FS: Fanless Audio Computer!
« on: 3 Jun 2012, 10:52 pm »
Hey Guys

I'm getting out of the audio game for a while (see other ads) and I am selling my audio PC. It is super tiny at only 8.5" x 7.5" x 2.5". It runs the latest Intel motherboard / processor - the DN2800MT which has great internal hidef graphics (and all the other bells and whistles) and is completely passively cooled.

Some other highlights:

-Super tiny M350 enclosure
-4gb of RAM
-40gb OWC SSD
-Firewire PCIe card
-EXTERNAL 12v power supply! I am shipping this with the stock switch-mode ps but there are lots of ways to exand here....hmmm, a nice linear or battery ps would be VERY interesting!

I used this VERY SHORTLY but with GREAT SUCCESS with my Mytek DSD DAC (also for sale). Its just time for me to devote time to other things right now.

Just install your own os (I used Win 7 x32 and x64 to great success) and you are off to the races.

Thanks for looking and please shoot me a note with any questions.  $300 OBO.

-Jim

Seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Shame I bought something similar about two months ago.   :duh:

Good luck on the sale.

I wonder if I could install OSX on this and use the FW.

Good question.  Not sure where the hackintosh community is with this hardware.  Would be interesting, though.

I had used Pure Music for a while, but switched to jriver.  Its just so much better from my standpoint, specifically the user-friendliness.  Additionally, the jriver team (seems anyway) to be MUCH larger than the guy(s) at Pure Music and they crank out updates REALLY frequently.

Do you mind sharing which motherboard you used?

Could a SoTM USB PCI card fit inside this?

It has a PCIe connector (that's how the firewire card is connected) so one would need to use the new SOtM tX-USBexp.

This is a great, point, though.  Drop in this SOtM card and this thing transforms into a CAPS v2 beater!  The only reason I didn't pursue that route is:

a) I was using the Mytek DAC via firewire.
b) The new PCIe SOtM board wasn't (isn't - not sure what the status is) available, yet.

Hi Jim,

Does this unit have USB and Wifi on the motherboard too?

Thanks,
Gary

Gary, USB, yes (4 ports on the back), wifi, no.  For audio, I HIGHLY recommend running ethernet cabling if you can.  Wired connections are much better than wireless in most (all?) regards.

It is a great combo!!  I'll cut you (or anyone else) a deal on the two, if bought together.

Jim,

Wow, I'd be all over this as a server for my SB Touch, but we're in the midst of buying a new house, going to carry two mortgages for a while, and I'm on a spending moratorium at least until another large deal happens and I have chas in hand.

That's a very good deal, considering I paid as much just for a fanless case.

Thanks guys!  Buy the combo (this computer and the Mytek DAC) and I'll throw in a Granite Digital firewire cable for connecting the two.  This is one of the "preferred" firewire cables as identified on computeraudiophile.com

Would you mind listing the model numbers of the other components?

- OCW SSD
- Memory

Is the firewire card installed in the top photo?

Do you also have the original backplate (I/O shield) without the card slot?

Sure thing.

-OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD 40GB
-Kingston KVR1333D3S9/4G

The firewire card is installed in all the photos and what's installed is the only i/o shield I have.  If or if you don't plan to use the PCIe slot, it works well.

So tempting to experiment with this as a Hackintosh.   :duh:

Either way it sounds like someone will get a really really good option for a reasonable amount of dough.   :thumb:
