Last night my wife and I were to a tequila tasting - lovely stuff! - at a local mexican joint.  They had a band playing there that was unreal.  Three pieces, a stand up bass, electric guitar and a drummer.  They sounded like a mix of Stray Cats, Social Distortion and Los Lobos maybe?  They definately had the funk and beat of the cats with the anger and edge of SD but they did many standards (good golly miss molly) in Spanish with a whole new twist!  It was just awesome and that's not just the tequila talking!

I'd love to dig up some kind of this type of music, recorded.  These guys don't have anything and they are breaking up, Saturday is their last gig.  Too bad, because they could all play.  Any suggestions welcome.

It's probably more considered to be latin flavored country, but The Mavericks are pretty cool (for country).

Also, again, not Tejano, but Carlos Vives is Colombian rock with a lot of Colombian folk as a base - lots of accordian, but in a cool way.

I'm not sure that I personally understand how to identify Tejano style, actually.  But I'm a white boy (though I do speak Spanish pretty fluently).

I can second the Los Lonely Boys.  My wife bought me their CD and I actually liked it much more than I thought I would.  I was afraid it was going to be a latin version of Insync or the Backstreet Boys, but was pleasantly surprised.  It's 3 brothers - they write, sing and play and have pretty good vocal harmonies.  I'd say it's sung about half english and half spanish.  The CD I got has a bonus DVD with some acoustical performances.  Recommended.

The Blazers are an East LA Band that fit the music type you described as does the Paladins, although the paladins are more rockabilly and less tejano

Try some old Dough Sahm and the Sir Douglas Band, especially "Texas Tornado" from 1973 if you can find it (vinyl only, as far as I know - if anyone knows where I can get this on CD, please let me know).  Guests include Dr. John, David "Fathead" Newman, and Flacco Jimenez.

Great band, but not really tejano/rockabilly

Besides this one, all of the Texas Tornado releases are good tejano music, my favorite is "Live from the Limo, vol 1"
