I am sharing this not to open up a discussion but to let those of you that know Gary know how he is doing. If you have any questions about this please send me an e-mail about it.
Wednesday Gary was in the bathroom shaving when his nose started bleeding (a lot) and he passed out. When he passed out he hit his neck and jaw on the counter. It is badly bruised. And he is pretty sure his defibrillator kicked in and hit him pretty hard several times. That means his heart stopped again. He has a black eye bruised ribs and he lost a big piece of skin off his arm. Some of these injuries are consistent with him flopping around on the floor being hit with the defibrillator. He woke up on the floor about three hours later with blood all over everything,
So he picked himself up and made it to a phone that belonged to a friend. He called and said come get me. He sounded really bad. I told him I could be there by around noon the next day.
So I emptied my trailer and went down to the tax office and updated the tag on it. My wife and I left Thursday (yesterday) and went down to Dallas to get him. So that is why I was not answering the phone yesterday. The temperature was really cold, the wind was blowing, and there was a threat of snow. But we didn't get snowed on.
Gary had been in bed all morning when we got there and was not prepared for a move. He did not look good and had not eaten much in three days. I got him to eat a banana that I brought him and a chewable gummy vitamin. He looked and felt better by the end of the day.
We got one load but need to go back for another, but right now it is snowing. And we still need to go unload the trailer. We pulled in last night in the dark and cold and decided to unload the next day.
My mother-in-law has an empty small two bedroom rent house that we have fixed up and are moving him into later today. I will try to get him back to eating on a regular basis and see if I can get his strength back up. He has been out of all his meds for several weeks two. I'll have to figure something out there. He needs some of those pretty badly.
I don't know where this will go from here. He is one of the greatest audio minds of our time and I'd love to get him back to doing all the great things he has done in the past, but right now the goals are short term and revolve around stabilizing his health.
Keep him in your prayers.

If you don't have health, you don't have anything. He has our best wishes and prayers.

Danny, you're a saint! :notworthy:
Has he contacted the drug companies abut getting free meds?
PM me with where to send a check for his meds. I no speaka PayPal.

Danny please send Gary our love and prayers. He is very lucky to have a friend like you. God bless you and Gary.

Bless you Danny - you are an amazing friend to Gary! I hope that it all somehow works out. Thoughts and prayers are being sent your way and I hope Gary gets well quickly.
-
Gary has an amazing friend in you, Danny.
Is there no 'net' or other social medicine program in Texas for folks such as Gary? Those who cannot afford to pay for meds have no choice but to go without - is this how it is? Are there no federal programs?

Guys, now that he is here within our care we will explore all possible means of assistance. Let's don't turn this into a thread about our health care system.
-
God bless you, Danny.
I sure hope to see you up and running, Gary. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Godspeed on your journey back to recovery.

I'm in to help, keep me posted once you guys have talked. In the meantime, I have an original version Purity Audio Harmony Tube Buffer in great condition I'll let go for $1000 (more than half off retail) and 100% of that goes to Gary. Great audiophile grade component to add some tube flavor to your setup. PM me if interested.

Get better, Mr. Dodd!

I hope that Gary recovers and with a friend like you, all the better. It seems like you are more like a brother than a friend to him. All my prayers are with your and Gary.

Occasionally, we find ourselves presented with a unique opportunity to do something heroic. Sometimes it might not seem like a big deal to us, other times it's at considerable personal cost.
What gives me hope for humanity is to know that people grasp those opportunities, whether on their own, through membership of a religious group, through charitable work or even just by remembering all the good that comes from paying our taxes as well as the stuff we'd like to change.
It's evident that Danny isn't sharing this information for recognition, though it's well deserved. So let's celebrate our humanity and take this as a reminder to keep our eyes open for chances to help people that may depend, sometimes uniquely, on us.
-
Much love to you and your wife and Gary. I hope Gary gets his tube glow back soon.

Thanks to Danny for helping Mr. Dodd
and hope Mr. Dodd get better...

There are federal and state programs designed to help in these situations. Mr. Dodd can apply for housing assistance, food stamps, Medicare & Medicaid, SSD, daily personal care assistance ... It's a PITA dealing with the bureaucracy but at the end, Mr. Dodd will have the care he needs and assistance to get back on his feet.
I think in PA, if you're a mother of one and job pays less than $68K, state advise get on government doe and stop working. With all the programs available, you will lose $$ by working.
I suggest pick up the phone and start calling and best of luck to Mr. Dodd.
-
I like to add, if I was in Mr. Dodd situation, I surely don't want my life and every mishap broadcast on the internet. I'll it at that.

