Title: NFL 2020-2021
Post by: SteveFord on 13 Sep 2020, 09:44 pm
Ladies and gentlemen,
This is IT, the year of the G-Men!

Piped crowd noise, cardboard cut outs in the stands, it doesn't get any better than this!

This is going to be one really strange season.

Still some great games tho! Happy to see the NFL back, hopefully COVID doesn’t blow up again

we had better reset our benchmarks for what is good, acceptable, not...

covid will be fierce this winter

these games, and nba games, are a gift - we better appreciate them

i guarantee more than a few nfl games will be postponed to cancelled due to covid before the regular season concludes

not happy or hoping to see that happen, just think it is coming

so enjoy it

IF -and this is a HUGE if - the NFL players AND their families can stay highly disciplined throughout the season in limiting their outside contacts and wear masks and frequently wash their hands, they could make it through the season. Unfortunately, a fair percentage of Americans have shown that they can't do it so I was thinking that the season would be cancelled after 4-6 weeks but it looks good this past week so now I give it 6-8 weeks before big names start missing games and a couple more weeks before it's shut down.

I hope I'm wrong.

This is the age of the internet. Don't just accuse. Find out. Which teams?  Where did you hear this? What were their sources, if any? Maybe they're just spreading unfounded rumors. Don't be part of the problem.

it's 2016 all over again, the NFL lost piles of money from people boycotting games because of the virtue signalling then and now they have big screens celebrating the terrorist organization that is burning and looting cities.

I apologise.

no problem, FWIW I was told that Houston and Phila (both visitor) teams did stay in their respective locker rooms while the National Anthem was played and to that I'm glad they both lost !!

I was just wondering if it was some sort of league mandate ??

The league has allowed each team, i.e. the players  decide what they want to do, individually and collectively.

I think that it sure would be nice if we could just stick with talking about the game itself.

Based on what little I saw....

Cam may not last the whole season running so much. The Ravens and KC will meet in the AFC championship, Aaron Rogers is pissed at his club.... for now, Buffalo looks strong and the NFC east might not be that good... which gives me some hope for my Washington FC.

Aside from the cardboard cut outs in the stands the part that I find the funniest is the Washington No-Names.
You think they could have come up with something by now but nope.

These are big corporations. First you have to choose a name that you want to keep for a lifetime with  public feedback, test groups needed, then print all the literature, decals, stationary, devise marketing, logos, mascots, copyrights, legal documents, etc. It took the Titans about 18 months to change from the Tennessee Oilers to the Titans.

You're not missing much.

Incidentally, for those who are not Detroit Lions fans, you have to understand that it’s not the start of the season in the fall that inspires hope here in Detroit,  it’s the start of the draft in the spring that inspires hope...

....unless is was Matt Millen doing the draft day selections.   In that case, we just spent time commiserating with Cleveland fans.

I knew this was a 3-4 win team. I'm done wasting my time. All the Fords care about is selling $8 hotdogs and F150s, no interest in winning football games.

I hope QuinnTricia is gone after the season. They keep on trying being in schemes that worked 10 years ago...lol

You are right, the draft is the Superbowl for Lions fans.

The Steelers finally fall to the seemingly endless number of trap games they faced this year.  They pulled out to a good lead then didn't adapt to Washington changing their coverage.  It was as if Ben couldn't throw it deep.  Of course there is no running game in Pittsburgh, 51 pass plays.  And Ben, they've caught onto your no back surprise offense, is not a surprise anymore.  Can they get a fast fix for the offense in the era of Covid?

Surprising that no one's mentioning Hurts replacing the Eagle's second overall pick in the draft Wentz.  I know the NFC East is a horrible division with the division winner very likely being under .500, but I thought it was a big deal.  Give a team a running game and all of a sudden they start winning games.  Of course we'll see what happens in the next few games, but they could make a bid to get back in the one and done bowl.  Now if only somebody could show the Steelers what a running game looks like....

Josh Allen in is first two years tossed zero 300 yard games.  2020 he has seven.  Serious candidate for MVP.

Amen to that and as a Bflo native that goes back to day 1 with the Bills and the 7 other members of the 'Foolish 8 Club' I can only hope there will be more on the horizon !

His maturity is quite evident combined with one the best and most balanced group of receivers in the game today. That combined with an Offensive coordinator in tune to manage it and he's from my hometown !

