Do you pull the quads away from the back wall for listening?

No, that was a very small room. In another home, I did have them placed about three feet from the rear walls and mounted on Arcici stands. They definitely benefited from having more 'breathing room.'

Well Tempered square motor, too.
You have good taste in stereo gear!

Thanks!

That's a great turntable, and it was also my daily driver for over 20 years. I recently sold it to a friend who is still enjoying it.

Dear Reader,

Here's my Magnepan home theater/music system.

I'm temporarily using a pair of KEF LS-50 wireless for the rear channels until my .7s return from the factory.

I run MMG-W wall speakers for surrounds and a CC5 center.

Does anyone have experience with the CCR center vs the CC5? Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you.

I do not but I'm told it's a significant step up.

Rappaport! That's a name I haven't heard in decades! I think the last time I saw it in print was in The Audio Critic.

Been a while since I posted in this thread.

I've since parked the Martin Logan SL3's for a while, and went back to my true love, Magnepan's! A new pair of 1.7i's with a new pair of SVS PB 1000 Pro subs and a new Quad Artera Pre preamp. Almost forgot how much I love the Maggie sound.

Oh, and we also purchased a house since the last post here. The listening room is much larger than the room in the last house that we were renting.

Thank you. It's nice to have some Maggies again. My first pair were some MGLR-1 all the way back in 1997! Had them only a couple years and sold them for some dumb reason. Been hunting for that Maggie sound ever since in every brand speaker other than Magnepan. Never found it. Go figure. LOL

I'm not selling these 1.7i's, that's for sure.

I got my first Maggies in the early 1980s (a pair of SMG).  After a few years I sold them and got a pair of ADS L1290 (wanted better base response).  It was difficult finding anything that didn’t sound like a box compared to the Maggies.  The ADS were the rare exception and I enjoyed them for decades.

Fast forward to 2019, I noticed all the positive experiences with the then new LRS.  Having always remembered Maggies fondly, I decided to give them a try (at $650 with a 60 day return window, not much to lose).  Also, now that  I had a great sub, so bass extension wasn’t an issue.  Needless to say, the LRS did not disappoint!  :thumb:

i thought some might be interested in seeing two early generations of my planar systems.

circa 2009, a pair of emerald physics cs1.3's + funk audio subs w/ modwright and ampzilla amplification and a prism orpheus preamp/dac.

circa 2000, a pair of apogee divas, krell fpb 600, and krell cd player/preamp.

Here are some of my 90’s era panel speakers ready for rotation into my system. The monster electrostats on the left are Acoustat Spectra 66’s. The small Apogees in the background are Mini Grands. I run these as Stages without the built in subs. Preferring a Rythmik servo sub instead. The lovely shiny planars are, of course, the infamous Apogee Scintillas. If you are on this forum, you know the story. These have been completely reconditioned with new ribbons, caps, aligned magnets, and glossy paint by TSW in Nevada. I love having all these vintage speaker choices!

Here are my "skinny" Sound Lab Majestic 745s

I inserted AV Roomservice EVPs under the panels, and the bass got even better.  (Not sure how to rotate the image 90º?)

Picked up this super mint, fully restored Pioneer RT-1020L from my father over the weekend. This is one of the many reasons why I decided to purchase the Quad Artera preamp as it has what they call an RCA "AUX" preamp output, which completely bypass the volume, so it gets full signal from all of the inputs, including the balanced input. Pretty much like a "tape loop" on old preamps and receivers from back in the day. I have a couple of Ampex 456 tapes, though I have no idea what's on them if anything. Guess I'll find out in the next couple of days or coming weekend.

Soon will come another Pangea rack for a couple cassette decks, dbx goodies and turntable, as well as the hunt beginning for some RTR tapes. Also have to get some new interconnects as the Wireworld Oasis ones I have, the machined ends on them are too thick to fit comfortably in the jacks on the Pioneer. Those jacks are just placed slightly too close together.

Anywho, on with some pics...

Wow Chops,

That 10" Pioneer tape machine looks great and it sure brings back memories for me.  For many years I used a Pioneer RT909, which was also a fantastic machine.

If you can get hold of a DBX 224 tape noise reduction unit to pair up with that tape machine, you will really have something special.  The noise reduction is merely a desirable by-product of the DBX224-- the real advantage is that it doubles the energy/dynamic range that can be stored on the tape.  Basically; it compresses the dynamic range by 2:1 before recording it on the tape, and then at playback it expands it by 1:2.  Along with the playback expansion, the tape noise reduces to inaudible levels.