Thanks for the update(s) Danny.
Hey have you considered something like a GOFUNDME for Gary? I have a friend with an incurable disease that has one. I'm not sure how they work other than I think it's like an anonymous giving site - i.e. gofundmgarydodd. May be worth looking into.
Another thought - since we probably all have a number of unused power cords and other cables around, maybe we can do a "cords of love" effort - we donate unused cords and somebody keep an inventory list to buy from. All proceeds to meds, etc.

We have been feeding him and resting him. He looks a little better now in the time he has been here. His stress level is down now and he is resting much better than he has been. Baby steps right now.

Hello,
Chords of love? anyone interested in welding wire. I could ask at my company if there is new old stock. Looks like magnet wire so one needs to find teflon tubing to have it isolated. Greetings, Edward

Glad to hear some positive news. :thumb: :thumb:
As others have suggested, I think there is the potential to get a campaign of donating the proceeds of the sales of unused/no longer needed equipment and accessories, as well as a "go fund me" type of web fund raising that may help out.

Well, we were going to wait for the weather to clear so we could get back down to Dallas a pick up the rest of his stuff. But things sometimes never work out the easy way.
Gary's X was the one on the lease at the apartment. So technically she was the one being evicted, and Gary was a guy living there and not on the lease. The apartment manager told Gary's X that locks on the doors would be changed Sunday morning. So she told Gary that message at 3:00 pm yesterday. So we had to take off right then to go get the rest of his stuff.
My Dad helped out and followed us in his pick-up. We took the Suburban and trailer again. It was cold and the roads were wet...
Gary's X helped herself to some of Gary's personal belongings, took the car, his grill, and what last remaining money he had to his name. That put some added stress on Gary that he didn't need.
We loaded everything and both vehicles were completely full. We did get everything else he had left there that he wanted though.
The roads started freezing on the way home and there was some slip sliding around. And some slow moving at times. The bridges were solid ice and some stretches of road were also solid ice. We made it back in though and got home near 4:00 am.
So it was a long day...
But we are back, safe and sound, and we got Gary moved. Now on to the next challenge.
-
Wish I had known. My son lives in Dallas and has a Suburban and a car hauler. Where are you based, Danny?
-
Where are you based, Danny?
Danny is in Wichita Falls area. I'm only an hour out of Dallas but my trailer is open, not enclosed,
so really not much use in this kind of weather.
Really strange thing is I saw Danny last Saturday and picked up some LGK drivers and did ask
him about Gary and he said he didn't know and it had been a while since he had talked to Gary.
Don't think that day either one of us could have imagined what sort of perdiciment he was in.
Man what a terible thing to have happen to him. Thank God he called the right guy!
-
It was a rough night for Gary. His heart stopped last night in his sleep and his defibrillator kicked in and knocked him off into the floor. He's hurting badly today.
My wife just left with him to take him to where his loaded stuff is to try and find one last prescription refill that he has so we can get his meds. We are hoping this will get his system back into control.
If they can't find the old prescription then she is taking him to the hospital.
-
What a trying time for Gary! GOD bless you and your wife for what you're doing for him, Danny.
-
Wow, this puts things n perspective, doesn't it? Makes one appreciate his or her blessings, 'cause as the song says, "There but poor fortune, go you and I". The people around me are dealing with all kinds of health issues (that's what happens if you live long enough---I'm 64), from spinal damage to lung cancer. I can't imagine what would become of Gary if not for Danny. Has he no family? Ex's don't count!
-
Thanks for all the updates Danny. Many of us AudioCircle members have been very fortunate to enjoy some of your & Mr. Dodd's impressive creations. I'm pulling for Gary mightily & sending good vibes your way ...
-
We got his meds. Now my wife is taking him somewhere to feed him and get some pills down.
She said he could barely walk and I know walking just a little bit leaves him gasping for air. So we are really hoping getting him back on his meds will make a big difference.
-
Sending positive thoughts your way.
-
Danny,
Thanks for keeping all of us posted.
Please let Gary know that a whole bunch of folks are having good thoughts for him.
I only hope that if I ever have to go through something like this that I have Gary's strength. And friends like you and your wife.
-
Gary says it will take a couple of days for his meds to really get him regulated again, but as of tonight Gary seems to be marginally better.
He has been resting by the fire in the fireplace and watching some Street Outlaws to relax.
Keep the good thoughts, well wishes, and prayers flowing this way. Thanks for that.
-
May the Lord bless you Danny. There are friends who stick closer than brothers.
Love in action!
Praying for you and Mr. Dodd.
-
Wowwww, Danny and family have set the bar extremely high for compassion. The saying, BS walk's and action's talk seems appropriate here. Danny, knowingly or not has given many of us high standards to strive for. Sometimes it's friends who do the tough job, but hopefully it will be very rewarding for those involved. I've never had any interactions with Gary, but I'll take it that he's a good person from the way Danny and family have taken this upon themselves. Then again I've never read or heard any thing but positive remarks about Gary. Hopping Gary gets well soon and Danny and family are blessed for the tremendous job they have taken upon themselves. Most, well maybe not most but, some of us can only wish for the friendship that they enjoy.
-
Wow Danny! You and your family are truly Gary's angels. Please give Gary our best and let him know he is in many of our thoughts and prayers. Please keep us up to date.
Kindest regards,
Guy

