Title: New member from U. City
Post by: RaceTripper on 25 Feb 2012, 04:40 am
Greetings.

I am a new member and vinylphile from University City. I have been into two-channel music listening for the past 40 years or so. Last year I revamped my entire system, brought out my vinyl from 10 years storage, and am expanding the collection once again. I listen almost entirely to acoustic jazz and classical. I have about 2500 LPs (1/3 jazz, 2/3 classical). I have a degree in Music from Webster University and did some graduate studies in musicology at Washington University, but work in the area as a software engineer.

My system is:
Rega RP3/TTPSU with Groovetracer Reference Subplatter and Counterweight
Dynavector 20x2H cartridge
Simaudio Moon 110LP phono preamp with Welborne Labs PSU
Naim Audio UnitiQute (preamp and digital streamer)
Naim Audio NAP250.2 power amp
Transparent Audio interconnects
Naim Audio NACA5 speaker cable
REL Serie T-7 sub
Dynaudio Contour S1.4 speakers with Stand4

I plan to add a Naim Audio NAC202 preamp with Hicap2 and Napsc PSUs as soon as I can find good ones used at a decent price.

Sorry for the delay in approving your first post.  :duh:

Welcome to AudioCircle, and G.A.S.!!!  :thumb:

I think you'll fit in very well with our humble little group here. Sounds like your past twelve months have been pretty interesting, to say the least. There are quite a few vinyl guys here to chat with as well.

I guess I'm not up on all the recent audiophile jargon (I'm really more oriented towards the music collecting & listening end of it), but what is "SET"?

I appreciate all the welcome. Hopefully, there will be a place for me to make a contribution.

How do I set my account to receive notification of replies to threads I subscribe or post on?

So, what's the story with the moniker?

SET...OK, got it. I've always been sort of a Naim Audio fan, going back to the 80s when their little 18 WPC Nait integrated put my 160 WPC McIntosh separates system to shame. Speaking of tube amps I recently home auditioned an Octave V40SE integrated amp with the Black Box and KT88 tubes. It sounded awesome, but I think I'll get the same or better SQ when I add a proper Naim preamp to my existing Naim system. I've been watching Audiogon (what mess!) for a used Naim NAC202 to buy.

The moniker...you mean "RaceTripper"? My wife and I are race fans and do several road trips a year to see ALMS and F1 races. We normally go to the 12 Hours of Sebring, Petit Le Mans, and one other race. Today we drove down to Potosi for the Rally America 100 Acre Wood Rally. I have also tracked my cars at Gateway International Raceway over in Madison. So fast cars are my other passion...wife and I both drive 2011 Subaru STIs (yes, we have two of them). I had a MINI JCW before that, and a BMW M3 before the MINI.

Welcome Racetripper!!!  Nice cars, I am a young and poor driving enthusiast, I was really close on pulling the trigger on an STI before I got my Audi A4, wish I would have picked one up.

I just got into Vinyl, so much fun trying to find stuff and it is a much cheaper hobby than collecting gear.  Plus with Vintage Vinyl right down the road, what a city to do it in.  Look ofrward to running into you soon.

Vinyl is great stuff. I have started streaming CD and higher res digital, and even 24/96 audio isn't quite as satisfying as good vinyl. Get into a good cleaning regimen. It makes a difference to have clean vinyl. I'm using an Okki Nokki RCM and AudioIntelligent Vinyl Solutions. It's not cheap, but well worth it when you have a lot of valuable vinyl.

Whenever I go to Fitz's in the loop, my dinner bill is $140, $40 for food and drink and $100 for that sidetrip across the street to VV.

Welcome aboard indeed.  Good to hear of other Subaru owners in the fold, especially a husband & wife both enjoying the STi.

I often frequent stlsubaru.com as well.  The members usually cover 100 Acre Wood with lots of photos & sometimes video.

RaceTripper. I may have met you at the Gateway track.  My son and I used to do the photography for the Porsche, BMW, and other clubs who'd rent the track for performance driving schools, and my son served as a course marshal at the 100-Acre Wood a few times.

"Track Dan" was the weekend on-track manager who watched over everybody.  Great guy!  I certainly hope that when/if the track comes to life again, "Track Dan" is there.

Glad to have another vinyl-spinner on board!   :thumb:

Sure, I know you guys.  :D I still have pictures around you took of me tracking my Carbon Black E46 M3 and my Chili Red/White MINI JCW with the BMW and Porsche clubs.

I've done a bit of race photography myself. I have some of my galleries at http://racetripper.smugmug.com. Unfortunately, I have had the time to cull and post several races I've done since then. For a while I was working on getting IMSA media credentials for ALMS races & even volunteered to work the hot pits at petit Le Mans, but I decided I didn't really have the time for it all.

