July 30. Soulive's 10th anniversary celebration with guest John Scofield. THere were two other guests, got there late(a rainy day) and missed out on the opening band, Ivan Neville?s Dumpstaphunk and Soulive first guest trumpeter Christian Scott. Stayed through Scofield's appearance then left when the male vocalist guest came on.

Wilco at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in Royal Oak, Michigan. Incredible performance, incredible set list, opportunity to talk to band members after the show, top 3 live shows I have ever seen, hands down.

Do not miss the opportunity to see Wilco live if you like there music even a little bit. They have to be one of the best touring bands around right now.

On Friday July 17 I saw Blind Pilot, Andrew Bird and The Decemberists at Marymoor Park in Redmond WA. Andrew Bird is incredibly talented and The Decemberists were simply outstanding. They played The Hazzards of Love from beginning to end plus lots of older material. Shara Worden of My Brightist Diamond and Becky Sparks of Lavendar Diamond sang the female vocal parts and blew the audience away with their rendition of Heart's Go Carzy on You during the encore.

On Sunday July 19, at the same venue, Ra Ra Riot, The New Pornogrpahers and Death Cab for Cutie. This was one rockin' show from beginning to end. Ra Ra Riot is a great up and coming band doing rock n roll with a cello and violin to complement the guitars, keyboards and drums. No one deos power pop rock n roll better than The New Pornographers. Even without Neko Case (she was touring promoting Middle Cyclone) they had everyone on their feet dancing. Death Cab was a great ending to an awesome music weekend.

Saw John Scofield at Madison Square Park on Wednesday. What a great free show - and he was rocking. Beautiful weather, Shake Shack burgers - a perfect evening.

Last night I saw Old Crow Medicine Show, The Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earle and Dave Rawlings & Gillian Welch at the Beacon.

This is the 3rd time I've seen The Felice Brothers and truthfully they were EH. If that were the first time I saw them, I wouldn't feel compelled to see them again. Simone isn't touring with them and they just didn't sound good. Last night I thought they sound better on cd than live.   :nono:  Might as well stay at home and listen and save some money.   I did hear something recently on WFUV...something about Simone recording with someone else but I didn't really catch the story.

I really didn't know much about Justin Townes Earle other than he was Steve's son. He is one very goofey guy. His stage persona is sort of like Pee Wee Herman. Pee Wee with a guitar singing very twangy country music...too country for my liking.

Old Crow was amazing...they are tight group of musicians and they are definitely worth seeing live... :banana piano:

And Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch were AWESOME. One of the highlights  were when the entire gang joined Dave and Gillian to sing Look At Miss Ohio.   8) 8) 8)

On Aug 12th ,I have 4 tickets to Tracy Chapman at the Park West, in Chicago, really nice club venue , she is on my bucket list so I'm ecstatic to see her. My expectations are so high, they are probably well beyond human comprehension. I've always loved what she does.
I JUST LOVE THE MUSIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Enough said.

I'm ashamed to say I don't have a good tuner at home  so I usually listen in the car as I am fashionably late for work.

Just got back from a Jones Street Station, Deer Tick, and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals concert at Brooklyn's Prospect Park.  JSS and Deer Tick were quite good, but Grace and her band rock the place down!  What a killer concert, better than her performance at Webster Hall last December.  Bryan Dondero, the original bassist left the band early this year, and was replaced by Catherine Popper (formerly played with Ryan Adams).  The band also added a second guitarist, Benny Yurco to give them a new direction and a fuller sound.  They were super tight tonight, and Grace's pipes were wailing.  Her whole body was into every song, and she was a frenetic bundle of energy all concert.  She was like the energizer bunny, times 10.  I've never seen her danced around the stage as much before.  The 3 concerts I wanted to attend the most this summer ended up as also being the 3 best concerts in terms of performance: Camera Obscura, Jenny Lewis, and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals.  It's been a great summer of live music.

Ed, I know you don't like to drive into the city, but you missed one great concert.  Levi was a poor substitute.  :(

Levi was a poor substitute.

