New to all this...
« on: 26 Feb 2020, 05:25 pm »
Hi everyone,

I'm David and I'm totally new to audio. Yesterday, after having read a number of forum posts about DIY this and that, I bought an old Zenith console stereo off Craigslist. The console has two 12-inch 49cz861 speakers and two tweeters. I was thinking about reusing the 12-inch speakers, possibly for an open-baffle DIY speaker. It's sort of a pity to break down a pretty old stereo like that one, but I'm not sure what else I would do with it. To be honest, I haven't heard many open-baffle speakers, but I wanted to try something relatively easy and inexpensive, such as a Pure Audio Project clone with low-cost drivers and passive crossovers.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!

I'll post again as I make progress...

And I hear you about the dwindling number of people interested in quality sound. It's just the nature of the times. And I'm probably on the young end of most who care about sound quality (48)

I read that same article! That's what inspired the purchase of the console. It sounds like all the 49czxxx drivers are similar. It sounds alright in the console, which is basically an open-baffle design.

Here you go. It's amazing that it still works (mostly) after 60 years.

Thanks bro for the photos, seems they are in great shape.
Looks they use a different house for the Alnico magnet.
Do you can confirm the magnet are Alnico or Ferrite?

From what I understand they are alinco with a closed-magnet type. But I'm just getting that from the internet - I'm not sure how to tell by looking at the drivers.
