Looking for replacement headphone cable
« on: 18 Mar 2024, 01:42 am »
The cable that came with my Drop+DCA Aeon Closed X headphones is too short, so I’ve been using a cable extension. The connector on the cable extension is now failing. I’m thinking instead of buying another cable extension I would just by a longer replacement cable to eliminate the extension as an additional point of failure. I’m looking for something well made and easy on the budget (under $100).

I thought about trying these.

https://hartaudiocables.com/products/custom-dual-push-pull-balanced-headphone-cable-for-dca-mr-speakers?variant=43107687661789

However, I noticed they are covered with some kind of woven sleeve and am concerned about it being noisy whenever I move and it rubs against anything. The cable that came with my headphones is smooth and doesn’t make any noise, but sadly it’s too short.

Since that cable is custom, and therefore not returnable, I was hoping someone here who has tried these cables can tell me if they are noisy or not, or if there is another brand I should consider.

Thanks.

I had ordered two times from AudioGradeCables in Ebay.
The email talk was courteous and First Class with Susan, no bull email as Decware, Schiit Audio, HifiMan-USA or Beyma-USA, prices yet are low, free shipping and well packed product.

The XLR-4 ballaced cable for my HE400 was an upgrade in soundstage just out of the box over the stock Canare Japanese cable, I will order again next month.

For anyone that comes across this thread, I bought the cable from Hart which arrived today.  While it is more microphonic than the stock cable, I don’t notice it when music is playing.  It seems well made and is very flexible (nice!).

If you mean say the cable are microphonic when the hand touch it, you can encapsulate the cable with a thick layer of spagetti cloth.

Have received a 2 meters XLR4 headphone cable from AudioGradeCables.
Great value by $32.40usd free shipping and friendly email communication.
They have various wire choices, some have cloth tubing.

I have had excellent success with entry-to-mid level Arctic Cables.  Am currently using the $109 DEFINE with my K812.

Oh nice, the K812 looks a rare HP.
Do you could inform us how large is the K812 soundstage?

Soundstage from the AKG K812 is on par with, or slightly larger than, that of the HD8xx--one of the largest (if not THE largest) I have experienced with headphones.  The Arctic Cables DEFINE enhances that sense of large scale, too.

You're welcome.
The DEFINE cable is normally of braided design.  However, due to the diminutive single-entry connector on the K812, the cable pictured is instead of twisted, sleeved construction.
The wire is NeoTech UPOCC copper.

For ever better soundstage and image try XLR4 balanced connector.

As-is, i.e. without appreciable modification, a balanced XLR is not possible with the K812's present single-entry connector [from what I understand].
Why AKG did not implement dual entry with their flagship K812 baffles me.
