If I may digress...

On my radar - to construct the Linkwitz Pluto, but that depends on other things..
On my radar to buy - Dynaudio Air 25. Simply bloody awesome. Looks as bad as much as how well it sounds.
On my radar to hear - when I get to the US next year... Barefoot MM35 and K&H 0300s.

In my experience, the bang for the buck, across all the music I listen to, can't be beat with actives. I still have my Quad 57s, so I am not wedded to one philosophy over the other, and there's no reason not to enjoy each speaker for the strengths they offer.

re Mackie HR-824 -listened to them and felt precisely as batmanslc2 did.

Active all the way. I have a set of RM40s with the crossovers ripped out. Using 3 stereo amps via DCX. 2 5 watt DIY amps and one 400-600 watt pro amp. I will never go back to passive. I think there are systems out there that sound good passive, but I invariably hear the crossover and lack of detail among many other things I don't like.

...a really full full-ranger would be ideal but that is a very hard, say impossible, driver to design...so the second best option, which is available, but costly, is active...once you've gone down that road, if properly done, its very very hard to go back to passive ( though passive systems with great drivers and shallow slopes do have their charms )...

JBL LE-15B woofers are in storage. All other components in the L-200s are simply bypassed while remaining in their original positions. System was set-up and calibrated by David Wall of Snob Productions.

Total investment including interconnects and speaker wire, in short, everything but sources, came to approximately $8000.

This is a world-class active system that is well within the reach of most of you from a financial standpoint and easily within the skill limits of nearly everyone as evidenced by the fact that I did it.

The only limitation any of you might experience is space. In my experience, you need a good 12 feet between you and the speakers and 15 to 18 feet would be better. If you have 1000 square feet or more, nothing could be better except changing to a bass horn. That requires a lot more floor space  and significantly more money, two things in short supply at my house.
