Woodworking Q: Half-blind joints
« on: 24 Feb 2008, 10:48 pm »
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a half-blind rabbet dovetail joint and a half-blind flush dovetail joints?  I am attempting to do a half-blind joint on some scrap but my jig gives me the choice between flush and rabbet.  I don't know what those are. I tried google but didn't find anything that made it clearer.  Rabbet fingers are deeper than the flush but that doesn't seem to illuminate anything for me based on the geometry I can picture.

All the dovetail joint online tutorials that I see have pictures that are far too damn small to see what they are doing.  What is the point in that?  Anyway, if you could help me figure this out, I'd appreciate it.

I am trying to be all cool with my Aikido chassis but the jig isn't obvious (only partly so) and because I bought it off ebay I got no directions.

Thanks...I understand what half-blind is, just not the rabbet vs flush part.

JoshK,

Here is the link http://www.americanwoodworker.com/aspx/ContentDetail.aspx?ContentId=1143&PageNo=3

These pictures can differentiate between the rabbet and flush based on your questions

I missed the 3/8" rabbet part of the picture in the second one.

Josh

Check out the Leigh Jig website for video tutorials.  Your jig might be different but the mechanics are basically the same.
