Family room speaker suggestions
« on: 17 Nov 2009, 12:12 am »
As many of you know I have a good main 2 channel, 5.1 multichannel music and 7.1 movie setup...all relegated to a dedicated man cave.   :D

In the family room, however, I've had my 37 year old KLH Model 10 bookshelves (yes, my college dorm speakers!) sitting on my fireplace hearth and playing mostly background or midfi music.  Well, they are finally biting the dust, and this gives me a chance to upgrade the sound in there to something that will clearly still be a "Second system" but might have a modicum of imaging and soundstage.  I'm also not against hiding a sub somewhere in the room.

My caveats:
* fireplace hearth placement, meaning they likely need to be front ported, since they will be on a surface that is only 15" deep off the back of the fireplace facing.
* I want to spend less than $1k, hopefully way less if I find something used on Audiogon
* It would be great if they are a natural cherry or medium oak type wood color, but this is not a show stopper.
* Sweetspot (center of sofa when in "fall/winter fireplace setup") is about 8-9 ft away, so basically a nearfield experience.

I'm open to new, used, whatever.  My front port assumption might be wrong, but likely not.  They'll have plenty of side wall clearance just no front wall clearance (hearth is 12" high, 15" deep).

So far I have one recommendation: David (Rydenfan) says his buddy has the newer B&W 685's and loves them as a second setup.  David heard them and was quite impressed with their value.  They come in around $650/pair.

Thanks in advance for any model or manufacturer leads.

linn keilidh.  i heard these floorstanders a few years back; quite nice, designed to go ~4"-12" from back wall.  at 10.8" deep, they would yust fit on your fireplace hearth.

these are not the color you want, but at this price - for "aktiv", which means built-in amplification - these are a great deal, imo.  amazing they haven't sold yet - mebbe cuz the seller has no feedback?:

or, mebbe they need the cards/amps the seller is selling here? :

even if yust speakers only, these keilidh's are a nice solution to what you are wanting, imo, at a decent price...  and, since they've been on agon for a month, the seller might be willing to deal a bit...

Thanks but they are too big for the application, and require $1500-1600 total.  The amps are no good without the speakers, and vice versa.

The Von Schweikert VR-1s are not a bass reflex design, but use a teeny weeny little transmission line.  The transmission line exits on the back of the cabinet, but when I had these I never had any problem using them in a bookshelf arrangement.

There are two pairs currently listed for sale on Audiogon:

The african hazelwood finish for $550, used: http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1263505331&/Von-Schweikert-VR-1---Hazlewoo

The dark cherry finish, for $475, used: http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1263497509&/Von-Schweikert-VR-1-

I think I saw a pair of ACI Sapphire II's here a little while ago.  Not a lot of room, great imaging, good tonal balance, etc. if you can live without 40Hz down.

Edit:  Here's the link:

sorry, at 10.8" deep, i thought they would work.  and, no, you do not need the amps for them; they work yust fine as normal passive speakers.

also, the linn tukan's (smaller bookshelves), are also designed for near-wall placement...

Mark,
So you don't think the MA's rear-ported design will bite me in my setup/application?

They can be plugged, but in all honesty with the limited bass from the RS-1's I don't see it as a problem.

If you didn't like them, I'd buy them from you and put them in the apartment in Memphis.
