Title: What equipment have you built recently?
Post by: JoshK on 26 Feb 2009, 04:37 pm
Audio central has a thread on what equipment have you bought recently with folks posting pictures of their new toys.  How about for those of us who build rather than buy our gear?  Although, pictures of cool drivers and iron, tubes and other diy wares would be cool too.

This might be a nice thread to brag and show off your latest project.

So guys, what have you built lately?

Roy,

I submitted the review to Steven at Enjoy the Music for the March DIY section, I have no idea if he's going to publish it.

I'll ask the owner of the TP to post a comment but last time I talked to him he was happy with it. If the Transporter were mine I would likely have kept tinkering for another few months but I kept him waiting a long time as it was. :)

Edit: I just checked Enjoy the Music and Steven did post my Abbey review. :D http://www.enjoythemusic.com/diy/0309/gedlee_abbey.htm

A few months ago, I built the little Spud 6cl6 amp as listed on the Hawthorne Audio site.  I've recently replaced the small Edcor output transformers pictured below with some heavier ones from Transcendar.  Now the bass is as good as the highs, but I have to find a larger case to house everything.

This was an inexpensive and fun project for those wanting an easy intro into tube amps with point-to-point wiring.  And the chassis is pre-drilled and finished, you only need to add sides (unless you can't resist those bigger transformers).  :icon_lol:

Mike,

Nice review. :thumb: I liked that you included your modifications to the stock kit. You seemed very objective and pointed out the minor deficiencies while not gushing inordinately about the many positive aspects of the design.

Have you played much symphonic music through the Abbys yet? You mentioned that they had great clarity so would this apply to very dense music?   How well they handle the imaging demands of orchestral music. Are the various groups of instruments easily located? Certainly they would have no trouble with the dynamics.

Thanks,

Roy

p.s. Perhaps these speakers need a separate thread. Whoops , I just noticed that there is a Geddes thread already.

Excellent review Mike.  :thumb:  Pretty much sums up what I heard when I was at Geddes'.  Another thing I noticed was that due to lack of distortion we were playing at much higher levels that I perceived.  Do you find yourself playing any louder?

Oh yeah, I have to be conscious of the level and not go overboard. The seeming lack of distortion and compression unfortunately encourages turning it up. :) Of course part of how I judge equipment is when something makes me want to turn it down, regardless of level, it has to go.

Henry,

What model Edcors did you use? I have heard of people measuring to 30hz with the standard ones and when all is said and done they are more or less full-range.

I used the GSXE on my SE amp and it definitely has no lack of bottom end.

I will post pics of my projects when I get home.

Hi Bill,
I used the ones provided in the kit, I believe they were XSE10-8-8K (10 watt, 8k resistance).  Compared to my Carina and other amps, it was obvious that while these produced bass, they just didn't have the heft.  I ordered the Transcendar 10 watt, 8k and the difference in tone is very noticeable and desirable for me.

Many Spud guys are running the big 15" Silver Iris speakers and maybe in that application the Spud isn't bass shy.  Regardless, it's a great little amp and it's a keeper for me.

If you get randy sometime I can highly recommend the 6T9 compactron.

They put out about the same wattage SE as the spud (6t9 is a 12w pentode and a triode) but the bass weight and sound impressed me much more...I had a Spud at the house for a short time and it was very warm in the mids but not much elsewhere...this was before they switched to Edcors though.

Glad you found bliss in the new transformers!

I'm pretty sure the XSE10 8-8K was original release that I have now, and by the looks of your chassis, it should have come with a replacement model designed for a bit lower frequency response.  I followed your thread on the transformer upgrade; very nice indeed.

I'm still drooling over a Carina... why can't I just get myself to sell off my DIY projects and just get one :duh:

Oh, does "almost done" count?

