Strange sky here in San Francisco Bay Area
« on: 9 Sep 2020, 05:03 pm »
I've never seen anything like this before! It's like night here, yet it's 10:00 am. Lights on in the house. My iPhone makes the sky appear brighter than it actually is.
Combination of heavy fog and dense smoke makes for a surreal atmosphere. The air quality is not too bad, since the smoke is pretty high. Backyard pic.

Yep, it’s now 1pm and no change.  I texted my wife, “Are we on Mars?”  There’s also a shower of ashes where I am..

That's eerie as hell. Stay safe out there.

In Corvallis, Oregon:

Visibility is perhaps 250 feet??

Air quality as of 1:00pm is PM2.5 566. The air inside our home was getting pretty smoky, so I made my own HEPA filter air purifier. Image coming in a couple minutes.

It might look clunky, but it pushes a helluva lot of clean air.  :thumb:

AQI of 566...yowza that is high! Extremely hazardous.

Here in SF, the AQI is in the high 70's. Ash has been falling for a while now and the cars parked on street look like they were at Burning Man.

The wind must have changed direction. Here is a repeat of my first photo. You can now see the houses on the hill.

Wow! That looks like a bad West Texas sandstorm, and you just go inside and hide from those.  You guys stay safe.  Are the fires near any of you?

We had the same thing here in the Northern California Sierra foothills.  Our pathway lights triggered at about 3:30 yesterday, and they turn on by (lack of) light intensity.  It nearly was dark then!

No pictures -- sorry!

I'm just north of Eugene and 16 miles west of the current evacuation line.  Fortunately there is 10 miles of bare dirt fields out my back door.

This is 8 a.m Tuesday.

Well dragging out the speaker boxes.  I will be taking the stereo in the truck.  I told the wife to get me a change of clothes :thumb:

The Level 1 Get Ready to evacuate line is now 5 miles seat of the house.

I will proceed with caution.  The main reason for this line modification is residences up the west side of the hills.

Patio cushions and like flammable items will be removed from the exterior.

I did get the chance to to see more then 2 blocks today.  10% of the state has been displaced as of yesterday evening. The Portland area and it surrounding communities are looking to take the brunt of the fire growth it seems like.

I think the Oregon Wine will take a hit this year and my vegetable garden is tasting like fireplace left overs.

Wow.  I'm reading that Portland is actually threatened.

I feel for you guys.  I've been there, loading a trailer, cutting 14" cedars in the back yard, and hauling them to the edge of the property, finally having to leave. and calling the next morning to see if the answering machine picks up.  It's a very surreal situation.
Hope you catch a break with the wind directions.

Geez, Alan! Do you really think the fire will get that close to you?

 :o

If you do evacuate, gimme a call.

Michael

P.S. There is zero wind in Corvallis right now. The smoke is heavy. PM2.5 is 265. Our HEPA air purifiers are keeping our indoor air clean.