Tasker's vid is spot on and visceral.  Especially for the Mafia.  Saw it on FB last night.  BTW my younger son taught Steve T.'s son in high school.  I've met him and talked with him on a few occasions.  Very polite and accommodating.    Good analogy with Pete Rose.  Fearless on the field and belongs in the HOF for his position hands down.

And to Letitroll98:  Your statement;  "Just remember, nobody in Pittsburgh celebrates division wins, only Superbowl victories" is well received.  One step at a time I suppose.  Been a while since the Bills have been this good.

I'm a fan of the game so I can appreciate how far the Bills have come.  And I like watching Mahomes and KC as well, a favorite to repeat.  We all have our team, or teams, that will always be primary in our fandom, but it doesn't mean we can't enjoy good football.  Except Dallas, everyone hates Dallas.  And the Patriots, everyone hates the Patriots.  And Baltimore isn't even a team, they're Cleveland, Baltimore's team is in the Midwest somewhere.  Which of course means we hate the Browns too.  And there's..... well, you get the idea, love for everyone in this holiday season, except for those stinkin' Giants.

Ive been a Bills fan since '85. In recent years there have been so many times where we came out of the gate strong, only to fizzle by mid-season and fade away into the pack. I think we finally got over the hump. McBeane have us set up for the long term, and I cant wait to see what we do in January...and who knows? Maybe February, too. Go Bills!

The idea in Pittsburgh is that he's hurt.  Two weeks ago there were rumors he wasn't going to start and Ben quickly tweeted out that he was playing.  Before the Cincinnati game he was asked again if he was injured and replied that everyone is injured in some way this time of year.  He can't make accurate deep throws and everyone knows it so the defenses are jumping every route and their weak run game is fully exposed.  The biggest mistake the Steelers have made is not drafting Jalen Hurts when he was on the board.  Hurts won't be a superstar, but he will be an effective backup that the Steelers could have turned to, currently they have the Duck.

The final 19 seconds of the Miami game were magical, and I'm not a loyal fan of either team.  A great game throughout marred by a very questionable PI call seemingly handing the game to the Raiders.  Then just desserts with the prayer thrown up by Fitzy to blown coverage and the most obvious facemask penalty of the season getting the fish close enough for a winning field goal.  Very satisfying for fans of the game who hate the NFL PI rules.  There has to be some solution between giving teams a free 60 yards and DBs mugging receivers to prevent touchdowns like in college.  Perhaps a cap on penalty yards?  Spot of the foul capped at 30 yards?  Other ideas?

I’m a Bills fan, but I luv Fitz! Agreed, the end of the game was great (and the second guessing that Chuckie didn’t go for the TD as opposed to the field goal !)

I also think that a 15 or 20 yard max is more than enough of a penalty... too many touchdowns are gifted

Looks like the nfc east is still a toss up? Too much math to figure but it’s still possible for the Iggles to take it! Crazy year! I have a standing $50 bet with my brother that the Iggles will finish ahead of the Cowgirls. Could never figure him out how does a kid who grows up in South Jersey be a Cowgirls fan? I think he got dropped a lot as a baby... :dunno:

so, you giving him 2 twenties and a ten or one fifty dollar bill ??

I’m a Bills fan

my condolences ........

FWIW, so am I !

I also think that a 15 or 20 yard max is more than enough of a penalty... too many touchdowns are gifted

yes and no, when a DB mugs a wide receiver(on a deep route) just so the ball can't be caught then the penalty fits IMO.

While last nights Bills victory was enjoyable for us Bills fans it was also a reminder of how great a team the Pats have been. There are quite a few records that they have set that I doubt will ever be broken, certainly not in my lifetime. 9 Super Bowl appearances in 2 decades, six of them victories and the list goes on ..........

bills looked really good... pats dialed up everything they could think of on d, bills/j allen just had all the answers, very impressive

thought in the second half daddy bill b and son would come up w some scheme to stymie the bills offense, but it never happened

a number of strong teams in afc peaking at right time, see if they can give chiefs some real resistance

The poor Giants fans having to root for Philly, it must have been traumatic.  And then to have Pederson pull Hurts, who may have won the game, for the dud whatshisname in the fourth quarter was beyond painful for them.  Losing the meaningless for the Eagles game moved them from 9th to 6th in the draft which can sometimes be significant.  Trading Wentz should give them a plethora of additional picks.  Carson has been a good teammate, I wish him all the best.