This is my DIYAudio "Pumpkin/Shunty" dual mono balanced preamp with dual shunt regulated power supplies. The AC supply will be separately housed with the dual toroids shown and built in Felix conditioner.  The aluminum plates are temporary heatsinks until the correct ones arrive.  They do run HOT!  With +/-36v rails, the modules can easily swing +/-20 volts balanced to drive my monoblock First Watt PassDIY F4 clones to full output in Class A (finally) for my Emerald Physics CS2 woofer section.  They're set up for about 19db gain, easily matched to the 15db of my F5 for the CS2's compression driver/waveguide.  All I need now is a decent case to put them in and I'm in business.  They do play music, at least on the bench listening setup

Your bench is too neat Tom, it disturbs me. :)

Since we have moved to almost done... I've been building a custom DCX mod for a friend, his won't have the Jan Didden analog board but I'm hoping it sounds at least as good but of course without the volume control. Reworking the output stage from 4 op-amps/channel to 1 and it will be direct coupled. The input stage has been interesting, using an LM4562 for an input buffer feeding a OPA1632 diff amp. I had some TI TL431 shunt regulators on hand so I am using one of those to provide the 2.5V for the ADC biasing. I've altered the gain architecture to hopefully maximize the ADC/DAC levels to provide the best SNR and maximum bits of digital conversion.

I have 3 projects in progress -- one just about done, the other I have all the parts collected but need some assistance with a very dense PC board, and in the starting to gather the cheaper parts and figure out last design details phase of the third.

They are:

1.) Complete makeover of Horn Shoppe Horns.  The Austrailian Lacewood veneer finished with catalyzed lacquer, the threaded brass inserts for the driver mounting screws, the threaded brass inserts for the spikes, and the BB fill hole drilled to fit the custom 2" aluminum cover plate are all done.  The solid copper binding posts are mounted on plates, and the Chimera Labs 7-7 OCC Litz braid internal wiring are all here and waiting to be installed.  I need to get them over to a friend's house so I can use his drill press to drill the two-step hole for the EAR Isoloss grommet for the wiring, and then the compression chamber gets lined with felt before installing the wire and drivers.  Then the last step will be to felt line parts of the Horn mouth.  I experimented with most of this stuff before deciding to go all out on the finishing, so the final results should be even better than the temporary tweaks.

The second project is a Millet Max Mini hybrid headphone amp, and all parts are in the house, including big black gate NX series output coupling and cathode bypass caps, and audio note tantalum output coupling resistors.  Pretty much everything else is stock as called for in the BOM except for a pair of Vampire RCAs and a Thingamabob for the volume knob.

And the last project, *the* big, no holds-barred amp project, will be some variation of Poindexter's Musical Machine.  Just have to decide on driver tubes and Iron, and of course come up with the money to pay for it :D.

I haven't said much in the lab lately, but I've been working on these various things for quite some time now -- mostly the Horns.

I'll post pics of the whole Horn makeover process in another thread when I'm done and they are playing.

I decided to sticky this thread, since its a fun thread and worth drooling over pictures of someone's creation.  The point is to make it a gallery of pictures, and possibly links to build threads.

I am also considering making a thread on "what equipment are you currently working on?"  That seems to be a popular enough sub-topic, that it deserves its own thread.

I think I can officially say my Behringer DCX2496 digital crossover is "done" now.  If you're using one of these, especially with the Emerald Physics CS2's, you don't know what you're missing.  It simply sounds fantastic now.

Many thanks to Mike Galusha for leading the way on what works and what doesn't in this setup.  I've followed his journey and exchanged a zillion emails and instant messages with him.  Amazingly, he has been totally patient with all of my questions and tribulations.  In the home stretch last week, he even sent me a few parts from his personal stash to finish it up.  This is the kind of guy AC is all about, that is, a community.

The final mod list:
- Replace analog inputs and outputs with Linear Audio (Jan Didden) remote control analog I/O board with a few tweaks
- Remove CS8420 digital in.  Install Frank Oettle CS8416 clock/SRC replacement board (<2ps jitter).
- Replace 2 7805 regulators with 2 Oettle discrete mini-regulators (5v)
- Removed extra A/D converter not used on C input
- Replaced 3 AKM 4393 DACs with AKM 4396 DACs
- Replaced all electrolytics with Panasonic FM's, Black Gates, and Elna Silmic II's
- Installed LC filters on +/-15v lines
- Rewired and reterminated AES/XLR input to BNC SPDIF 75 ohm with coax, bypass ribbon cable and connectors
- Add external "Felix" AC mains filter

At this point there isn't much left to do.  Most likely, the weak link is the analog output section, but I'm not sure this poor DCX chassis/pcb could take any more soldering to improve it.  I think I"ll quit while I"m ahead.

