Title: CDs with excellent sound
Post by: sszorin on 29 Dec 2014, 09:00 am
There's so many - below is a few (and I don't necessarily think that every single cut is well recorded)

Joan Baez – ‘Baez Sings Dylan’
Patricia Barber’s hybrid SACDs on Mobile Fidelity
Cristina Branco – ‘Ulisses’
Jim Brock – ‘Troppic Affair’
Jonatha Brooke – ‘Live’
Jackson Brown – ‘Solo Acoustic Volume 1’
Rosanne Cash – ’10 Song Demo’
Rosanne Cash – ‘The List’
Rosanne Cash – ‘Rules of Travel’
Kasey Chambers – ‘Barricades and Brickwalls’
David Chesky – ‘Club De Sol’
Nat King Cole – Analogue Productions hybrid SACDs
Jamie Cullum – ‘Twentysomething’
Jamie Cullum – ‘The Pursuit’
Al DiMeola – ‘Kiss My Axe’ (2nd cut is something I like to use for demo)
David Elias – ‘The Window’  hybrid SACD
Duke Elington – ‘Digital Duke’
Arthur Fiedler + Boston Symph – ‘George Gershwin’
Patty Griffin – ‘1000 Kisses’
George Harrison – ‘The Early Takes Volume 1’
Michael Jackson – ‘Thriller’
Eilen Jewell – ‘Queen of the Minor Key’
Elton John – ‘Elton John’ hybrid SACD
Keb Mo – ‘Keb Mo’ Mobile Fidelity hybrid SACD
Diana Krall – ‘The Girl in the Other Room’
Alison Krauss – ‘New Favorite’
Aimee Mann – ‘Lost in Space’ Mobile Fidelity hybrid SACD
Keiko Matsui – ‘Moyo’
Sara Mclachlan – ‘Surfacing’
Glenn Miller Orchestra – ‘In the Digital Mood’
Joni Mitchell – ‘Shine’
O-Zone Percussion Group – ‘La Bamba’
Fionn Regan – ‘The End of History’
Sara K – ‘Made in the Shade’
Cat Stevens – ‘Tea for the Tillerman’  Analogue Productions hybrid SACD
Vandaveer – ‘Divide and Conquer’ – like this cut - http://vimeo.com/4237641
Jennifer Warnes – ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’
Jennifer Warnes – ‘The Well’ hybrid SACD
I have these CDs and they are so well mastered that it is worth getting them just for their sound quality which is excellent. An added bonus is that not only the sound but the music is great too.

I just picked up Neil Diamond/Gold, Original recording remastered. Label is Universal, release date 2005.
If you are a Neil Diamond fan many of his top 40 hits are here,41 to be precise, most cuts are good to very good, some are outstanding. The Original vinyl is probably better but I won't be trying to find it.

With the right equipment, a large majority of available Redbook (and dare I say MP3) formatted music offers excellent sound ("excellent being in the ears of the beholder).  Of course nothing is going to help some of those early CD's.

NOS DACs and Chord/Chordette DACs are noted for bringing Redbook much closer to high resolution format sound quality.

And of course the right speakers (as always coupled to synergistic amplification) that don't have a overly dry/analytical presentation can make  beautiful music out of less than ideal recordings.  Note that nowadays the trend is towards the very detailed/lean sound than highlights poor recordings that leads to listener fatigue.

Robbie Robertson - Robbie Robertson

It's a very quiet CD (dynamic though), you have to crank it, but it's something else. I mean it makes some things mentioned here look like amateur hour for recording and mastering.

Seriously go buy it. It's my new favorite atm. It's sooo good!!!!

It gives me a good feeling to see one of my recordings on fishinbob's long list (International Guitar Night II). It's nice to be noticed!

I will second that. I sold a system to the Tyson Corp. back in the 80's and the Tyson's were a big friend of Robbie. On one of the walls in their lakehouse hung one of Robbie's gold records award. This CD sounded unbelievable on that system, Mark Levinson, Duntech Sovereigns. It was the closest to live music that I ever heard. The low bass on that CD is incredible. And crank it LOUD!

So far -I've been really impressed by Columbia legacy recordings -some have been older Jazz recordings - but even the newer stuff in the Legacy series have been a pleasure.
