Odyssey Khartago amplifier issue
« on: 20 Jan 2022, 03:59 pm »
Hello, A fuse on the left channel has blown on the amplifier. I replaced the fuse and it was back up and running. After a few days when I turn on the amplifier it makes a loud buzzing noise back by the on off switch.  Could this be an issue with the power supply? Thank you for any input.

Using:
Quicksilver Line Stage preamplifier
Magnepan LRS 650 speakers

Hi Musicrover,

Sorry for the lack of response - it’s been very hectic for the last several weeks I suspect. My suggestion would be to call Klaus late in the day to ask about this.

I sent the unit back to the audio dealer I purchased it from,
The Music Room Audio for testing and troubleshooting. Noted below is my email exchange:

TMR - “We so far haven't been able to replicate the issue with general testing, it's been passed to our repair specialists to try and look into the unit further. I would expect another day or two for that to happen”.

Me - I contacted the manufacturer and they had me check the fuses,  one had blown, I replaced it however the unit made a loud buzzing noise coming from the back of the amplifier by the on off switch. At that point I shut it down.

TMR - Hello Jeff, Thanks for following up, it appears the unit is working well. There were some solder points on the internal boards that were faulty and we have corrected. Normally this would be about $300 in labor, however since you bought from us, we are only charging a 1 hour minimum of the $95 and return shipping. If this is agreeable, I will get an invoice over to you and we can get this shipped back to you asap.

I paid for repairs and shipping. I plugged the unit in and it has the same buzzing noise.

I contacted Klaus to get his feedback and he suggested I leave it on for a few days., However the buzzing is still there.

I contacted TMR. Here is there response: “Hello Jeff,
Thank you for the video, this sounds like transformer buzz, and can differ based on the power coming into the home. Are you using any line conditioning etc.? Having some transformer noise is normal on any unit, and based on the power coming into the building that can change from place to place. We can get this back to us to look over again, however this was quiet here and I suspect that we will not be able to do anything to quiet this any more for you with anything we can do to the unit”.

I have plugged this amplifier in at different locations, Office, neighbors home, a friends home with the same reults. The amplifier is not next to or connected to any other equipment.

Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks for the input. FYI, the amplifier was dead quite before the fuse blew.

Get a humdinger from AVA, it will block the source of the buzz if it's from your power line.

I have tried a Furman M8X2 Merit Series power conditioner but nothing has changed. Would the humdinger from AVA be worth a try?

Definitely call Klaus. From your post it appears that the unit will make the loud buzzing noise without anything plugged into it. Thus I would consider taking it to work or someone else's house to see if it behaves similarly.

I have taken the amplifier to my office, a friends house and my neighbors home. Same result.

Could the transformer be touching the cover?

I don't think the cover Is touching anything,  I removed the cover and plugged the amplifier in with the same results.

How old is the amp?  I see that Odyssey has a two year guarantee, and if it really had cold solder joints I'd have pushed for factory assistance.

You've probably checked the transformer bolt and cover already, but if something's loose it could amplify the buzz substantially.

I have a new Khatargo mono doing the same thing, the stereo Khatargo is quiet.
The mono Khatargo hums no matter where it's plugged in.
AVA Humdinger seemed to quiet it down at first.
Something's weird as the two Khatargos are plugged into the Humdinger; I have a Bryston 3B plugged into an APC H-15 power conditioner and when I turn the power conditioner on THAT hums and the humming Khatargo gets quiet.
That mono Khatargo isn't dead silent but it's acceptable.

Power transformer hum is the bane of hifi amps.  It's even worse with tube amps.  It's almost always a problem with the house wiring (at least for me it was).  Steve, I'd say get a 2nd humdinger and plug the APC into that.  That should make everything quiet again.

A more expensive solution is to get a PS Audio power regenerator.  For me, this dealt with both transformer hum as well has speaker hum.

It probably is with the house wiring.
I left them running around the clock and that humming mono amp will get really quiet, start buzzing a bit, get quiet, repeat.
Maybe Satan has taken up residence in my breaker box?  That seems to be the only logical explanation.
