Solid State Amplifier to drive Lii Audio F15
« on: 9 Aug 2023, 03:37 pm »
Currently built an open baffle with an F15 on top and a W15 on bottom. W15 is being driven by a Crown XLS1002. That pairing is great but the F15 needs a little more juice than my Sayes 46 amp can offer. Is anyone having luck with solid state gear?

My First Watt F3 works well with my F15 OB drivers and sounds wonderful with only 18 W/ch.

First Watt has been on my list. I had an M2 and it was fantastic should have kept it I guess.

Thanks! I am pretty happy with how they came out. Not bad for a first project

Aside the expensive First Watts there is various English Fet Class AB amps as Rotel, Naim, Roksan etc but I prefer the integrated Rega Brio used or a small Class D for transparency and no heat.

Also worth mention the true audiophile DIY Class A Mofo 20W monoblock, which our member Poseidon Voice can assemble one for you.

Look at what Van Alstine has to offer.  Very happy with how my Spatials sound when driven by their SET 120 amp.

The Pass ACA mini sounds great with the F15.

The Volt+D is very affordable and sounds better than many more expensive amps. It's what I currently use to power my F-15/Lowther OB's.

Another excellent sounding amp is the Aiyima A07 and like the Volt+D it also measures very well at Audio Science Review. For comparison some of the other amps recommended here have had measurements there. From my experience the A07 has gobs of headroom powering the F-15's. According to this video an easy switch to a better op-amp will take the A07 to an even higher level. I plan to try that with mine.

Fleawatt does custom amps based on the great sounding TPA class D's. Here is a well modded AO7.

This is the exact one I own. I use it on a second system. Sounds decent for the money. It's on the same sonic and price level as the Mini GaN5 which I owned previously. The Ayima looks better, uses higher-quality parts, and has volume control.

I have a pair of F15s that I'm currently breaking in while I wait for my Caintuck baffles. Currently the only amp I have is a Boxem audio Arthur which is class D Purifi based. Way more power then they need but I have the amp to drive my power sucking KEF LS50 Metas. So far they sound great and very relaxed with the extra power. Time will tell since they only have about 20hrs but so far so good with solid state. Once they fully break in I'll be looking at other amplifier options.

IMO this Arthur Mono or Stereo seems perfect to drive the F15 or F18.

Yes the Boxem is a very fast, clean, and neutral amp. It also does not soften any poor recordings and is not a warm tube based sound if that's what you are looking for. The good thing is so far, the F15s sound like the performers are actually in the room. They pull that off better than my KEFs. That is just with them sitting on the floor on a soft towel so they will only get better with this amp combo.

Has anyone tried using a Crown XLS1002 to drive the full range driver. How does it sound?

My First Watt SIT 3 sounds fabulous driving my F15's (18W/ch @ 8ohms), and so do my Marantz MA-5's in either Class A (30W each) or Class B (120 W each). It's nice to have a ton of extra amplifier headroom, even if you never need it.

At under $500 hard to beat the Cambridge Audio Axa35 35W, Class AB, phono stage + remote, better sound quality than PMA600 and NAD 3020. Seems just 1 power transistor per channel.
