Title: Finally Bit The Bullet
Post by: SteveFord on 17 Feb 2021, 04:48 pm
I've been using MMGs up in the air (on hinges) with a CC5 center channel for television and background listening.
The MMGs just sound terrible compared to the CC5 center channel SO in around 14-16 weeks a set of LRS' will be on their way to me.

I'm probably going to wind up doing a monster upgrade of everything else as the old Carver preamp, ancient Bryston and Crown class D amp will probably not be up to snuff.  You know how speakers can show up shortcomings so...

That should keep me off the streets if nothing else.

I was thinking a used pair of 1.7s but I don't think they'd work out too well in the limited space I have to work with.

Congrats!  Keep us posted on the upgrades.

Are you going to mount the LRS's on the wall again or?

Congrats Steve!

Sounds like you may be coming down with a case of 'upgradeitus'. From what I know the 'cure' can be rather expensive.

I don't know yet but they will need to come up off the floor by quite a bit to clear furniture.
This old stereo stuff needed to be replaced and I haven't bought any stereo gear in years.

I've had those MMGs since sometime in the mid 1990s so I got my money's worth out of them.

Still waiting but I bought an older AVA preamp which has been modified (not by AVA) with a remote control so I don't have to strain my blubber by actually moving.
Getting there, slow but sure.

Coming my way is an Adcom GFA-5400 which will, most likely, be replacing a Bryston 3B.
A "new" Oppo is up next, just waiting to hear on shipping.
Progress is being made!

For your enjoyment, here is a picture of a black metal box.

Oppo BDP-103 ordered, now it's just wait for all of the junk to show up and I'll post a review.

This will be for background music, the boob tube and the occasional video disc.
The main system is 3.7 based, the secondary one is 1.7 based and with those I listen to vinyl.
I have just never been crazy about digital.

I would love to go back to 20.7s but the house is too small for those bruisers.
Maybe someday I'll pack up and move into a giant box above a giant garage, that would be okay with me.

Cool that is what I thought. Some day I will get to Soundlabs in a larger room. I like my vinyl and digital. The right digital gear might just change your mind. Did for me. Still shaking my head.

Road Trip!
These two passive subs will go with the 3.7s, the big SVS box will go with the LRS.

You guys were right, this idea is a money pit.

Those bring back fond memories of my old SVS cylinder sub (16-46PC+).  :thumb:

I love these old things.
What the hell, the speakers are weird looking, might as well get some fuzzy hot water heaters to go with them.

You had the next step up, that must have been a monster!

Cool!  Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.  Looks like you got a bad case of audiophilia upgraditis.  Are you running a fever?

Keep the posts coming.

Hey, I used to own one of those too!

Pretty much that whole TV system has got to go as it sounds terrible.
I have an upgraded Carver C1 preamp in there and maybe that's taking a dump.
I put in a CD and it was what the hell?  This is awful!

The guy I got these old SVS subs had a funny story: he bought them used from the town that I live in about 10 years ago SO back home they come.  I guess it was one of those meant to be things.

I always thought the Magnepan 3.7s needed a little more "oomph" (to use an audiophile buzzword) and they are NEVER going to make a smaller 20.7 so two SVS subs might do the trick.  Flesh out the bottom end and make sultry vocals more palpable and give it that effervesance only found in Schweppervesance, that kind of stuff.

More fun and games await.

Black boxes are showing up (Oppo, AVA), Hafler tomorrow, Rolls maybe Monday but no ETA on the speakers as of yet.
Magnepan must be slammed with orders.

It's up and running (more or less) but I went a bit larger on the speakers and currently have a very strange looking living room.
I mean a REALLY strange looking living room!
It's the kind of thing that probably wouldn't go unnoticed.
Sounds good, though.

Need to get a little sunlight in this room or else it'll be like a Rorschach test.

By overwhelming demand, here you go.  Pardon the mess, this is still undergoing reorganization.
1.7s, Adcom GFA 5400, CC3 and unused CCW speakers

Sherwood tuner, AVA Avastar preamp, APC surge protector, Oppo BDP-103, Bryston 3B Pro (used to power CC3)

Sub with dead plate amp awaiting surgery
I think Boris The Spider at really high volume was the final nail in the coffin for this plate amp, ha, ha.

Finally, this photo shows the reason why I went ahead and put myself back in the LRS queue.
This living room is pretty packed with 3.7s to the right of these 1.7s!
I've got an idea for the downstairs master bedroom which involves these 1.7s and some tube gear which I think might work out okay.
This sounds really good but just too much crap for one room so smaller ones will be welcome.

That looks pretty good but agree the room is really full.  So LRS's are still in the works?  Your pics also give me better perspective the size of the 1.7's, 65 inches tall is just 6 inches shorter then my 3.6r's, thanks.

Yes, I'll stick LRS in there for the TV system and will probably stick them on hinges like the MMGs currently are.  That way they're up around ear level and are out of the way.  It won't be the last word in sound reproduction but that's okay.

In the meantime I'll use the 1.7s as it'll take me a bit to get the other room set up.  I think the 1.7s will be perfect in there if I scoot them right up against the walls.
1.7s are a bit shorter and 4" narrower compared to 3.7s.

Just too much junk cluttering up one room, it looks like a surplus stereo gear store right now.  There's a LOT more stuff cropped out of the photos.

I snagged a Dayton Audio 500W sub amp on ebay, drilled a hole in the dead plate amp, stuck in a grommet, wired up the stand alone amp and the old girl is back in bidness!
Throw some junk in front of the stand alone amp and I'm good to go.

Nice bit of "McGuyvering" on the sub!

The things a man can do with a cordless drill...

Once the plate amp was off it was a surprise to see just how skinny the wiring is they used for the speaker.
It reminded me of this one fellow saying people spend incredible amounts of money on interconnects and speaker wire and power cords but they should take a look at what's inside of their speakers.

Plugged a subwoofer amp into an APC power conditioner unit and it caused a steady ticking sound to come out of the sub.
Plugged it straight into the wall and problem solved.  Why, I have no idea but I'm glad it's gone.

Update: eBay amp went back as it was screwing up after all, did what I should have done and ordered a new one from Parts-Express and I'm back in business.