My current setup is:
- Bolder SB2 - loaded, with Nirvana supply, etc.
- modded DCX2496 as above
- "Pumpkin/Shunty" balanced gain stage on LF (~19db) to provide big voltage swing to the F4's
- "Felix" built-in to preamp's remote AC/transformer box
- Balanced monoblock DIY First Watt F4 clones on LF (driven by Pumpkin)
- Single ended DIY FIrst Watt F5 clone on HF (~16db)
- Emerald Physics CS2's, bypassed binding posts on compression drivers

I'm really happy with the result and I know for sure why Mike isn't doing these conversions any more.  The boards are very fragile since they were made to be built only once by automated equipment, not hacked up by the likes of me.  It takes a lot of hours to do this right, and Mike saved me probably double that with his helpful tips (Chip Quik is the BEST!).  I now have a huge bag full of discarded parts to show for it too.

There are a lot of mod strategies for the DCX, but this combo has to be one of the best in terms of integration of the right stuff.  I really didn't believe this lowly device could sound this good, but as Zybar told me several times, indeed it does.

Bravo Mike, Jan D, and Frank O !

Tom

Thanks Josh.  I feel good about having almost my entire system DIY or heavily modded commercial stuff now.  A pair of Abbeys would really top that off, but my budget can't handle it at the moment

There are two F4's run as monoblocks in balanced mode.  The Pumpkin/Shunty preamp is set up as a fixed gain stage (20db) to drive the F4's to full output for LF from the output of the DCX.  I suppose I need to get a picture so it makes more sense.

Build the Pass Labs B1 preamplifier as my first electronics project.  Was quite enjoyable despite wiring on of the pots in reverse!  The resulting preamplifier sounds much better than my Golden Tube SEP-1; cleaner, but not harsh and etched.  I am considering building some mono blocks, but need to find a source for large heat sinks (approximately four matching 5" x 11").

Tannoy HPD-385A crossover, work in progress.  My goal was to discard the original switches and autoformer.

Since the picture was taken, the plastic bobbin Madisound inductor has been replaced by the appropriate Alpha Core.  Soon the boxes will be stained and polyed like the Tannoy's they belong to.

Here's the response:

Other than the dip at 400hz(due to cabinet resonance), the curve is much flatter than before.

For the cabinet, try an oak dowel as a cross brace.  Not too big in terms of volume and yet effective.

I just finished a mega-build of my preamp design. It features HYPER-FRED diodes, Panasonic power caps with Solen bypasses, a Tubecad H-PS-1 tube heater supply, PRP resistors everywhere but the grid stoppers which have vintage carbons.

It also features a cap selector on the outputs which has a Hyrel Q PIO cap bypassed by a dayton film and a pair of dayton polys in the second slot.

Input cap is Jantzen Z-superior.

It uses 6j6 tubes, just like the base version of my pre.

Timothy,

if you can't find a local supplier Conrad heat sinks in Australia have what you want.

http://www.conradheatsinks.com/products/flat100_350.html#MF30

Conrad dimensions might seem a little odd at first sight in that they call what I'd call "length", "width" and vice versa but you can get 150mm [approx 6"] tall by 300 or 350mm [~12" and 14" respectively] sinks at reasonable prices. I'm using 4 of the latter in a Class A amp I'm building at the moment ... excellent quality! Total weight for 4 of the longer [wider  :) ?] ones is ~20lb so things can start to get heavy which could be a hazard for postage.

New speakers for my shop.  Foxtex single driver with a "Urban Graff" finish.  Mostly a project to work on while glue/paint dries on others.

Chris,

Congrats on finishing the Nathans!

I recently finished all the tweaks and mods to my Horn Shoppe Horns and hope to post some pics soon.  They're sounding really, really good too.

I bought the Horns with no finish, just bare wood and some tan color faux stone applied to the Horn mouth, and then did the following:

1.) Had a local audio buddy/ pro cabinetmaker veneer and lacquer all sides but the horn mouth with Aussie Lacewood with a light tint of red analine dye.

2). Re-orient the drivers to the square orientation instead of the original diamond configuration and install #8 threaded brass inserts.

3) drill flush hole for ballast fill port cover plate and then 1/2" hole in the center of that for filling BBs.

4)  replaced stock binding posts with solid, unplated copper CMC posts and rewired with a 16" length of Chimera Labs 7-7 enameled OCC Litz wire.

5) applied 1/8" industrial noise absorbtion grade felt to upper and lower horn mouths, and rear, and back 4" of compression chamber left, right, and top surfaces.

