I just picked up Muse the other day, very good indeed.

My favorite for 2004 is Wilco - A Ghost is Born

I'd say the Libertines new album is the best I've heard this year.

How about Escondida from Jolie Holland. I dont know that its the best but it could be the most overlooked. Probably not for everyone as it is sort of southern blues-folk-jazz.

Thanks for this discussion -- I went and bought Wilco (although an older one; they didn't have the new one) and Muse.  I like them.

Tone Depth & Sultan - Broken. A 12" released on Swift Records out of Athens.

It's stunning dance vinyl. Chances are most here would like it, but will never hear it. Pretty laid back stuff.

Wilco's new one--A Ghost is Born.

I've listened to it probably over 50 times now.   :o   Try to at least once a day.  To say I like it may be a bit of an understatement.

I saw Wilco 2 nights ago in St. Louis.  GREAT!!!!

Time to pull A Ghost is Born out again. I bought it when it was first out (because YHF is one of my alltime favorites) and listened to it several times. I liked it but it didn't strike me as one of their best (okay, so maybe Less than You Think annoyed me--12minutes :o ).  But there music does tend to grow on you the more you listen, so here I go..

Bought on a whim, but it really opened my eyes to some bands I had never heard before like the Shins, Zero 7, Colin Hay, Iron and Wine and Thievery Corporation.   Even has a cool song by Simon and Garfunkel that I had never heard called "The only living boy in New York" and a great song by Coldplay.

It's not as good as Wilco (a great choice) but, for me, it was really cool hearing all these new and very talented bands.  Take a listen on Amazon to see if it's your cup of tea.  Warning: some of the songs on Garden State take a while to "warm up" to but if you give them a chance, you may find something new.  Cool stuff!

J

PS- Really check out The Shins and Zero 7.  Strange names but really cool music.  Also, Frau Frau (think that's the name).  I love this compilation and will most likely pick up some of the other recordings from these bands.

Man, add me to the Wilco- A Ghost is Born list.

I haven't been in a rush to get this one (big mistake).. just from reading a few reviews that it was a bit too mello, not as good as YHF etc. but from all the positive feedback here didn't hesitate to get it Friday night.
Conclusion- Me likey a lot!!!
Tracks 1 thru 4.. all I can say is WOW!
EVERY NOTE has meaning I think is a good way to sum up this one.
May need to reaccess my personal favorite now.. but I'm glad.

Let's see-
MUSE - Absolution, makes me want to drive a little faster.
Wilco - A Ghost is Born, makes me want to slow down.
Both equal a good time!

Jackman, agree about The Shins!
