john madden was a winner, a brilliant coach

perhaps more importantly he was a great man, great sense of humor, ability to connect with and entertain people, but always with class, never putting himself above others

he brought me many many smiles as coach, announcer, radio personality...

Yes, he was great.
Football just wasn't the same after he retired.

He was an "everyman" kind of commentator. Despite his vast knowledge of the workings of American football, his mannerisms and way of speaking were very "regular guy." I always found his refusal to fly interesting. Buses and trains only for him. I bet his schedulers had nightmares.

I believe it was Rupert Murdoch who said if he wanted to introduce a stranger to someone who was "typically American" he'd introduce him to John Madden.