6) Applied 3/16" gore-tex gasket around driver opening, soldered Planet 10 modified FE-126s in place (with the fluffy wool pad glued on the back of the magnet), and bolted drivers in place with #8 brass button head machine screws.

7) Filled bottoms of speakers with 24,000 BBs per side, stuffed remaining empty space with wads of compressed heavy craft paper, and screwed aluminum cover plates in place.

Setup, connect speaer wires, and enjoy...

Will post pics soon as I can figure out how to shrink them.

I haven't hooked them up yet.  I know it is hard to believe, but I am not all setup at the moment.  I may pull out the QSC waveguides, put the DE250's on them and rough out a xo in the 1.2khz range but that is a little high for the TD15Xs.

I did some work on my Abbey clones today.  Getting it all sanded down for the primer coat and then I'll finish them with this pro-audio textured paint I bought that rolls on.  I am thinking of mounting a removeable back on them so I can alternate between quasi cardiod and sealed enclosure.

I also have the MT waveguides from these, plus the drivers...
http://www.qscaudio.com/products/speakers/hpr/hpr153i.htm

Could possibly work with that, but I am not sure if I have 6 channels of amps working unless it was a hodge podge.  Maybe I could pull my reciever into action.

The LM3886 chip is rated at 68 watts. I'm under driving them, so get about 50 watts per chip. It does make a nice little 100 watt amp. Plenty of guts to drive even non-efficient speakers and has a nice crisp high end.

Title: Bandpass subs (veneered sonotubes) and class D amp
Post by: DougSmith on 27 Jan 2010, 02:01 pm
I recently finished building these 4th order bandpass subs, which I designed to complement my Geddes Abbeys.

The port opening is at the top end, covered by grill cloth. There is a ¼” layer of cork between the sonotube (14” diameter) and veneer to smooth out the surface and to add some extra dampening. The drivers are B&C 12TBX100s (same as the Abbey woofers) and are mounted vertically with a 4” port and a fairly small front chamber.  Here is a picture of the baffle and port assembly:

I am using a DCX 2496 and external amps to drive them. I built the amps as well using two 2 x 250W modules from Class D Audio.

They sound great… providing a subtle (but deep) foundation for music – but also capable of room-shaking response on movies or bass-heavy music. I have two (bridgeable) channels left on the amp for a third sub, but I haven’t decided what to do for that one yet.

- Doug

Title: Bandpass subs (veneered sonotubes) and class D amp
Post by: DougSmith on 27 Jan 2010, 02:57 pm
Yes, it's mahogany.

Here is what the response looks like in-room from just the subs. It is averaged across the main listening position; one sub front between the mains and one in the back to the side of the listening position. I also added several narrow bands of EQ to knock down the peaks in the response - the stuff at around 300 hz is ambient noise form my heating system, not port resonance (it was still there with the subs turned off):

and here they are with the Abbeys...  EDIT: I ended up with the following after a bit more optimization work (including phase adjustment, adding a few more PEQ filters in the DCX for the subs, plus a few in my receiver as well for the mains in the 80-200 Hz region; 0.05 octave smoothing). Looks like I can probably get away without a third sub.

The Truce TT was an evolution of Peters desire to build a cheapo tt,
and my compulsive mass sentiment.

brg and platter
http://cgi.ebay.com/Timaudio-DIY-Separate-Motor-for-Turntable-Belt_W0QQitemZ400106218398QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d2830639e
Not really partial to the inverted bearing design as it makes the oil
resevoir nearly impossible, and due to the fact that this particular
brg has tightish clearances running grease as is usually required in
an inverted design was not desireable, (IMHO).
Not visable in the picture is a center hub that incorporates a
resessed well that acts as an oil resevoir.
There is a layer of reinforced rubber between the hub and the 1.5"
base plinth. The cutting block is sandwiched between the bearing hub
and the plinth, nodding my hat towards constrained layer damping. The
arm mount which was intended to have the set screws mounted in the
back for cosmetic reasons mounts the rb300 style threaded stub on a
length of material that is fitted closely to the hub to allow arm
removal and addition height offset for the uk audio mods arm.
Watching Peter work on TT's has allowed me to tailor this particular
design to make it easier for him to service and adjust the arm without
having to acces the bottom of the deck.
Peter originally wanted to mount an armboard on the butcher block as
well as add spikes to the base. I felt compelled to over do it.
Number wise I believe this one is the fifth construction.
I also like the idea of adding mass to the end of the moment arm, that
being the arm mount at the end of the plinth. Adding mass to that
point reduces the resonant frequency. In my own experience this quiets
the feedback loop/hum that occurs at louder volume levels. This is
also the first forray into a non-empire motor driven deck, breaking
the reliance on parts that are rapidly gaining in price. I am very
grateful to Peter for the experience I have had building tt's. It has
been quite rewarding and I wouldn't have been able to perservere
without his confidence, approval, and generosity.
Best rgards,Bill

