Art Deco Super V's (very pix heavy)
« on: 11 Jun 2012, 12:43 am »
Hey Guys, been pretty busy around the shop lately and Ive been working on these a pretty good while for a guy in Baltimore MD. He wanted a pair of V's like no others and I like to kinda pride myself on being able to produce one off's and like I said these took a good while to build but alot of labor went into these and first off Id never seen a almost 100% fully veneered pair of V's which is what we have here. The whole build is either solid or veneered, the only thing that is painted is the crossover cover.

The build consist's of 3 different Veneers. Mappa Burl, Black Limba and Smoked eucalyptas. The solid is the out-riggers which is made of Mahogany which I ebonized to get a darker color.

The crossover network was built by Sean (skiing ninja) which I hate I dont have a pix of it but trust me it is a work of art !

Once everything was complete and ready to wire, Jason (jtrace) was kind enough to come by the shop and help me get all of the wire chased and hooked up to get me out the door faster and get them on their way to Baltimore so Id like to give him a large shout out ! Thanks Jason  :thumb:

So Like I said its pix heavy so sit back , relax and take a look. To me , they have a "Art Deco" feel w/ a little oriental feel which to me comes from the style of the out -riggers. Let me know what you think, good or bad no hurt feelings here. R.K.

Very cool, Randall. I've often thought about moving a pair of V's outside the box, (there's a pun in there somewhere), design wise and you've produced a great example. I particularly like the outrigger setup.
 Make sawdust, brother!

State of the Art! (Pun intended). Beautiful work as usual. I'll be visiting you soon, for of course, more and more projects. The subs you built me are electrifying  :thumb:

I know its a matter of taste, paint vs wood and so on. But those might be the nicest pair of V's i've seen to date and I usually prefer paint.

Excellent work Sir. :thumb:

Hey Randall!

Were you given complete creative control on these? You certainly saw something in the design that I would never have seen. I assume the dark plates are meant to stiffen the sub woofer cavity walls?

The outriggers are neat looking and I really like Mappa Burl. :thumb:

Outstanding craftsmanship and level of detail - you should really be proud!!   :thumb: :thumb:

In terms of the veneer and finish choices, it just isn't my cup of tea.

There is too much going on and it feels like more like abstract art pieces put together than a single, flowing speaker.

Looks awesome.  I would recommend spray painting the no-rez and the silver subwoofer driver magnet cup black, to cut down on the # of colors going on in the design.  Otherwise, outstanding!!!!

Should be a really good combo.  Which sub did you go for?  Paper or Aluminum cone?  12" or 15"?

instead of paint, i would install a grille w/fabric the same color as the dark ebony.  the grill could have tacks in the rear that would simply push into the no-rez...  otherwise, it looks wery nice...

these are in b'more, eh?  hmmm....  mebbe i'd get a chance to hear them...
