Favorite drummers?
« on: 7 Aug 2009, 01:19 am »
Was posting how I really like Silversun Pickups' drummer.  I've read these posts elsewhere but don't recall reading one here.   What are some of your favorite drummers?

Mine:
Tool's Danny Carey
Smashing Pumpkins' Jimmy Chamberlin
Silversun Pickups' Christopher Guanlao

Believe it or not, I am not super fond of Dream Theaters' drummer, Mike Portnoy.  He is just alright IMHO.  He gets lots of praise but I don't see the big draw except that he is fast.  There isn't the kind of rhythms that I find enticing.

Just saw My Bloody Valentine at All Points West.  I thought they sucked but they did have a great drummer too.

Strange coincidence? My favorites all heil from cities I've live in.  (Seattle(sort-of,lived near, not in), LA, Chicago).

Doesn't have to be rock, although my choices express my biases towards rock music, modern even.  I am a big fan of Cream but I can't say their drum ever stood out to me, not in the same way at least.  Its all personal.

Bill Bruford

Bill Bruford is excellent and definitely makes my top five, but I think the top spot for me goes to Neil Peart from Rush.  Out of the people I have had the pleasure of seeing, he is by far the best.

The others that round out my top five in no particular order are:

John Bonham - Led Zep
Ginger Baker - Cream, Solo
Terry Bozzio - Zappa, Bozzio Levins Stevens

Special mention (just because I like him and have seen him play quite a lot - not because I think he is in the same class as the guys I mentioned):

Carter Beauford - Dave Matthews Band

Agree on Bruford, Bozzio. went to see UK at a small theatre here and was dissapointed that Bruford had already left the band, but his replacement was Bozzio.....so it worked out ok! also agree on Ginger Baker and Moon. Of course, there's John Bonham and Neal Pert. I love the guy from ACDC even though he doesn't do anything fancy....just has a great feel to his playing. Carter Beauford from DMB is pretty awesome. Lot of fancy stuff there, but still makes it drive.

You know who's actually a pretty damn good player is Phil Collins. I met Chester Thompson once (another Zappa alum, who's no slouch himself) and he told me he envied Phil's natural ability.

Of course, being a Crowed House fan, I always enjoyed the late Paul Hestor though I doubt he'll ever be considered one of rock/pops greats.

I was driving the other day and listening to the radio.  Message In A Bottle by the Police was playing.  I hadn't listened to the Police in a long time and I was reminded how good a drummer Stuart Copeland was/is.

Philly Joe Jones for his rhythm & steadiness.
Tony Williams for pure energy, propulsion and sensitivity.
Al Foster for that delicate touch, he is a master of playing soft.

Funny thing about Smashing Pumpkins/Jimmy Chamberlin, thought SP were great in the Gish/Siamese Dreams era then sucked after...turns out Chamberlin had entered rehab post SD and another drummer came in.  Chamberlin came back but I can't say I ever got into them again.