Thanks MJ.  You are correct in assuming they sound great, they really do, I will review them after I have had more time but for now I have this stupid grin across my face when I listen to them.

I wasnt really going for the penguin look but you are not the first to mention the similarity.  The art decco look is something that I had in mind, at least subconsciously.  If I had completed the top ornament for the grill there would be no mistake, it would look even more art decco-ish .  After four failed attempts to make the grill addition I decided to set it aside (part is too small and I value my fingers!).

Magnificent Ed ... love the feet!!

Berndt;

That's a great looking tt for a very reasonable outlay. Not sure if it's intended but I imagine the copper would quickly remove static from records too.

A question about lubricant. You mention oil or grease for the centre hub  reservoir. What specific type of oil would you use in this situation? There's some interesting possibilities in synthetic/teflon oil that could be well suited to a job like this.

Title: Re: What equipment have you built recently?

witht the tighter clearances of this bearing I am using mobil1 atf.
The hub that the bearing sits in has a resevoir detail so the oil can be contained, normaly not an option with an inverted design.

Thanks for the detail photo.

mobil automatic transmission fluid eh? Clearly you've put some thought into it.

I'm wondering if lubricants intended for watches and clocks might be useful in various parts of tts. Moebius make a series of lubricants ranging from light oil [used in watches for the fast moving balance whee] right through to a grease designed for heavier shafts and slow moving parts [eg the shaft for the barrel holding the spring for a watch or clock]. These are specifically designed to last for maybe 5 years between servicing [unlike older oils]. Moebius costs a packet for very small amounts but there's other options like Dupont, teflon synthetic.

Even if it would not be useful for the bearing we're talking about here, there's a heap of places on a tt that need lubrication and maybe something better than the stuff we use on sewing machines.

Hmm, maybe I should post this in the vinyl circle?

I've always thought a low friction coating like I use on many components would work great on s TT spindle.  Hmm.  Now if I only had a TT worth doing it on.   :(  I knew I never should've sold it...
Title: Re: What equipment have you built recently?
Post by: Berndt on 3 Jun 2010, 01:28 pm
The lubricant viscosity makes an audible effect. The clearances in the empires I started out on didn't sound very coherent with lighter weight lubricant, actualy ended up using teflon grease, from the bicycle days. Mobil 1 atf is what Thom Makris of Galibier TT's suggests using.
Perhaps a new thread is in order, so we can stop the hyjack. Also the thrust bearing material makes a difference as well.

Not too much of a project, but I needed something to get my DIY chops up, since it's been so long since I've built anything.

I modded the PC-19 driver boards in a Hafler DH 500 using these simple kits;

http://cgi.ebay.com/Hafler-DH-500-PC-19-Power-Amplifier-Upgrade-Kit-/260618432185?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cae11aeb9 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Hafler-DH-500-PC-19-Power-Amplifier-Upgrade-Kit-/260618432185?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cae11aeb9)

It's really just a cap replacement with higher end caps and a slight mod. Then I set the bias and DC offset.

Also upgraded the PS caps to Nippon Chemi-Con 22,000uF. Upgraded some wiring to shielded, upgraded the binding posts and RCAs.

A couple of evenings is all it took. Probably barely worth a mention for the experts here.

But the results were impressive. Wider sound stage, the highs were sweeter, the bass tighter. Even my non-audiophile (musician) girlfriend was able to hear the difference.

I just noticed this. Damn!  That carpet under the subs is exactly the same as the one we've got; not so easy to tell but nevertheless ...

I just finished a pair of Solo103 speakers from HumbleHiFi.  They use the Fostex FE103en driver in place of the FE103e because I could not get the older model.  Of course they do not play super low but I am using them with a GR servo sub so no issue there. I think they sound very nice and smooth.  I used 3/4" blatic birch for the cabs.  Here are a few pics.  I am in the process of building some stands for them out of 1.5" square steel tubing.

