Mafia Inc caught me by surprise. A Canadian Mafia movie? Was there ever a Canadian mafia? It sounds like an oxymoron, Canadian's are always nice.

As it turns out not all Canadians are nice. Mafia Inc is gangster movie based on a nonfiction book of the same name by André Cédilot and André Noël that delved into Montreal’s organized crime world and reveals how the father and son Nicolo and Vito Rizzuto clan built their Canadian empire through force and corruption, alliances and compromises, and turned it into one of the most powerful criminal organizations in North America.

Mafia Inc is an old school gangster film "complete with all the tropes we want and expect from the genre: murders in meatpacking warehouses; bloody shootouts that destroy cars and shops; a wedding where plots are made while everyone else is dancing. And most essential of all, the furnishings are all lavishly tasteless: it’s full of ornate and overstuffed sofas where grown men curl up to weep over their slain children. The constant shifting between Italian, English and Québécois-accented French adds an extra texture, and the performances are as sharp as the suits."1

The actors and director are Italian and Canadian and unknown to most American audiences, universally all are perfectly cast. Directing is taught, forceful and confident, the film grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go for 2-1/4 hours. The actors look and act like seasoned Sicilian mobsters, beefy mean matter-of-fact killers, the wives are slim, stylishly dressed and just as calculating and dangerous.

In the Sicilian Mafia, family comes first, then business - don't threaten either.