Buffalo is that one team that can stay with the Chiefs.   It will be interesting to see how they handle the Colts on Saturday.  If they tear things up  (Vs. the Colts) the AFC (Chiefs included) should be hoping they get knocked out.  Allan loves the big games and to see how far he's come since year one is astounding.

The excuse was they wanted to see what Sudley had in a end of game situation.  Bullshit.  He's been on the team for years and has been put in numerous situations that have shown he's not an NFL quarterback.  It's why they drafted Hurts, I'd loved to have seen if Hurts could have pulled it out, we'd have actually learned something.  The test of character in the NFL is playing hard until the clock says 0:00 no matter what the game situation.  Pederson dumped that in favor of moving up three spots in the draft, disgusting.  You could see on his face that Jalen agreed with that assessment, I wouldn't blame him if he demanded a trade.  For those that don't know, I'm a die-hard Eagles and Steelers fan, Tomlin would never, ever make a decision like that.

Yes, media has painted them 10 feet high... but they played great to earn it.  No guarantees in the playoffs.  Indy could have won.  Refs got that fumble totally wrong.  WTF?  I almost tossed in my beer.  Here's to those responsible for that asinine call to working the freshman teams.

Then again, remind me when the Bills last won a superbowl.  Maybe Buffalo's major league baseball team won a world series lately, that's right, don't have one.  Perhaps their Basketball team has reached the NBA finals, nope?   But the Sabres have pulled it out at least once, right?  No?  Perhaps people living in the dreggs of sports infamy shouldn't be throwing stones from their glass houses, just sayin.

If Washington doesn't sign him to a middle level contract then some other team will;  Aaron Donald has broken ribs, Wolford out with a neck injury, Goff just had surgery on his thumb and Kupp strained a knee....but they won!; Indianapolis put-up a fight but it wasn't enough - that might be it for Rivers.  All the games were good on Saturday!

And there are three more playoff games today!!!!!!

Apples to oranges comparison IMO. Bflo, a small city that just happens to have a couple of major league sport teams. Philly, while shrinking in population is still considered a 'major' league town. So with that can you name me one city with four teams(continuous) since the beginning of the Super Bowl era with less Championships ?

For the record while Bflo will always be home my family has lived outside of Philly for 52 plus years and those of us in this area equate the sports teams to one giant 'sine wave' ! At least I got to see the best third baseman to play the game, from his beginning in Reading to retiring as a Philly !

As for yesterdays win over Indy, while not pretty, a win is a win ! I continue to be concerned with run defense and a lackluster pass rush

Sorry for giving you a hard time my friend, but a little perspective is good for all of us.  I do like the Bills for a good shot at the brass ring this year, they built their team the right way taking linemen in the draft first then adding the QB.  KC will have a say in that if they get that far.  I'm not at all confident my Steelers will get past the Browns tonight, I think they will, but I wouldn't bet the house.

The Eagles mortgaged their future to get Wentz and they're playing for it now.  For the record I was on board with the gamble, and it worked out to a degree, they did win a superbowl.  Carson hasn't been the same since his knee injury, last year it was always the knee not fully healed yet, then the back, he's physically not the same athlete and will likely never be.  And having spent all those draft picks the supporting cast has suffered, the O line is all old men and castoffs leaving a wounded Wentz to carry the team on his back.  He hasn't been successful in that.

For medium sized cities we can compare Pittsburgh, six Superbowl rings, back to back Stanley Cups, multiple World Series victories, they only lack basketball which has always died here.  So it's not the size of the city for everything.  Modern baseball financials make it very hard for smaller market cities, not impossible, just a lot harder.

The Chiefs have a hard time against very good defenses.  They are vulnerable as their defense is not on par with the top defenses in the NFL.  And do not count out the Packers with Rogers at QB.  The best in the NFL this year.

Head coaches in the NFL are administrators, it's the coordinators and position coaches who run the team.  Pederson put together one of the finest staffs in the league and I'd agree that that after Frank left the offense hasn't been the same.

Not a bigger first half debacle since the Atlanta-NE Superbowl.  In this one Ben couldn't run or throw to generate a Brady like comeback.  I know the 500 yards and all, he still had no control on long or short throws and couldn't escape pressure, he kept throwing the ball away to avoid contact.  He had a wonderful hall of fame career that's now over.