I measured 44.9 to 45 V DC. Recommended DC voltage for the SDS 254 I recall was between 40-50 V DC per Tom. The rectifiers themselves are On Semi MUR3060 types (http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=MUR3060WTGOS-ND) (Hexfred) and are rated for 15A each! They are a 3pin TO-247 type. I bought them in bulk last year so I got a great price.

Poseidon's Voice Sabre 32S digital analog converter - fully differential outputs.

The front panel is black anodized and comes with the enclosure - from DIY Hifi Supply (http://www.diyhifisupply.com/), it was fully engraved and infilled using Front Panel Express software. The graphics of the Twisted Pear and Buffalo were imported into Corel Draw, modified for increased resolution and then exported to FPE.

This is the rear panel. Pretty self explanatory. IEC is a Furutech. Switch is from Radio Shack. Vampire RCA posts and Neutrik XLR's. Digital input is WBT RCA/75 ohms. The rear isn't engraved because it is a painted black aluminum, not anodized in other words.

Inside full view. Pretty classical layout. Keep AC components on one side and DC on other. You will see that a good 75% of this enclosure is occupied with power supply components.

Felix IEC filter as detailed elsewhere on this site. It's now a permanent part of my builds.

Hammond dual bobbin/split bobbin transformers, eliminates the need for an electrostatic shield between the primary and secondaries. Also provides for some high frequency filtering from the AC line. One 1A transformer for each of the three supplies (digital, positive analog, negative analog). Each transformer is carefully placed 90 degrees to the other to minimize hum. All AC wiring is twisted.

These are the 3 Peter Daniel CRC supplies. Each capacitor is a 15,000 uf Mundorf electrolytic. The diodes are MUR 3060 three pin, hexfred technology.

Paul Hynes shunt regulators. One for each supply. Ensures nearly complete isolation. I could've gone further and designed in separate analog supplies for each phase/channel! No space though.

The Twisted Pear Buffalo 32S board. Has its own onboard IVY II analog output board with relays so you don't hear a 'pop' from your speakers when you turn the dac off. The output voltage is set at 2V rms (balanced output) by Shinkoh Tantalum resistors. Matched to 1%. The unbalanced/RCA output is 1V rms.

Descriptions/details to follow.

Questions/Criticisms welcome.

Anand.

Check out the custom a/v rack that my girlfriend and I built for my system. I looked forever for the right size and capacity rack on the net, and basically couldn't find anything that I thought actually looked cool and wasn't $800+. So for $120 in parts (good 1"x17"x44" pine board, brackets, paint), we had a blast designing and building this one :D:

very promising indeed...

For passive bi-amping with separate high and mid/low level controls, and a master volume control. This takes advantage of the loudspeaker designer's optimized crossover/driver combination...a chance to appreciate his art.

In order to complement my rigged Mac Mini 2009 I built a custom linear power supply that puts out ~ 18V DC.

Ingredients are as follows:

A couple of points. For the DC connector cable, I designated Pin 4 as my Hot/+18V/Red wire; Pin 2 as my Sensor/Grey wire; and Pin 1 as my Ground/Black wire. In addition, you will see how I connected the 0.1uf/100V capacitor to the shield of the Neutrik jack and to Ground/Pin 1. This 4 pin Neutrik was used as a matter of convenience. There is more space when you have 4 pins around, even though one pin is left unused (Pin 3 in this case).

I tried this power supply with and without the Bybee MR installed. Using the Paul Hynes series regulator & supply it offers excellent performance as you would expect as an upgrade from the stock Apple switcher supply which wasn't designed for audio (compared to some other finely designed switchers in the audio industry - all of them at this point come from a small company in the Netherlands!). However, the Bybee MR to my ears, does improve the performance but slightly. You wouldn't miss it in most systems. Since I decided to use the Bybee MR, I had to account for the 2V DC voltage drop, and as such used a toroidal transformer with 20V secondaries instead of 18V secondaries. The Paul Hynes unit has an onboard potentiometer for fine tuning of the output voltage. The Nichicon Gold Tune Super Through capacitors were recommended to me by Peter Daniel who found it was a close second in sonics to Jensen's famed 4 pole electrolytics. I could not implement the 4 poles in this design as I would've had to hack into Paul Hynes' excellent board which I didn't want to do. Make sure you design for adequate heatsinking and heat sink compound. I used a 3/4 inch thick (20mm) piece of aluminum that was 6 inches by 5 inches (152 mm by 127 mm) in addition to the chassis itself. It runs warm but not uncomfortably warm.

