It's an anime on Netflix and it lulls you in at first.  The art is beautifully done and the characters are interesting and relatable.  And then it rips your heart out.  But it does it slowly and with an aching melancholy.  If you've ever been through real grief, it's an amazing show.

Also, I found this excellent video/interview with a US soldier, veteran of combat, and they use Violet Evergarden as a lens through which to examine trauma and difficult re-integrating into 'normal' civilian life.  Very powerful stuff:
