Title: RMAF 2011 - Vendors To Hit
Post by: Tyson on 1 May 2011, 11:05 pm
Starting this topic as a placeholder for a list of vendors I'm planning on hitting at the next RMAF.  Starting it now so I have more of a chance to hone and refine it before the show actually rolls around.

I'm also open to requests, so if there's a particular manufacturer you want me to check out, just add it on.  Obviously I'll just my judgement whether or not to take any specific rec's :P  And if I don't accept a rec, no worries, it just means that I don't like you  :icon_twisted:

Fair warning - if you suggest I check out any single driver speakers, I will beat you.

To start off, here's a beginning list.  This can and will change over time:

GR Research Speakers
Salk Speakers
Daedalus Audio Speakers
Empirical Audio
Dynaudio Speakers
JH Audio (IEM's)
Audez'e (planar headphones)
MA Recordings
Fritz Speakers
Tri-Audio
Lansche Audio Speakers
Sonist Speakers
Mark Neumann Coliseum Speakers
TAD Speakers

First Sound Preamps
Merlin Speakers
Purist audio
TAD
Green Mountain Audio
High Water Sound
Odyssey Audio
Rockport Speakers
Tidal Speakers
Selah Speakers
Linkwitz Orion Speakers
Vienna Acoustics
Zu Audio
Soundfield Audio
Hansen Speakers
Audio Artistry
Purity Audio

The Nola Metro Grand Reference speakers sounded amazing last year, I was blown away by how much high quality bass a pair of 6-1/2 woofers produced. The highs were clear and spacious too; with a frequency response of 26 Hz to 45 kHz they certainly qualify as unique. I wanted a pair until I found out the price, $22,000.

High Water Audio - Jeff's Catano's (sp?) rooms always get high marks and his was the favorite for my wife and me at a show last year.  Before hearing the Aspara speakers he used, I'd never really been drawn to horns, but they sounded so, so good that I immediately started scheming about how I could get a pair sometime in the future.  Definitely worth a few songs.

Tyson and Jason,

I enjoyed the dinners last year (one with you guys and another with Ted b, BRM, et al.) but I got to thinking we could do better if we cater a dinner party at one of the bigger rooms with a lot of the guys we have befriended on AC.  If the hotel allows it, or even using Marriott catering, I bet we can do better than eating at the restaurants.  I know I can do much better with wine (better wine at cheaper price) which I can drop ship to a local member.

Do you guys want to work together to organize a Saturday Banquette?

Whichever vendor that will let us use the room will be a can't miss room!

I don't know if they'll be at RMAF, but I'd highly recommend checking out Tonian Acoustics if they are. With very modest ancillaries they far and away made the most compelling music at the California Audio Show last year. The closest approximation to a live event I've heard in a hotel room in a long time. Resonating cabinets, AER and PHY full range drivers augmented with ribbon tweeters...YUM!. Also, technically NOT single drivers due to the ribbon tweeters, so beat down unnecessary.

Chairguy,
Yep, last year I put the planning off till the last minute and there were some vendors I didn't get a chance to see, RMAF is just too huge to go without a plan.  Doing it this way lets me slowly accrue things over time.

Woodsyi,
It's a possibility, you could send me the wine and we'd just have to get something catered.  Although getting a Vendor to participate might be hard, since I get the feeling most of them want a change of scenery for dinner after being stuck in their rooms all day.

Jason,
Bummer about AK and Geddes, they are some of the best speaker builders around.

Phantabulous idea all around.  Is there a nearby restaurant or catering facility we can rent out for the evening and make it an AudioCircle shindig? Could be more than we all want to handle for a 'fun' occasion, tho(?)

I think that would negate our ability to ship in wine as they'd want to serve it to us.

Hey, ship in 3 glassfuls for me woodsyi/Rim...that seems to be all the ole' lightweight here needs to get stonkin' drunk in the hi altitude  :duh:

The warmth effect comes from the output transformers in the non-OTL amps, it also veils the music.

It is Jeff Catalano and his shop is called High Water Sound (http://www.highwatersound.com/).

I have known Jeff for 15+ years and he definitely knows his music and gear!

His room has a few constants year after year...

Always has tubes
Always has vinyl
Always sounds damn good!!

Looks like Audio Unlimited will be there this year.

From Audiogon:

05-16-11: Audio_unlimited
The official report.....

The sale went very well and for the first few hours it resembled a crazed mob at Walmart clamoring for the last Playstation on release day. Sales remained steady through the rest of the day with some of the biggest sales towards the end of the day but the most volume at the beginning. It took most of the day today to simply deal with the overflow from Saturday and ship the requests from out of town folks who were smart enough to request an inventory list and reserve some of the goodies.

It was a great tragedy to have lost John at the young age of 59 but it was truly a pleasure to have worked with him for just short of 11 years and see his youthful enthusiasm for all things in life, especially good sound. It was our pleasure to serve the audio community and fulfill the dreams of our clients.

At the moment, it is true that the showroom is being closed and the future is uncertain. For 2011, our RMAF rooms on the Mezzanine will remain and will feature a tribute to John Barnes.

It is too soon to see what the future holds as the dust has yet to begin to settle.

For now, there are still some great deals to be had for those that care to inquire and much of the remaining gear will find its way here soon.

Happy Listening!

-Carl

Tyson, don't miss the MBL room if you never have heard those speakers. MBL always seems to play the system painfully loud, so tell them to turn it down. The MBL's were the absolute best imaging loudspeakers in 1981 and probably the very best today. Price was high then, and much higher today. But well worth to look and listen, I think that is still free.

Anthony Gallo will not be there.

Emprical Audio will have Steve's latest greatest maxed version of his DAC (including "the bronze"), BPT will be have their newest "naked" power cords (you must be 21 or over to see them, any age to hear them), GIK will have their coolest room treatments, Mach2Music will have their latest 2011 MAC Mini and external battery powered HD--all playing through the YG Acoustics "best speakers in the world" (the TAD connection fell through). This will be a most musical and revealing system. Bring your favorite CDs or Hi-Rez tunes on a USB stick.

Tyson, Jason, et al,

Please try to stop by the Modwright room 1010.

Dan will be introducing his new integrated amp, the KWI 200

The amp will be playing through a pair of  BOLDER/Daedalus Speaker cables into my personal set of Daedalus Athenas

Forgive the blatant plug, but I am very proud to have a pair of Lou's creations and excited to think that many AC members will have a chance to hear my own speakers.

BTW, the speakers in Dan's room will be in quarter-sawn white oak.

Problem - some vendors I could not find, so if someone can let me know the rooms they are in, I will add them to our spreadsheet, otherwise I'm deleting them:

Mark Neuman Coliseum Speakers
Rockport Speakers
Selah Audio Speakers
Vienna Acoustics

Absolutely! All demo cables will be available @ 30% off list. Larger discounts will apply for multiple purchases. New, custom order lengths will be 20% off. The 2 demo Alchemist conditioners have already been sold, but the new HE Mk II demo conditioner cords are available.

Regards,
Paul

We hope everyone will stop by room 522. We will be debuting the Purity Ultra GT with full silver autoformer attenuation, the Harmony balanced buffer and Purity Power power supply.

Albert Vonschweikert will be debuting his new speaker, the VR-44 Aktive and will be driven by a pair of Digital Amp Company Cherry Ultra Mono amplifiers.

Looking forward to seeing all the AC members I met last year and making some new friends meeting those who will be there this year.

1010 with Modwright Instruments and Daedalus Speakers
1118 with Lindemann

I'd like to invite all to our martini/wine reception in room 1018 on Friday and Saturday evenings starting at 5:00PM. We'll be serving martinis made with Swedish fingerling potato vodka as well as some killer wines from Italy and Spain.

Beer takes up too much room! Besides, martinis and wine taste great and less filling too :thumb:

Bummer for those of us who don't drink hard liquor drinks and get headaches from wine. Even without the beer, the room will sound great :thumb:

A shorter list would be what beer isn't available in Denver.  But if you want very good local you have Left Hand, Osker Blues, Avery and quite a few more.