The unit measures at 17.99V without a load and about 17.96V with the Mac Mini & 1 external firewired hard drive. With the load on, I measure absolutely no AC perturbations on the output. In addition, the unit is silent as a mouse, no buzz at all with my ear on the chassis.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Best of luck in your builds :thumb:,

Anand.

Special thanks to jtwrace, Wayne of Bolder Cables, and Paul Hynes.

Nice build as usual, Annan.

Interesting that you found a small improvement using the Bybee. The PR3 is pretty quiet but perhaps additional noise reduction is still worthwhile. Of course there may be other reasons that you heard an improvement but one can only speculate, as it is a sealed unit. A good result overall.

Kudos on your choice of a toroidal transformer with with a shield between primary and secondary. It makes for an effective shunt to ground for line noise which without shield would capacitively couple from primary to secondary.

I really wanted to do EI core, but at these sizes (200+ VA), they hum and buzz. So the next best choice was a toroid with electrostatic shielding, magnetic shielding and a steel cover. Well worth the money.

Title: Buffalo III ES9018 DAC
Post by: GBB on 2 Jul 2012, 01:41 am
I just finished building a DAC based on the Twisted Pear Audio Buffalo III kit.  It has the Buffalo III DAC board with the latest Trident regulators from TP Audio.  I use a single SPDIF input module.  Outputs are transformer coupled using Sowter 1:18.7 transformers.  The output of the Buffalo DAC is loaded with 25ohm resistors.  That combined with the step up of the Sowters gives a "normal" level for the DAC.  I buffer the transformers with a discrete FET buffer so that there is sufficient drive.  I've found that transformer output alone can sound a bit light weight.
The whole thing is powered by an R-core transformer I got off of ebay - 120v/240v primary with dual 9v and 15v secondaries.  The 9v secondaries are paralleled to drive the digital section and the 15v primaries are rectified and regulated to give +-15v for the FET buffer.  The digital section is regulated using a Placid HD shunt regulator from TP audio while the buffer uses LT1086 adjustable regulators.  I've only had it working for an hour or so but it sounds pretty good so far.  Definitely worth the effort.
I built the DAC in a wooden box.  The bottom is 1/2" baltic birch plywood, while the sides and top are solid oak.  Below are a few pictures of the finished DAC.

Very nice Gary, I built a Buffalo II based DAC in a similar fashion but used Lundahl's on the outputs and it sounds quite nice. I ended up with only a 1V output to keep the Zout down and as you mention, to keep it from sounding a bit thin. I had plenty of gain in my preamp, so this was an acceptable trade in my situation but I like the FET output buffer, lots of drive there.  :thumb:

I guess you could call this "equipment"......  It helps me listen to music, so I suppose so. :dunno:

When I sit at my computer desk I like to listen to music. The tunes are on a server located in the rack with the rest of my equipment, but I control the tunes remotely via a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 that sits on the desk next to me. I've got a leather case that holds the tablet vertical but the problem with that, is when it's sitting vertical, the charge cord can't plug in because in Samsung's wisdom, they put the charging jack on the bottom. So I can either keep it plugged in and lay it flat, or stand it up and not charge it. Laying flat is hard to read and since it may be on all day, not charging it isn't an option.

I've looked for "off the shelf" solutions and can't find one, so I made one.
I built a stand that holds it up high enough that the cord can still be plugged in.

Oh happy day.   :thumb:

Some day I may put some kind of finish on it. For now, it's just fine.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well I have an Acer A500 tablet and I may well copy your slick little stand. Now there's a compliment.
I never thought I'd see the day when you would copy me Mike.  :o

If I had one thing to change, it would be the depth of the back. It's tilted back about 12 degrees and the base doesn't extend far enough rearwards. I was trying to avoid having a huge plywood "structure" sitting on the desk, and wanted to make it slim looking. So if I touch the top of the screen too hard, it's a bit tippy.
Although I think a couple rubber feet in the back would fix that.

