Thanks Norman.  Nice way to compare one's DSD-capable DAC at DSD and 24/192 since analog music was converted to both directly (at least that's how I read it).

Edit:  Yes, Mr Sommer confirmed to me in an email that there was no mastering at all, just clean analog transfers to either PCM or DSD.  The redbook, of course, is a downsampled PCM version.

I am unable to download the PCM versions.     Can someone please tell me how they were able to do this?

This is one sweet sounding track! The 24/192 is louder than the DSD though...cant say which is better as its too late here.

Here are a few more free DSD and 24 bit very hirez songs.  Kent Poon's Audiophile Jazz Prologue series has been mentioned before here on the Circle, but this time he offers both DSD and 24/384k samples (as well as 24/192, etc).  The only rub is you'll need to register; takes 2 minutes.

http://designwsound.com/dwsblog/recordings/audiophile-jazz-prologue-3-free-hi-res-samples/

I'm gonna make this topic a sticky, and add to it whenever I (or Circle goers) see additional free DSD song samples.

Don't forget to register with Cookie Marenco's BlueCoast label for a treasure trove of monthly free DSD downloads (including 26 free DSD songs from CAS2011, CAS2012 and an alternate version of Slow Day, currently in her download section).

The Nordic label 2L has taken their wonderful DXD-based surround files and converted them to DSD (for their SACD releases, mainly).  There are now 10 free tracks of multichannel DFF on their test bench website.  Morten claims they did it in response to the Oppo announcement...so it's working.  :)

http://www.2l.no/hires/

Also worth noting is that they have also added (in the past month) a column for their 2 channel DSD128 samples too!!  Nine of them!!

What is the secret to unzipping the 2L DXD files? If I double click the zip, it creates another zip.

I'm sure I'm being thick here.  :duh:

Thanks.  Good compilation through Dec 2012.  Missing newer sites like Opus 3 (dsdfile), etc.

I follow John Dario on YouTube, and his webpage etc.

He’s arranged a free download that maybe of interest here. Ambient sounds.

Yuri Korzunov has a current list of free DSD sites
https://samplerateconverter.com/educational/dsd-music#dsd-music-download (https://samplerateconverter.com/educational/dsd-music#dsd-music-download)

2L has expanded their selection of free downloads.
http://www.2l.no/hires/index.html (http://www.2l.no/hires/index.html)

"The music captured by 2L features Norwegian composers and performers and an international repertoire reflected in the Nordic atmosphere. The surround sound recordings of Lindberg Lyd not only transform the entire listening experience, but also - more radically - these innovative recordings overturn some very basic concepts regarding how music is played and even composed. 2L emphasize surround sound with Pure Audio Blu-ray and HiRes file distribution, and have garnered no less than 23 American GRAMMY nominations since 2006. Sixteen of these in categories Best Engineered Album, Best Surround Sound Album and Producer of the Year

"2L record in spacious acoustic venues: large concert halls, churches and cathedrals. This is actually where we can make the most intimate recordings. The qualities we seek in large rooms are not necessarily a big reverb, but openness due to the absence of close reflecting walls. Making an ambient and beautiful recording is the way of least resistance. Searching the fine edge between direct contact and openness - that’s the real challenge! A really good recording should be able to bodily move the listener. This core quality of audio production is made by choosing the right venue for the repertoire, and by balancing the image in the placement of microphones and musicians relative to each other in that venue."

11 different formats are available. "From the album" has links to all the album covers and info. No registration required. Malwarebytes Premium will question your choice to download from a foreign location but the files are clean and safe.

I downloaded 17 tracks and there isn't a clunker in the bunch. I titled and tagged all the tracks to make a 2L DSD Compilation album that I listen to using JRiver.

The JRiver default setting is to convert DSD to PCM so all DSD files will play on any DAC although the files will have to be downsampled to what your DAC can play, my old DAC was 24/96. If your new DAC will play DSD, check DSD in JRiver's Bitstream option. PCM and DSD are now pass-through to the DAC without additional processing.

My HoloAudio May KTE can play DSD files natively without the PCM conversion. The May has two DACs inside: a R2R for NOS PCM and a DSD Resistor Ladder that plays up to DSD1024 natively. This is not the DSD converted to PCM before digital-analog converter like the Rockna or Denefrips, but directly by the discrete components of the DSD digital to analog converter.

I have JRiver configured to load one song at a time into memory, they all play without stuttering but these are big files and will test your music server speed, the compilation album is 7.23 GB.

Half the files are .dff, which I converted to .dsf, which support tags. I converted the .dff files using the free hfx dff to dsf converter:  https://hfx.at/shop/en/services/25-dff-to-dsf-converter.html (https://hfx.at/shop/en/services/25-dff-to-dsf-converter.html)
