Best non ceiling speaker option for Atmos
« on: 27 Aug 2020, 08:17 pm »
Hello all,

I have an anthem AVM60 and realistically installing ceiling speakers is not an option.  We have a completely finished basement and my wife will not take too kindly to me cutting holes and trying to run wires.

What are my best alternatives for Atmos speakers?

Thanks in advance.

Oh good, glad you said best and didn't mention anything about the price  :)

The Atmos speakers should be tonally the same as the surrounds, that way the sound profile is seamless as objects move around the room. There are plenty of modules available that sit on top an existing speaker. The Klipsch look like little screamers. If you ask 100 people you will get 100 opinions (if you go to AVS Forum you will get 110 opinions)

I am a fan of Triad speakers, you may not have heard of them but home theater speakers is all they do. Triad is sold through a professional dealer/installer network. I have 2 Triad OnWall Bronze Surrounds and 4 Triad InWall Bronze/4 Surrounds as my in-ceiling Atmos speakers. They work very well with my Anthem AVM 60. The speakers never call attention to themselves even though the living room is filled with sound so your attention is always on the action on the screen.

Triad has a balanced sound, the opposite of Klipsch. I stayed with the Anthem ARC Genesis curves which you can easily tweak to make a custom profile based on your room and hearing preferences.

The Triad InRoom Bronze or Silver LR-H would work out perfectly in your situation. The speakers have a clean classy look, you can start with 4 and 6 would make a totally awesome sounding room.
Triad speakers are made in the USA using top quality drivers, all levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) are top quality, the only difference is the recommended room size.

An in-depth review of the Triad Bronze LR-H, price is $1000 each.

Triad only sells through a dealer network, I located a dealer that sells Triad speakers at 10% off, no tax and free shipping:

Many Triad speakers are available on eBay too.

Trinnov and Triad speakers had a demo at CEDIA 2019 in a free standing room, from watching the the videos there seems to be very little to no sound leakage. All the Triad speakers are hidden but which models used are not specified, they may be Triad's Inwall speakers.

Thanks for the detailed response.

I should have mentioned I use Paradigm Prestige 95f and 55c, and premier 800f, and x12 as my main speakers.  Will these triads mix with them?  I assume the processor handles what signals they get so they should work.

I would consider a pair of Paradigm bookshelf speakers placed on their backs.

I haven't heard the latest Paradigm speakers. Based on the Stereophile review the Triad speakers don't have the rising high end response typical of Paradigm. The Anthem will compensate and try to even everything out.

Regarding putting bookshelves on their backs, it sounds fugly to me. Up firing Atmos are supposed to keep a tight sound focus up to the ceiling, beaming the sound so after the bounce you hear the sound coming from above. Bookshelf speakers might have wide dispersion, just the opposite. Sure they would work but I doubt you would get a good bounce, just a big sound bubble.
