Frank Sinatra
a Swingin' Affair

"In some ways, A Swingin' Affair! is "Songs for Swingin' Lovers!, Pt. 2," following the same formula of Sinatra's hit album of the previous year."   A fun, delightfully dated, and decent sounding record (most of the Sinatra records I've heard sound like crap, either because they were recorded that way, or because they were loved to death on someone's console turntable with a penny taped to the tonearm).

John Coltrane / Frank Wess (but really a Mal Waldron led session) - Wheelin' & Dealin'

From 1957, recorded just 5 days after JC recorded Blue Train. (Warning to JC fans - not a typical JC style album as he is just a side man here with Waldron heading the tracks. But still good jazz nonetheless.)

Marty Paich Quartet Introducing ART PEPPER

Jazzy,
Do you have the original vinyl of this, or is it the CD?  The AllMusic review says some of this music on this rare LP was rereleased on other records, but not which ones.  Do you know?
Thanks,
Evan

Hank Mobley
No Room for Squares
Blue Note 75th Anniversary Reissue LP (2013)

Lee Morgan trumpet
Hank Mobley tenor sax
Andrew Hill piano
John Ore bass
Philly Joe Jones drums
Donald Byrd trumpet
Herbie Hancock piano
Butch Warren bass

Picked this up new last weekend primarily since I've yet to not like a record Rudy Van Gelder recorded.  A bit boppy for my tastes, at least this morning.  Will definitely come back to it at a later date.  Excellent recording and pressing (this is the regular record, not 180g).

Edit:  My first judgment was rash--I need to learn to wait until at least the third track before deciding.  Glad I kept listening, as the it keeps getting better!
Edit 2: Ok, this album's great.  The first track is not my fave, but the rest of the album is really sweet.  Recommended.  And note to self, listen to at least the entire first side before deciding one way or the other.

Jazzy,
I see you're a fan of the Velvet Fog!  Cool!  Why am I not surprised?
Yes the Velvet Fog is great. BTW He absolutely hated the name the Velvet Fog.Fred Robbins the late DJ gave him that name and somehow it stuck.

John Coltrane - Bye Bye Blackbird

Only two long tracks on this, the last of four live John Coltrane albums to be released by the Pablo label, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. All four titles -- the others are the double disc "Afro-Blue Impressions" and the single discs "The Paris Concert" and "The European Tour" -- feature the Classic Quartet of 'Trane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in performances from a European tour in the fall of 1962.

Great story, Jim!
Thanks for your feedback, fellas.  I would like to encourage all of you to post some of your experiences.  That makes for a heap more entertainment than just what's spinning wouldn't you agree?  Ok, then, post away and thanks in advance.
