Belkin CAT5 cable from Circuit City
« on: 18 Jan 2003, 08:07 pm »
I just bought some of this to see if it is a good substitute for Belden 1585A for internal wiring. The Belkin cable is fastcat 5e Premise cable #R7L604-BLU-CC, 4pair 24awg, E129760... I could not find specs in the www.belkin.com to find out if it is teflon. It feels smooth like Teflon with solid cooper core. It was only 25 cents a foot.

I will stop by Radio Shack and see if they still carry Belden 1585A... They had it listed on their website as RS part# 910-1603. But it says it is not available.

By the way, I was able to use my GB auto wire stripper to strip the outer casing and the individual 24 awg casing. I have read people trying different things including their teeth to strip this thin gauge.

while you're at RS pick up a wire stripper. You don't want to be using your teeth.
My suggestion on the CAT5 would be meci.com. I ended up with Teflon Cat5 (1701A) for $.08/ft

I heard that Belden 1585A is the one to get. Meci has a good price for that as well, 8 cents per foot, 100 foot minimum, MECI Part Number: 631-0101C.
I just wish it was easy/convenient to pick up a teflon shielded cat5 cable locally.

I do not plan to use my teeth. My GB tool works much better.

1701a is essentially the same stuff, but the pairs are bonded together. I think MECI sends out 1585 if you are buying in bulk reels, 1701 if you are buying less by the foot.
