfare checks,
Was a crumblin' picture of a girl in a door,
An' an address in Dallas, and nothin' more.

An' the welfare people provided the priest,
A couple from the mission down the street,
Sang "Amazing Grace", and no one cried,
'Cept some lady in black, way off to the side.

We all left and she's standing there,
A black veil covering her silver hair.
Ol' One-Eyed John said her name was Alice,
An' she used to be a whore in Dallas.

So let him roar, Lord, let him roll.
I bet he's gone to Dallas, rest his soul.
Just you let him roll, Lord, let him roar
He always said that heaven
Was just a Dallas whore.

Just you let him roar, Lord, let him roll.
I bet he's gone to Dallas, rest his soul.

After doing this song for 50 years he still gets shaken.

for all time: Your Song by Elton John.

more recently: Grenade by Bruno Mars.
Honestly, I love the violent imagery in this song of unrequited love. Great lines, even if the song may not stand the test of time.

I'd catch a grenade for you
Throw my hand on a blade for you
I'd jump in front of a train for you
You know I'd do anything for you
I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for you, baby
But you won't do the same

This song says it all without saying a word.
This guy is a true master of music and emotion.
It was written for his father.
