Yeah yeah, Years ago I bought a $200 pair of III's... Then later one.. a new pair of 3.6 then eight years later 2018 a new pair of 20.7s.
So (unless the op here is like 95 years old.. So the last pair of speakers...) I would say the 1.7s may be a  good introduction.

LMAO.  Maybe I should say, I won't purchase box speakers ever again.

The first time I heard Magnepan was when I was given  a pair of Magnepan mg3a from my father in law ( he wanted nothing to do with them and got them from a friend or something).Eventually my two year old son pushed one over and it popped like a balloon. I knew I didnt want box speakers and it gave me a great excuse to buy a  pair or Spatial M3 Turbo S.  Different from Magnepan , but similar. Once I heard those I will never go back to box speakers. .............................My opinion of course

Maggies are nice but require a lot of power, which can get expensive if you also want a quality signal.  I owned a pair of 1.7s but felt my amp affordability quotient was preventing me from hearing the best possible sound.  My Spatial Audio X5s are being driven to loud levels by a 1.5 watt tube amp.  I do agree that for me open baffle is the way to go.

VG speakers no doubt. However you need to hear more speakers. It never ends. Try Spatial, GTA, Apogee, Muir. In the mean time enjoy your first Maggie experience. They do seem to grab ya at first.

Luckily high power, high quality watts are available to drive Maggies now.  I'd strongly recommend checking out the Digital Audio Company's line of Maraschino amps.  Those amps are perfectly suited to drive a tough load like this and still sound great.

If it were me, I'd get one of those amps & be happy for a very long time.

I think the 3.7i are the best value in their line.

Actually ¨magges¨ are not so very power hungry, rather they do require properly behaved power supplies.  Think of them as current sink transducers.
For 20+ years I ran the T-1D's  with Quicksilver 8417 60w mono-blocks with exquisite results.
However, the T-1D's were the mid-range with all four T-1B bass panels driven by Quatre DG250C and of course my Sequerra T-2 tweeters singing above on a M. Levinson ML-9.
My point is that the 60 watt Quicksilver 8417 never sounded less that Mesmerising, perfectly blended, stunning inner voice detail. An opera lovers dream!!!  Of course when an output tube finally plated out .... well equally stunning silence. ;-) BUT as all here aver, very careful attention to the synergetics between system components or the lack thereof, will quickly make its self known through ¨maggies¨.

Hello, I was fortunate enough to hear their LRS speakers @ Axpona last year and was completely blown away.  Best value at the show for around $700.00!

Best regards!

I’ve heard Maggie’s being powered with a Pass Labs XA30.8 amp and it left me wanting for nothing more.

Best regards!

Wait till you get lost in a listening session, realize 6 hours have gone by and you don't want to stop to go to bed.  I just upgraded to Qobuz and my 1.7's have never sounded better.  Put a good tube pre-amp in front of some decent A/B power  and you will never let them go.  I run mine off a loaded Odyssey I picked up used at a steal and they are made for each other.

What were you using before you acquired these?

I also have a glass full of Magnepan Kool-Aid I'm working on

As posted in the Planar Porn thread:

I think I'm doing OK with the Pass Labs x350.5 but also have a Mivera 1200AS2 amp to try as well as a pair of VAC PA-160 monoblocks.  Fun, fun, and more fun!

They did not replace but augment my speaker collection.  my other main speakers are a pair of PMC EB-1i that I will not sell until I can't hear anymore.
