Title: Jim Salk-four new designs?
Post by: me_like_audio on 2 Apr 2007, 03:36 pm
I noticed a couple times where you mentioned new Salk designs.  Could you shed some light to these statements?  What is up your sleeve?  Will you be replacing the HT3 with another design, look, drivers?  Will these be "upgrades" to your current line or "fill ins"?

I never like to talk about designs before they are finished.  The reason is simple.  Despite our best efforts, not every design we undertake results in a speaker we want to put our name on.  And I don't want people to wait anxiously anticipating a design that may never materialize.

That said, I can tell you that one of them is a very large 3-way center channel that will mate with the V3's.  It will feature the same family of drivers.  We have already glued up the test cabinets so this design may be ready to announce in a few weeks.

Another design that is forthcoming was the result of a commission to produce a high-efficiency (about 95db) 3-way speaker.  This speaker will be quite large with a very complicated cabinet design.  So it will be expensive and appropriate in only certain circumstances.

The other two designs are too preliminary to talk about since they may never materialize.  But they are the result of customer requests for designs we don't presently offer.

As for a follow-up to the HT3's, if that ever materializes, it will not be a short-term project.  It took almost a year to settle on the woofer for the HT3's.  And we have just started talking to TC Sounds about a new custom woofer design for a potential new flagship model.  But none of the other drivers have been selected yet, so anything more would be pure speculation.

Obviously, we think the HT3's are a spectacular speaker and it would only make sense to bring out a higher-end speaker if it was clearly superior - a very tall order indeed.

So I wouldn't say a successor is imminent or even that there will be one.  But we are contantly evaluating drivers and potential new designs where they make sense.

I hope this helps.