As a long-suffering Browns fan, last night was more than I could have ever imagined, especially considering the Browns had so many players out as well as several coaches.

No matter what happens next week, it's been a great season and the future looks bright. They have a coach who looks like the real deal, a nucleus of good young players, a bunch of draft picks this spring, and some salary cap space to work some deals. They're set at QB, RB, TE, and OL. They could use another WR, a DE, DT, LB and a S in case Grant Delpit isn't ready.
Title: Re: NFL 2020-2021

I think the Browns have a chance against the Chiefs. The Chiefs are a great team to be sure, but "juggernaut" doesn't exactly describe their play since the beginning of November. Every game they've won since then was by 6 points or less including Carolina (5-11), Las Vegas (8-8), Denver (5-11), and Atlanta (4-12). They played only 5 games all season against teams with winning records. All but one of those games were close.

KC ranks 21st in the NFL in rush defense and the Browns are 3rd in rush offense. I'm not predicting a win, but if the Browns can sustain drives and chew up clock with Chubb and Hunt, they stand a puncher's chance.

Over the past few years there has been a lot of grousing among Browns fans about their operations manager Paul Depodesta (of Moneyball fame). They thought a "baseball guy" and analytics had no place in football. Yet in consecutive hiring opportunities, Depodesta recommended that the Browns hire Sean McDermott in 2016 and Kevin Stefanski in 2019. Instead, the "football guys" in the organization opted for Hue Jackson and Freddie Kitchens. McDermott was hired the following year by the Bills and transformed that team, and Stefanski, as Vikings OC, had the #8 offense and made it to the division round of the playoffs.

Since then, McDermott and Stefanski have gone a combined 51-33 and 4 playoff appearances in 5 seasons and Jackson and Kitchens were a combined 9-46-1.

The Browns and Bills are definitely two hard-working, blue-collar teams that represent blue-collar towns.

all good stuff, as for the Bills and IMO, the group is in the best shape it's been in since Kelly / Levy. I attended my first Bills game at the old 'Rock Pile' back in '61, the year before we got Kemp off the waiver wire from the Chargers. My fingers are crossed .........

Ha ha, not afraid of the Chiefs are you?  Of course not, I'm sure you just want a home game.  The Browns were a great underdog with the best o-line in the league, but with the injuries I don't know what we'll see.  I don't expect them to get through the weekend, but they have a puncher's chance as any of the teams playing this weekend do.  A fine slate of games.

Well we have one half of that completed, good job Bills.  But I thought perhaps even a better show was had from the Bills fans, you guys did your city proud, they really turned out in full regalia and created enough noise for two false starts with a Covid mandated small crowd.

Team BFLO has not sensed being overwhelmed in any contest since October.  Their game appears to be elastic especially on defense.  Game plan and control is was I'm taking.  Take the pts and Bills on Sunday.  BTW I do like your F4 Phantom Avatar.

Sorry KC fans, Mahomes is in concussion protocal and almost always in these matters the player is not able to play the following week.  I don't know how much a team can tweak the system, can Andy exert any pressure to get a player released to play, I suspect not much.  Unfortunate that one of the league's stars may miss a playoff game.

No, not confused at all. I was referring to the AFL Championship game for the winner (KC) represented the AFL in the first 'World Championship' game. With Bflo winning the two previous AFL Championships we were praying for three peat , Kemp vs Dawson, but alas it was not to be.....

I'm pretty sure this coming Sundays game will represent the third time Bflo has had the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl by beating KC in a conference championship game.

Very entertaining football this year! Amazing players, plays, play-calling, etc. But I am so sick of ...

The first down hand point.
Defensive backs holding onto receivers' hip, arm, or jersey nearly every single play.
Players guilty of obvious infractions whining and drama-acting as if they'd been falsely accused.
Defensive player gorilla-chest-pound just because they made a routine tackle.
Extremely poor tackling this year. Perhaps too much emphasis on attempts to strip the ball?

But I really do enjoy the games, especially since I DVR every one so as to fast-forward past the embedded politics, Hollywood-style end zone celebrations, time-outs and commercials.

