Home audio power requirements for normal loud listening levels rarely requires more than 100 watts (20 db), sure, if you want to "show off" you'll need more power but outside of a few demo sessions, all that power sits unused.
I would rather have a high quality amp of around 50 or 100 watts or less for serious listening and keep a pro class D switching amp (cheap) of super high power for "party sessions", or one of those used solid state early 80's monsters that the audiophile press really hated. In the demo sessions of the audio club I'm in, I don't think I've ever heard anything above 95db.
