Ive got an older Macbook Pro 2009. Going to run a (mini-toslink out) of the Mac, into a better dac (toslink in).Has anyone done this to any degree if success? If I get the equivalent of rebook cd sound, Ill be happy for now. I know there are limitations, does Pure music take it up a notch?

I did it for a long time.  Worked fine, but I ended up getting a reclocker, which made it sound better.

I run a $74 Straightwire 3.0 meter USB cable from my 2012 MacBook Air at the listening chair and a $6 Monoprice 35 foot optical from my 2009 iMac to the same $5000 MSRP speakers/mono-blocks and they sound very similar.

I use a 20" Silflex/Lifatec Glass fiber TOSLINK-Miniplug from my late 2012 Mac mini dedicated server to DAC. No problems & it sounds great with my headphone system.

I run a 2010 Mac Mini toslink out to a Monarchy Audio Super DIP with a coax out to my DAC. I preferred it to both USB out to DAC as well as straight toslink to DAC.
Sounds a bit elaborate but with the Super DIP tucked behind the rack it's not an issue.
The question I have for you is, what format are your music files ripped to?
