Frank,

I read somewhere (Stereophile?) that you used a Squeezebox and laptop to feed an Ultra Dac.

How does it compare sonically with feeding the Ultra Dac directly from a CD player?

We used the Squeezebox at the Detroit show feeding it with uncompressed CDs stored on Jim's computer and on into an Ultra DAC and the rest of the AVA equipment driving the HT3s.  I could hear no difference from running the CDs directly from a CD transport.  Of course with compressed CD recording methods, the fidelity would suffer.

Thanks Frank!

I was hoping you'd say that, but hardly sure it would work that well.

I have always thought lossless encoding was the way to go,
but uncompressed might be better yet.  Certainly fewer delays in delivery.

Lossless compression sounds the same as uncompressed via the Squeeze Box.

There are tons of posts and threads on that topic here at AC if you care to read about it.

Zybar, get lost. You were just blasting Frank on another thread. Get off his site.

Not sure why suggesting that FLAC and WAV are indistinguishable is a bad thing, it is true.

Wayne, calm down, I have no arguement with lossless compression, as long as it really is lossless.

Zybar was not out of place with his comment here regarding that.

Yah, he was not happy with my coathangers, that's OK.  I would like to keep this circle a nice peaceful place as much as possible.

Regards,

Frank

I don't know diddley about all this talk about lossles compression and Flac and WAV. It's all computer geek talk to me. But I do know that my SB3 with digital mods by the bolder cable co.(Wayne) playing through an APL DAC beats the living crap out of any CD player I've ever owned or tried out.
But Hey!!! What do I know! Nothing. And I can prove it!!! So There!!

Way to go Charlie. I have the same opinion and just mod my SB3 and DAC with pulse transformers. They beat out my previous CD player and/or CD transport (Electrocompaniet SE, Acustic Art I transport+DAC) all the way. :icon_lol: :thumb:
