Try waxing it. A gloss clear cote may do the trick also.

I was thinking waxing... And 're-waxing when necessary, but since there will be frequent touching...it may be better to be clear coated or something.  That's what the everbrite is. Just afraid to get it on unevenly.

Gloss Clear Spray lacquer should do fine, and stick really well.

Is it easy to apply?

Just be damn sure the copper is clean with alcohol before you do this.

Everbrite may be a good solution also, but I have no idea how to apply it.

Yes, coat it with something more permanent that wax.  Nothing wrong with wax, but as you have stated, it is going to be handled a lot.
Do not try to do this in one coat.  If you want that highly polished bare look, then several light coats are much better to give it that glassy smooth finish.
Most people want it done right now and spray the coat to heavy causing sags or runs.  The protection is still there but it may not be the smooth finish you would have been hoping for.

And I think some alcohols may have emollients, especially since they can be used on cotton balls to apply to the skin, so be careful regarding ingredients!

If you want to do the job right, use a quality spray gun and compressor to shoot your lacquer.

I'm sure you know a fella that works at a auto-body shop that could use a few bucks on the side.

Just be damn sure the copper is clean with alcohol before you do this.

From Everbright's website: "Use Everbrite to protect architectural copper and most copper unless it gets a lot of handling or use".

It then says: "Use ProtectaClear for copper that gets a lot of use: Sinks, Counters, Hand railings and Jewelry".

So, Everbright would not be the correct product to use, Protectaclear would be........

Gloss Clear Spray lacquer should do fine, and stick really well.

This is what I used for a dozen 1 lb brass plumb bobs I got from Harbor Freight years ago and they still look like new. It's easy to get a nice gloss finish with spray can laquer ime.

If you are going to clean the weight with alcohol be sure to use 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean any oils off of it before painting.
The 91% concentration of alcohol is as pure as you can get over the counter. You must also keep it tightly capped as it will pull water right out of the atmosphere and become more diluted as well as disappearing.

Transpárent varnish or anodizing.

While I agree that anodized is probably best, but a little more expensive I would think.   I was looking for something affordable and perhaps I can do myself.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I will try the everbrite protectaclear and see where it leads me.