What...did he jump up on stage and tried to grope Grace?  :o

One more week and the music at the Bandshell wraps up for the year. They had some excellent acts this year.

WHen Levi called I was hanging with some friends for dinner, so I couldn't make it.

He tried to sneak under the chain fence to get to the private section, but the guards beat him back.  You can take Levi out of Queens, but you can't take the Queens out of Levi.
You should have brought your friends.  It was a great concert, everyone was dancing.  Grace does that to people.

We have a small venue in San Francisco called Yoshi's.  Mostly Jazz acts, great acoustics, the club is about 2 years old.  I find myself listening to the music and placement of instruments and vocals at live shows more now that I have a new found appreciation for music.  It was easy last night at this show at one point there were 40 people on stage.  I spoke to one of the musicians after the show and he described the effort as a collaboration of a seperate genres.  It was a great event!

Bela Fleck.....screening his new movie Throw Down Your Heart. Playing in a little private independent theater with about 100 of us. Bela came out after the film and played for us.  Talk about an intimate session!  He said he will be touring with some of the musicians from Africa soon....check it out if you are into Bela.

Allman Brothers Band and Widespread Panic, Jones Beach Theatre, Aug 27th

Greg's voice is shot but the band can still bring it.  Powerful and tight.
Derek Trucks is an amazing guitar player!  Excellent rhythm section, real pros.  Three drummers give that percolated and trademark Allman sound.  Love it!  They opened with some great stuff from their Eat a Peach / Fillmore East period.  Fine with me as that was their absolute zenith, a band at the height of their powers, never again to be matched.  And they stuck with it for the majority of the show, with a few excursions into latter stuff, and some Greg Allman solo territory.  But for the most part, it was the Allmans as most folks wanna hear them.

Widespread Panic opened.  Never seen them, nor am I familiar with their music.  Very ho-hum first half of their set.  I was not impressed.  Then something kicked in and they got real interesting for the entire 2nd half of their set......especially when some of the Allman boys stepped in one by one to jam with them.  They played some excellent super tight, infectious and explosive jams.  Serious jam band without too much excessive canoodling to the point of being tedious.  At times, the jams built some serious tension.  By the time they were done, I had some new-found respect for them.  Their sound was huge, fluid and very impactful.  Even moreso than the Allmans.

Fun night, gorgeous weather in an ocean setting.

The creativity / imagination exhibited in every facet of this performance is as good as it gets.  It's simply amazing that people with that much talent walk among us.

Bought the CD which includes DVD Audio.  Looking forward to comparing it to the standard CD.

Saw John Pizzarelli and his quartet at Peconic Bay winery this past Friday night. I took the day off and my wife and I spent the day walking through a little seaside town on the east end of Long Island. We bought some art and had a nice freshly caught flounder dinner.

Then we drove to the show, had a few glasses of wine with some friends who joined us for the event. The show was very pleasant and reminiscent of what I would expect back in the 40's and 50's of a guitar playing crooner. Lots of old tome songs and some interesting stories to go along with them. All in all, very pleasant.

The show was outside on the vinyard lawn and the evening was perfect. A beautiful sunset and an amazing full moon to light everything up with just a light breeze to keep away any mosquitos.

9/1 & 9/2 Widespread Panic / Allman Brothers Band

Been a year since I last saw Panic and had to get my fill.  Was able to talk the wife into flying to Chicago for some fun times and good shows.  She was quite the trooper at 7 months pregnant!

First night ABB was fantastic!  Always love hearing Derek and Warren jam.  Dave Mason of Traffic and Buddy Guy came out to jam on a few tunes.  This was a nice treat.

The Panic show that followed wasn't the best time I've had, but this was due to the wasted teens nearby that kept talking and took 1000 pictures of their group.  One chick actually started to mosh and ripped up chairs during the Bowleged Woman encore.....very strange.  This group was clearly there for the party.

The second night I only went to the Panic opener so I could meet up with my sister-in-law and wife for dinner.  Panic played their entire self titled album which was a first.  Had a great time and was a much more WSP like crowd.