For years I've been using plain old resistors for amplifier loads but the largest I had was rated at 100W and they became hot very quickly. Some Google searches turned up a suggestion to use heating elements as loads. A bit of searching on Amazon turned up some Emerson/Maytag dryer heating elements. They are rated for 4750W each, no issues with capacity and just over $20 each delivered, so worth a shot. One thing that was an unexpected bonus, the coils are wound in opposing directions for each row, making the load essentially non-inductive. The LCR bridge shows only about a 20mOhm difference between 100Hz and 10kHz, close enough.

The overall resistance is about 10.6R, so I simply measured from each end to find the 4R point, cut the coils at that spot and tied them together along with some 10GA wire. This allows for 8, 4 and 2 Ohm loads with various jumper connections. I finally got around to mounting them in something non flammable and with plenty of airflow. I purchased the chassis from JoshK many years ago and we used it at work for a drive array until recently. It was going to the trash and it occurred to me that it would make a dandy housing for this purpose. All the other components except for the fan and banana jacks were scrap bits; much to the agony of my wife, I am a pack rat. The front plate was some leftover 2U rack mount panel, the brackets one the wire end of the loads were from a failed transformer, the other brackets from a dead amp, they originally held some heat sinks. Some aluminum angle for the panel mount, no idea where it came from but it was a freebie, some extra holes but they don't matter.

Not pretty, very industrial but works well. The fan is rated at 195CFM and even with 1200W into 2R I didn't have any heat problems. :) The best part is I have less than $100 invested, excluding the original cost of the chassis and that has long since been recouped.

Do heating elements change resistance with temperature?
Title: Re: What equipment have you built recently?
Post by: mgalusha on 26 Aug 2012, 01:29 pm
Do heating elements change resistance with temperature?

Yes they do and that is why I put the biggest fan I could fit into the case. :)

I did test it, the measured resistance changes by about .1R after 10 minutes with my heat gun on high and no fan running, the chassis and the elements were very hot after this time. The IR thermometer showed the element at about 100C but that cannot be 100% correct as the IR probe is calibrated for black body radiation, so it was possibly hotter.

Shutting off the heat gun and engaging the fan caused the resistance to return to normal in less than 20 seconds, so during normal use I don't expect much change; the fan will of course be running before any testing occurs and for THD+N vs Power sweeps, the amplifiers are only pushed to high power for a few seconds, even when using a 100 step sweep (the default is 30 steps).

The temperature question came up at work decades ago.  So we used some big power resistors (maybe 250 or 500 watt)  put some thermocouples on them, heated them up, pulled the plug and measured temp and resistance as they cooled.  The resistance value oscillated around the room temp value as they cooled.  Those oscillations were rather small.

43x16x20", about 200lbs. Faital pro main driver, Beyma AMT HF driver, 2 x CSS subs with Hypex DSP controlled 2 x 400W amp per speaker. Step down transformer to convert speaker to line level balanced to drive the sub amp. ~98dB/M/W. Being that I'm not a woodworker I'm pretty happy with the result. The folks who have heard them seem to like them.

Thanks Bob. A lot of dust this summer. Nothing makes a mess quite like a router and when the panels are 5 layers thick.. yeah, a hell of a mess.

The single most productive piece of equipment I own is the dust collector.
That thing has saved me more time than any other tool in the workshop.

Kinda reminds me of when audio guys get around to acoustically treating their room, they say, "I wish I would have done that sooner".

I have a 5HP cyclone collection system, which would have been installed this summer but then the speaker project occurred and as he plans to use them for RMAF, I had a rather fixed deadline and getting them done consumed all available time.

My 14 year-old helped me build the Fusion-6 by Matt Grant http://www.diysoundgroup.com/waveguide-speaker-kits/fusion-6.html (http://www.diysoundgroup.com/waveguide-speaker-kits/fusion-6.html)
They sound great -- dynamic and natural. They do not have pants-flapping bass, but they sound plenty big and they can play loud without strain.
The biggest lesson we learned is that finishing speakers takes skill and patience, especially when doing things the hard way, which looks deceptively like the easy way. It's presentable, especially for a bedroom system on bookshelves, but if I were to do it again I would work harder (and smarter) on the paint job.
Anyway, we are really happy with the sound. This was a fun project.
The response graph was made by averaging three mic positions in a two-foot arc around the listening position from 8 ft. away.
