Like the title says'' What are five (5) of your best sounding CD's in the rock or alternative rock genre?"....you know the ones...they just have everything sounding 'right'.
List individual tracks if necessary,as there are not too many CD's IMHO that sound 'good' the whole way through, but if there are, post 'em,so also provide catalogue numbers of CD's if you prefer. Thanks,Huck :icon_lol:

That's a tough one because I doctored most of the cd's that I like. Plus my really good recordings are either dvd or blue-ray. Streaming sounds better than I recall the same cd's sounding.

Off the top of my head that I can recall.
1. John Melloncamp Greatest Hits

2. Moontan- Golden Earring
3. Unleashed in the East- Judas Priest remastered version
4. Do You Feel Like We Do- Peter Fampton- Comes Alive remastered

Steely Dan - Everything Must Go (2003), available on CD ($5), 45 rpm vinyl, SACD, DVD-Audio (24bit-96khz)

The base tracks were recorded live to analog tape, all the band members together in a small studio at Sear Sound (the old Hit Factory) in New York.
"We had a six-guy band with two guitar players [Jon Herington and Hugh McCracken], two keyboard players [Fagen and Ted Baker], and bass and drums. Everybody felt the same way and was able to get on the same wavelength and really define the rhythm and come up with cool parts."

"The desk was an old 36-input Neve 8036, and we used Studer A827 24-tracks with Dolby SR...
"So after recording the basic tracks on analogue we transferred them to a 16-bit Sony 3348, used this for overdubs, and when it was time to mix we used the original analogue 24-track and locked it up with the overdubs on 3348. While we did overdubs we also did some editing on computer. There are a few manipulations that are much easier to do on a workstation."

It would be more informative if you also put down what your CD player and or system is to give a more complete feel for the overall sound.

I'll add:   Pink Floyd---Wish You Were Here   SACD
              Steely Dan---Two Against Nature
Little Feat---Waiting For Columbus                     Live Album
              Deep Purple---Live in Japan
              Fink---Perfect Darkness
Fink---Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet                    Live Album
              Roger Waters--Amused to Death

The live Fink Album is the absolute best sounding rock or alternative CD/SACD in my collection.

Listen on a Modwright Sony 5400 Signature Truth tricked out with many tweaks.  If no one else cares, that's life I guess.

FireGuy

I'll submit one CD.

Tiamat's "A Deeper Kind of Slumber"

It's hard to mention just three, but I'll settle on seven for now, two of which are more in the blues genre. I might say I tend to favor musical content over audiophile sound quality, but either way, none of these should disappoint.
Already mentioned and in total agreement: Fink "Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet" and Little Feat "Waiting For Columbus".
Chris Whitley:  "On Air" and "Hotel Vast Horizon"
The Beautiful Girls:  "Learn Yourself" and  "We're Already Gone"
Xavier Rudd:  "Good Spirit"
More bluesy stuff v
Big Joe Maher: "Mojo"
Junior Wells:  "Live At Theresa's 1975"
