They're grey market - not from the authorized US distributor.

That means you have no warranty, but I've read that Comet will replace a defective cart.  It happens, and in one case somebody got a very old sample that looked like it was previously returned.  If Comet stands behind the sale, you wouldn't have much to worry about.  Usually a cart either works or not.  If it's a model worth re-tipping or repairing, you don't need the mfg for that.  Trade in might be a problem.

Well you are correct, but if it has an opened box that is the first indication it may be used.
I have never read of anything you state as complaints.

I have a Denon DL301 MKII on the way.
We'll see.

I have purchased a DL103R in the past and no problems all sealed new.
John Ellison on Audio Asylum has purchased 2  DLS1 with no problems.

I think it was on Karma, someone got a defective cart with an old serial number.
Comet replaced it.

Ordered a Denon DL-S1 last week.  I checked order status yesterday. I was happy to see a Fedex tracking #.  Delivery will be this Friday!  When I purchased the Denon, the Comet webpage did show the item in stock.  I'll post my impressions of the DL-S1 once broken in.  Currently using a Ortofon Jubilee.

I have a Cinemag 1131 that should work good with the Denon.  With my Ortofon the 1131 sounds great but has a bit too much gain.  Should be a great match with the Denon.

Interesting , they are telling me after april 1st for the DL110 .......

I waited to order the Denon DL-S1 until it showed in stock.  I just checked the Comet site & the S1 & DL-304 are the only models in stock at this time.  I can't comment on wait times for items not in stock.  The DL-304 is a nice cartridge but a bit more expensive than the DL-110 & 301MK11.  Good luck.

$350 in savings.... I understand taking the risk.  I was looking at a Denon 102 (mono) there.  I can't retip mine for what a new one would cost at Comet.  I'll look forward to your report.

The cheapest I could find on the DL301 II was $279. Most everyone else was $329, even Juki was higher than $279.
I paid $215 shipped.
That's $114 savings on the higher price. I'll take it.
I ordered a DL103R from Comet a few years ago also had no problem.

Psssst,
LP Gear has the AT OC9 MK II for a very good price,$294.
I have one of those coming too.

I've bought a 110 and a 102 there in the past and got quick service with no problems. Just bought a 103R there two weeks ago and it arrived within a week and a half - the longest I've waited with them - and it's great. If they list the cartridge as in stock, which is what I've always made sure of, I'd say go for it.

You don't have to worry about LpGear.  They may be bad with email response and don't want phone calls, but once an order is placed you'll get an immediate conformation and a tracking number within a day (usually - weekends excepted).  I must have bought a dozen items from them and it's always arrived -no problem. My advise would be to focus on what you think you really want, instead of a great deal. BTW, they're an  authorized AT dealer.

Comet might be problematic for regular stuff, but I think they found a nice flow with their grey Denons. Hundreds of posts on various forums seem to confirm, you'll either get your item or a refund if they're out of stock. For a long while they couldn't get stock and a lot of people were nervous, but it seems like everyone eventually got their item or refund.  That said, anytime you order from an unauthorized dealer, you're at their mercy. It's not like they can lose their franchise if.....

From LP Gear, ordered the OC9 MKII on 3-20 confirmed shipped on 3-21.
I wouldn't worry about LP Gear, they have been around a while and is a reputable Audio Dealer.
Where Comet sells EVERYTHING, including the kitchen sink.

At Comet you have to keep looking at the inventory "in stock" then order.
The DLS1 and the DL304 is in stock now.

I have to say my experience with Comet was very good.  Great price, excellent product & fast shipping.

Woke up early this morning, had a cup of Joe, & got to work.  Install went smooth & the DL-S1 was ready for some tunes.  Sounds very good out of the box.  With some fine tuning & burn in I'm sure I will be more than happy with it's sound.

The Denon 110 is usually out of stock so best to get your name on the list and order it. Mine took 5+ weeks but I knew before
ordering it could be up to 6 weeks. I called them a couple of times to check on the shipment and they seemed very forthright
on when the shipment would be in. Took an extra 5 days but I assume they had quite an accumulation of orders to ship. Most
of us have other cartridges to play so the time is not life or death except for the anticipation and excitement of a new unit...

How do they get these carts from Denon to begin with if they're unauthorized?  And if they're being sold at dealer cost they must be getting them even cheaper than distributors from Denon in order to make a profit.  Are they B stock?  Stolen?  What gives?

Well, probably not much cheaper than distributors, but distributor have overhead/profit and their selling price to dealers is normally 50 to 60% of retail, so there's some room there.  A company like Comet would usually get them from a dealer in Japan or wherever where dealer cost is lower.  Comet probably pays cash and the Oriental dealer blows them out for a quick profit, then Comet does the same.  I don't think they're B stock.  All reports indicate they're the real deal.   It's also unlikely they're stolen.  They would have been tracked down.  Too many carts for that.

For awhile there Comet couldn't get stock and people waited for months or got a refund.  The supply is still somewhat erratic, but so far Comet is giving much better service on these items than would be indicated on those reviews posted above.  I guess they found a nice line and want to keep it going.

My first DL-110 from Comet took 42 days but it was in a sealed factory package and played fine after breaking in and loading it down.  I ordered a second one last week just to have on hand. I expect this one to take just as long to arrive, but it doesn't matter.  Moral is don't order Denon cartridges from Comet if you are in a hurry.

Tilted how?   The 110 has an alum cantilever that's flattened on the diamond end and is roughly parallel to the record, just near the tip.   Is this what you're talking about?

Well it Took me 6 weeks to get my dl110, it arrived friday , you buys , you waits .. :duh:

When i had it first installed it was way too sweet , cd bad sweet , audio diabetes .....

Spent sometime with the setup yesterday and today , added mass, changed the alignment, azimuth and Lowered the VTA and it Knocked the CD sound right out , much better balance , but of course lost a little details in the mix, less air and space around instruments , the VTA looks good , so i will check more after running the test records, so far its much better to live with this way, it was diabetic sweet before...

A few more hrs run in time and more adjustment before full evaluation, very happy so far , table is an ES-1 , a few more upgrades and tweaks before comparing it to the VPI rig ....

Imo Its gonna be close ....  :icon_lol:

Cantiliver was straight , but diamond tip was a bit tilted, i was able to adjust the azimuth and it seems OK now, I have a new one from Needle doctor , i will compare, to see if it is the same way, I'm suspicious Comet maybe selling seconds, or i just got one a bit out of spec...

Anyway ...

The balance is very impressive now, highs are fully extended and not bright, bass, has slam, when playing Carmina Burana opening track , it was all wow, it does have it all and in another few hrs play time i will re check VTF and VTA.

So far I have no reason to return and may other another as a spare ...

I ordered a DL-110 around the first of July.  Was still at a decent price.  Checked their website repeatedly, for order status.  Finally, in October, they canceled my order and refunded my money.  The invoice page said that they were not going to carry Denon anymore.

I found 1 at the old price on Amazon, the day after the cancellation.  Needless to say, I bought it.

Don't know if I'd call it bad news.  I have a mono Denon 102 that was from them with a twisted cantilever.  I wrapped the cantilever in rubber and literally took a small pair of pliers and torqued it until the diamond was in line with the record.  I'd not buy from them.