An update...
I had to take Gary to the hospital today. It was just getting harder and harder for him to breath. Looks like he has some fluid build up in his lungs. The doctor I spoke with said it was a common with heart failures. They gave him a Lasix drug to help get the fluid off of his lungs. He is going to be staying the night there as well.
-
Gary didn't get much sleep last night. That lasix stuff had him up urinating pretty often. Since last night Gary said he had filled seven and a half of the quart containers they have him going in. Yes, they measure it.
It is getting the fluid off his lungs though. He said his breathing is almost back to normal, and he is feeling much better. And he's hungry.
They also gave him and echo cardiogram and are trying to get up to speed with everything that has been done to him.
-
That's great news, glad to hear he is getting some treatment and that they are looking tinot everything :)
Just getting the fluid out of the lungs will make Gary feel a TON better, after spending all those years on hemodialysis, I can relate. It is not a pleasent feeling when your ability to stay O2 saturated is dimiished
Let's hope they follow up really well with Gary and get him on a treatment plan that will keep him feeling as good as possible long term :thumb:

I have Gary home again. He is breathing easy now.

Looking forward to seeing you both in April!

Thanks for the update Danny, great news.

Our whole family prayed here in Portland for him today and will continue to do so.
Back in Albuquerque on Monday.
-
Gary has had about three really good days and appears to have turned a corner. Being back on his meds and eating regular meals has gone a long way. Taking away a lot of worry and stress has gone a long way as well. I also got him on some vitamins and mineral supplements. I took him to his new house last night for him to spend his first night there. Being well enough to be on his own again is another mile stone. I am even seeing some real ambition to get back to building and making some stuff again. Seeing some of the old Gary again is a blessing.
-
Fantastic news! I know it's 2 steps forward & 1 step back type of progress along the way, but this is really great to hear. Danny needs to add guardian angel to his resume'. :thumb:

His health seems to have improved greatly. Next is to get him back working again and to recover financially. He is set up and ready for repairs or mods right now if anyone needs anything.
-
Danny,
I came to AC only after his health failed, but I know many here loved his works of genius. For which components is he best known? What genius can he bestow onto components not created by him?

Gary is most known for his battery power tube pre-amps and tube amplifiers. Tubes amps vary from small battery powered units to big mono-blocks. He has built phono stages and head phone amps in the past as well. He can work on just about anything though.
If you guys want to ask him about something contact him on his cell: 469-263-9652

Thanks Danny,
Glad to hear he is doing better. I feel silly asking, but I actually would like him to repair my Dodd monoblock. One of them keeps blowing fuses. I'd like to send it to him (might as well send both to get the other checked out too). That is if you think he's up to it. I don't want to put pressure on him.
Larry
-
If there is any mods he could do to it that would be great too. I believe my 50 watt monos and the battery pre were part of his first twenty in that line. Oh and to anyone looking to get a masterpiece of tube bliss. You can't beat any of Gary's offerings. Works of art I tell you. Built like tanks too.

Larry, just give him a call.
