Title: XLS - Macro
Post by: Speaker Challenged on 2 Jul 2021, 04:24 am
Any chance Danny and the guys could come up with an 8 inch woofer XLS Encore? Same fast bass response but a little more bass for those of us that can't fit a Subwoofer in the house (WAF). :)

C'mon Danny take pity on us. :)

There's your challenge for the next 6 months on top of all the testing and orders you have in front of you.   :thumb:

You have loss leaders with the Mini's and Bravo's which I think are fantastic value options but a stand mount with more beef would be fantastic. CSS Criton killer.

I mean.. The 8-inch servo subs will be making a comeback..  :P
But time will tell Danny has planned beyond that.

Would be interesting to see how an 8" version of the X-SLS would perform..

What else do you need besides 8 inch servo drivers? Do they have to be run in pairs like the 12s?

Hobbs thanks for giving us something to look forward too. An 8 inch XLS would be awesome.

Exciting stuff! Do you have and approximate price or time scale yet?

Sadly, I dont know more than that yet.

But for smaller rooms, the 8" subs are fantastic option.

Not sure about any plans for an actual 8" X-LS style driver, but I have seen a this 8" Peerless by Tymphany driver on PE that might be suitable.

Its definitely an interesting idea tho!

ohh.. add an 8" sub into the same cabinet as the NX Studios for a 3-way version.

(ie expand the current cabinet)

Danny designed something a few years ago that accomplishes what this thread is about. He called them the Best Speaker Stands Ever.
Here is a link to the discussion thread. https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=129161.0   Once the 8" servo drivers are available these stands can be built again. I've built a pair and was never able to achieve solid output down to 20Hz. However, I consistently got solid output down into the upper 20s in a number of rooms, including at the Lone Star Audio Fest.

Unfortunately, all of Danny's pictures in the thread have disappeared. Here are a couple I saved from the original thread:

And here are some of a pair I built to go with X-CS Encores being used as mains and are the ones I had at LSAF:

These stands will turn any monitor into a "Macro". Once the drivers are available, I'll be building a pair to go with my NX-Studios. Now that's going to be a box speaker to contend with.

I have those exact stands in the first couple pictures. Used them with my X-LS and will be used with my NX Studios once they're finished.
I absolutely love them.

In a small to medium room they have no trouble playing into the low 20s & high teens. In larger rooms, they'll hit into the mid-low 30s, depending on the room.

Pardon the mess, I'm still in the "unpacking phase" in my apartment. But here's my current set up while Im wait to work on my other projects. :P

Plus I need to start buying furniture... And a million other small things..

The speakers I'm using are a pair of Samson Resolv RXA5 active monitors sitting on top of the sub towers.. (For a $200 purchase several years ago, they're not terrible, esp set up like this. They image a lot better than I expected.)

But in this room, the sub towers hit down into the mid-low 20s pretty easily.
Really can't wait to have them playing with my NX Studios tho!  :thumb:

Shouldn't one of the existing multi-woofer tower models server the same purpose?

Sure, but everyone has different levels of space constraints, so having sub stands like these helps minimize the use of floor space that regular H-Frame subs require.

These are perfect for those with smaller rooms.

And/or where they can't be pulled at least 3ft. from the wall like the H-Frames need.

Exactly Mike.

I only have room for bookshelves at the moment. I have some fantastic Orpheus Aurora 2 floor standers in storage. I have 7 inches from the back of the encores to the wall and no room for a sub. The room is small and shared with my family/office. If I could upgrade the woofer to the 8 inch like Hobbs showed above in a slightly deeper sealed or front firing or down firing cabinet that would be so helpful in a tight space.
As I am looking to upgrade my encores later to a better crossover it would be great timing if I upgrade the woofers too.

Something like these Aussie wood foxes but not so tall. http://www.adelaidespeakers.com/woodfox-bookshelf.html

C'mon Danny chip in here.  ;)

Definitely looks like what is needed for the XLS Encore Macro and did I mention 8ohms 90db sensitivity would be great too? Might have forgotten that bit but I'd take 87db if it gets it across the line as the R8 has no issue with the current encores  :thumb:  8)

Lmao. Ive also got Tito's, Grey Goose, Pinnacle boxes too...
Nahhh, I dont like vodka tbh, my pain needs something with a little more refinement, like say, a finely aged Scotch or bourbon... 8)

My previous job was running a grocer-chain liquor store, so most of my moving boxes were ones I was able to save after putting away deliveries. Very handy!

It's okay to be jealous. Tho we honestly still kinda need someone local to help out at the end of the week, when the other guys are back in Denton working on power cables and flatpacks..

I managed to get maybe 12 orders out this weekend.
Hopefully, we can get another 20 at least partially ready, esp those that are waiting on Sonicaps. (Namely the Studios)

I hear you there Hobbs I prefer a single malt to vodka hands down.

If I was local I'd be there with bells on.

Keep up the great work pushing those orders out the door. Those orders mean alot to the folks who just plain love the hobby or who don't know what their in for. ;)

The Peerless SLS 830667 is a very nice 8" woofer, needing less than a 1 cubic foot sealed enclosure.  It is the basis for the bucket sub--
https://www.transcendentsound.com/bucket-sub.html
I built the bucket sub, with a few modifications, to provide bass support for my AV-1s. They are an excellent match.  Bass is deep, very tight and tuneful, with surprising impact using just one driver in my 10' x 14' basement shop.  I think 2 of these per side would provide all the bass needed for the 8" version of the "party speaker" or to pair with the NX Studio and other speakers when OB is not practical.

Are drawings, dimensions, flat packs around for “The Best Speaker Stand” ?

That is precisely what I need to complement my NX Studios AND my modest stereo room.

This is exactly what I am looking for. So we will be waiting for these.
Its such a good idea for me and my space. I was going to use 4 parts express 1cu ft blank front box with 8" woofers and stack 2 of them per stand.
But I like this design a lot. It will be awhile before I would need them. I currently am waiting on my mini kit and once that is done then I want to build a set set of XLS Encore's.

Hey Hobbs if I got one of these 8 inch drivers and sent it to you do you think you guys could test it for a cross over and new cabinet design? Down the road you could offer it as an upgrade crossover like the Klipsch etc etc.

Possibly? But that's something youll have to ask Danny about.
We definitely do custom crossovers for people who send in custom built speakers. Including industry guys now and then.
I think weve done two in the last week? A 6' tall T-line sort of speaker and a rather interesting bookshelf.

But I know Danny prefers to have a fully assembled box sent rather than just drivers.

Thanks Hobbs. Yeah I know he prefers an assembled speaker but it is expensive to send from OZ where as a driver isn't  that bad and I was thinking he may have a few Encores lying around he could try it in.
Thanks anyway.

I don't want to add to the flood of emails so can you point him to this thread. Cheers Hobbs.

Unfortunately Danny has said no go for an 8 inch version. :( The driver I was looking to get is not suitable either for the bookshelf size box or in efficiency It would make it 83db etc.

So looks like the XLS - Macro is a dead duck.
