Tommy Smith
Sound of Love
pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Billy Drummond

Kinda background music, but enjoyable, well recorded, and mellow.

All Music review by Alex Henderson
...It's frustrating that the Scottish tenor saxman doesn't surprise us more and that he pretty much sticks to often-recorded classics like "Solitude," "In a Sentimental Mood," and "Chelsea Bridge." This isn't to say that well-known standards should have been off limits, but how about surprising listeners by embracing some of Ellington and Strayhorn's lesser-known ballads as well? Heaven knows, one could go on and on about all the gems they wrote that were never as famous as "Prelude to a Kiss" or "Sophisticated Lady." Interestingly, Smith's most adventurous choice isn't by Ellington or Strayhorn -- it's the very Ellingtonian Charles Mingus piece "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love." But while this album could have taken more chances, it's certainly enjoyable. A 30-year-old Smith plays with plenty of soul throughout the CD, and the captivating Barron does the same. Emphasizing ballads, Sound of Love essentially functions as mood music -- seductive, evocative, lower-the-lights mood music. Smith is playing it safe this time, but he's also playing from the heart.

If you like Bossa Nova you will like her playing, from Allmusic guide - "Versatile pianist who has played straight-ahead jazz, fusion, and Brazilian jazz with equal skill. "

I saw her live last month at Birdland, a great performance.

Dunno this one but I DO know that is a good label for well recorded sound.  Something bout those Scandinavians  Must be the long nights.  Cheers.

Tommy Smith--Blue Smith

Hmmm a bit bebobby for my taste on first listen, but it's good playing and recording, so there's hope it may grow on me.

AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson:
Guitarist John Scofield has never had a problem interacting with saxophonists in a piano-less environment; anyone who admires the strong rapport that him and saxman Joe Lovano have enjoyed when there is no pianist on board can attest to that. So it isn't surprising that Scofield and Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith prove to be a strong combination on 1999's Blue Smith, which finds the two forming a piano-less quartet with upright bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn. The only familiar song on this post-bop is "Amazing Grace"; all of the other selections were written by Smith, who keep things unpredictable and provides a variety of blues-influenced material for the quartet to work with. Scofield excels on everything that Smith throws his way, and that includes the funky "Rain Dance" and the angular "Dr. Sco," as well as the Native American-influenced "Rain Dance" and the John Coltrane-minded "Touch Your Toes." As the title indicates, Blue Smith is a CD with a lot of blues feeling; it isn't an album in which Smith (who is heard on both tenor and soprano) plays 12-bar blues numbers exclusively, but it is an album in which Smith and Scofield never forget the importance of blues feeling. Blue Smith is among his strongest albums.

Jim, check out the samples--I think you'll enjoy it.  Those "Scandahoovians" definitely like their jazz and can do a sweet job of recording it.

This album was one of the first SACDs released--I remembered seeing it all the time as a review piece when I got my first SACD player 15 or so years ago, but just picked up this used copy recently.

Gene,
I'll keep an eye out for her.  I like just about all Latin rhythms I've heard, so I'd probably like her as well.

Thanks,
Evan