Praying for heavy snow at the games  :icon_twisted:

i agree the showboating has gotten to ridiculous proportions... but nfl playoff football is still among the best watches out there in sports - the competition is occurring at so many levels simultaneously

it is sooo hard playing defense... the rules are so stacked against the defense, all in the name of safety of course - but still, some of the calls are like 'heck what do expect the guy to do???', 275 pound guy going full speed at full momentum then stop cold in a nanosecond?

Mahomes has been cleared to play.  Lots of buzz about being cleared by both team and independent doctors.  At best the team getting out in front of the story, at worst crafting the cover up.  I'm a big fan of the kid and I'm glad he's playing, but no way a concussion heals in a week.
Title: Re: NFL 2020-2021

Apparently he didn’t have a concussion, it was a pinched nerve in his neck.
However, Josh Allen had a concussion last year and did play the following week, so it depends on many circumstances.
I am happy he’s playing, I only want the Bills to play and beat the best... no asterisks needed or wanted.

And if we do beat the champs, nothing (!) in my book would be worse than loosing to Brady in the SB, but nothing else!!!! (for this long suffering Bills fan that’s been through it all), would be sweeter than beating Brady in the Super Bowl.

Furious at both the Packers and the officials.  Eight points behind with two minutes left, goal to go, facing Tom Brady and you kick a field goal?   What the heck is wrong with you?  This is for the championship!  The Packers deserved to lose for that alone, but they had two interceptions late and went three and out both times.  Then improbably they stop Tampa while brilliantly managing the clock, but the refs, who had been letting the dbacks and receivers play the entire game, call a ticky tak PI giving Brady the win.  Very frustrating for a fan with no dog in the fight.

The Bills, well, were the Bills.  They played well, but were just outclassed by a superior team, which appears to be their history.  Here's to a great Superbowl.

From pee wee to the pros it's not about how well they might play in a week, it's about permanent brain damage from reinjuring a concussed brain.  How fast does a bad bruise heal?  One, two, three weeks?  That's what a concussion is, a brain bruise.  Mahomes is a great kid and I'm very happy to see him play, he risked a lot going on that field Sunday.  The NFL is a business, the concussion protocal is to reduce their liability exposure.  To think that stars aren't waived through to play in big games is naive.

Damn straight. During the regular season there's no way he plays 7 days after that standing 8 count last weekend. A lot easier to find 2 doctors in KC that say "..yep, he's good to go." on Championship Sunday though. It just makes a mockery of the protocol. "The answer to all your questions is money."

no doubt mahomes had that 'empty headed daze' at the start of the game, but he played very well and the neurons were definitely clicking.... still $$ and ratings are certainly at work with the nfl and the concussion protocol was almost certainly quashed in his case

green bay's 4th quarter fg was a weak call for sure but they had all timeouts and over 2 minutes on the clock, i can see a rationale for that - bear in mind prior to that point tb12 threw all those int's giving the pack 3 extra possessions twice aaron rogers and the offense failed to convert

as for the pass interference call yes the refs had swallowed their whistles most of the game but that shirt tug was blatant it most certainly slowed the receiver down, the damn white shirt tail was pulled out couple feet long right there in the middle of the field

Mahomes ran for his life every single pass play,  every one.  You can't play quarter back that way.  He gave a great effort in the attempt, but the two backup offensive tackles never made a block the entire game.   I neglected to employ the first rule of football, lines win games, I was beguiled by KC's team speed.  On the other side Brady turned in his usual consummate professional performance, he was mostly mistake free, but his O line kept him clean for the greater part of the game, he never moved off of his spot.  Tampa Bay's offensive and defensive lines won the game, congrats to the winners.

so true... it is the beef upfront that often determines outcomes of important games...tampa bay was superior to kc both sides of the ball (gronk is vastly underrated in his run blocking... just huge) - i too was enamored by kc's skill/speed players... but successful smashmouth football wins over shiny flashy objects every time

Same menu served here yesterday. It was easily the highlight of the day. The game was a mess. As mentioned already, the line play (especially on offense) of the Chiefs was atrocious. Most here were snoozing away by the end of the 3rd quarter. The half time show was clearly a great catalyst for the snooze though.

Got free dinner from Primantti Brothers.   Ordered an hour before the kickoff, they said ready in a half, sent the boys.  Two hours later they come back with a free meal, the restaurant had lost the order, they got a $30 gift card on top of it.   The meal was beyond excellent.
