I've run two Shelter carts, which are relatively low compliance, without a need to increase effective mass or damping. Damping in effect increases an arm's effective mass, but my experience was not that you needed to increase damping with my Shelters. You may want to compare compliance units with the 901 and 501mkII and the Shilabe.
I am sensitive to overdamping, and IME damping on the Shelters was similar to what worked best on medium compliance carts I use (DV 20xl, Benz ACE SL).