I REMEMBER that E46!  Small world! :thumb:

My son has moved to Dallas for a new job, and I'm getting too old to schlep all those cameras around for a weekend, but "Track Dan" helped us "borrow" the oval to test an early version (below) of a human-powered vehicle.  They essentially said "Don't break anything, and lock it when you leave!"

Post by: Bob in St. Louis on 26 Feb 2012, 08:28 pm
There's an official classified section on AudioCircle, complete with individual sub categories for amp, sources, speakers, ect..ect...
If an item is something you don't want to ship for whatever reason, you can put the thread right here in the GAS area.
But for maximum exposure, the main classified section is seen by more eyes: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?board=109.0

Good luck with the sale.  :D

Hey Bob,

We should do a GAS Flea Market thread (sticky) like the Rave used to. It's a great place to list things for local sale, stuff members may not want to ship or only offer to other local guys. I used to watch theirs all the time. Mark and I bought a couple of Consonance stands (one TT, one CD) from them a while back.

If we do that, we'll have a centralized thread where GASsers can hawk their wares, audio and otherwise.  :thumb: Once an item listed gets sold, the poster just goes back to that post and mark it sold.

Here's a link to the old NYAR Garage Sale (http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=60369.0)

I sold one of my amps, so I'm happy for that.
I'm looking for a used Naim NAC202 preamp and Hicap2 power supply. Before Audiogon went to hell they came up every couple weeks or so. Now it seems to be a dry spell. Just gotta be patient I guess and wait for one at the right price.
Title: Re: New member from U. City
Post by: RaceTripper on 3 Mar 2012, 01:56 am
It's been a good week. First I sold one of my amps (that sounded quite good, BTW).

Yesterday, I tracked down some used Naim Audio equipment I had been searching for. It's on the way to me from California now. I'll be getting...

1. Naim Audio NAC202 pre-amplifier
2. Naim Audio FlatCap XS power supply
3. Naim Audio NAPSC power supply

If you aren't familiar with Naim, they are very much into upgrading equipment via high capacity power supplies that operate far below their upper threshold, and they keep them out of the boxes where the signal path is most sensitive to noise issues.

The NAC202 has no AC power whatsoever, and requires an external source of DC power for operation. My power amp, a Naim NAP 250-2 does not supply that power for preamps (Naim's NAP200 and lower in the range do, the NAP250 and up do not). The NAC202 (as do all Naim preamps) needs a separate power supply to operate. That is what the FlatCap XS is for. It is a twin rail 24V power supply. The NAPSC adds a second level upgrade. It powers all the digital switching circuitry and lamps in the NAC202 so the FlatCap won't have to. What all this means is the noise floor gets lowered and provides a more open presentation, with better detail and more refined soundstage. IOW: it lets more of the music come through without being veiled by electronic noise.

I should have this all sometime next week. Can't wait to hear my vinyl with the new setup.  :D

P.S. what the hell is wrong with the editing interface here. It keeps consuming paragraph breaks.

If the symptom you're having is the one I think you're having, some versions of IE have issues displaying some websites.

See if this helps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

Is that the problem you're having?

The version of IE I'm using, has a little green icon just to the right of the address bar. If you hover your mouse over it, it should say "Compatibility mode" and give a brief description of what that button does.

Hope I said that clear.

I like MAC for laptops but unfortunately I hate laptops.  Unfortunately I have upgraditis with computer as well as audio.  So I buy PC so my wife doesn't leave me and to keep me out of the poor house.  Since I build the systems myself thus picking great components, and install good Virus/ spyware protection I can usually get 5-7 years out of a PC for about 1/4 the cost of a comparable MAC.  Gets me past the break even just barely assuming the PC will be closer to cutting edge for longer and the MAC will probably last 10+ years.  So I figure 2 $800 cutting edge PCs in 10 years  vs. one $3000 MAC.  To each their own.

Dynavector 20x2H cartridge
Simaudio Moon 110LP phono preamp with Welborne Labs PSU
Naim Audio NAP250.2 power amp
Transparent Audio interconnects
Naim Audio NACA5 speaker cable

Dynaudio Contour S1.4 speakers with Stand4

Gone: Naim Audio UnitiQute (preamp and digital streamer)

 Naim Audio NAC202 preamp
 Naim Audio HiCap PSU

RT,

At some point you might try a set of Transparent speaker cables to match the Transparent IC.  I borrowed the 8' set of Catastrophe's (listed on the GAS trading post thread currently) & bought a longer pair soon thereafter.  Good stuff.  When budget allows i'll try their IC's for sure.

I have a pair of Transparent MusicWave speaker cables. They make my Naim system sound worse. The Naim power amps -- especially those in the classic series, NAP200 and above -- are tuned for their own NACA5 speaker cables in lengths of 3.5-10M with 5-7M being optimal. I am using the optimal 6M lengths.

When I had a Naim UnitiQute the Transparent sounded better, but once I added Naim power amp into the mix, it went the other way.
