Title: Who has an Audiophile Stereo in their Vehicle...Please post the details!
Post by: medium jim on 21 Apr 2012, 06:39 pm
With all the members of the AC, I have no doubt that many also enjoy the benefits of an Audiophile System in one or more of they're vehicles and it would be a great reference to know what you have.

Thanks,
Jim

Okay, I will get the ball rolling. About 5 years ago I budgeted 2K for a system for my car, and with that I was able to get a Premier FH-P800BT Double Din Receiver, a pair of Premier TS-P720PRS Component front speakers, Premier TS-A633P rear fills, a JL Audio 10" 10WXV-2-4 Sub and a JL Audio JX 1000/1D amp.  This is all off of the shelf stuff, but wholly crap, it sure sounded amazingly good.  The soundstage was nearly as good as my home system and with as much clarity and detail.

It has made driving fun again, even in the brutal Los Angeles Traffic, I get nearly as much enjoyment from my car system as I derive from my home system.  I knew I had something special when I gave my good friend a ride and he was totally impressed, this is from a guy who has a home system that costs well over 100K.

Okay, the let's hear from the rest of you guys!

Jim

I'll go next :thumb:

I spent a bit more on this system than I did on my previous ones since I saved so much on my vehicle purchase. Speaking of which, my hooptie is an '01 Lincoln Continental. When I picked up this cream puff she only had 36,000 miles. She'd been garaged her whole life.

Anyway, I finally bit the bullet and picked up the Pioneer AVH-P5200BT head unit. It's got blue tooth, and SD chip slot, iPod USB with a direct interface, back up camera, DVD, Sat Nav and Sirius. Rather than going with an exteranl crossover I'm using the one in the head unit (which is pretty good actually).

The head unit feeds the Butler Audio TBD475 tube hybrid cab amp. The Butler feeds a pair of Polk SR6500 component speakers for the fronts and a pair of Polk DXi650 coax for the rear doors.

Filling in the bottom end I have a cheapie Pioneer 700w something or other powering a pair of 12" Adire Audio Shiva MkII subs in a sealed cabinet.

All my wiring is silver plated copper. I've wrapped the doors of the cab with some RAAMat BXT II.

I've got to say, this is the best system I've had in a car to date...and I've done quite a few really nice 12 volt systems over the years. It does a LOT of things really well. This system just plain smokes. When you lean into it it comes alive. great transients, tons of serious slam (when you want) and fairly decent highs (the one slight weak spot).

I dig the crap out of it  :green:

My high end car system goes back to the late seventies while I was in high school.

It was a Pioneer deck and amp driving coax speakers in the back and small 3" drivers mounted high on the doors. I had to cut holes in the doors and they were just below the windows. It was in a 74 Torino.

Had to be one of the nicest systems at school, as I heard nothing like it. Cost around $700.00 to $800.00 back then.

Jim:

Can you share if your front speakers are mounted in the dash, or doors. If doors, at the bottom?

One of the reasons I liked my old system was the mounting of the drivers high on the doors.

Ronny:

The fronts are components with the drivers mounted in the lower panels in the doors, with the silk dome tweeters in the door frames at ear level.  The rear fill drivers are also in the door panels and the sub is mounted on the rear deck.

I wanted to keep it as stock looking as possible. The Bluetooth mic is mounted on the rear view mirror and the iPod/iPhone dock in the glovebox.

I use factory HU because it is connected to climate control and I hate it.  I also have an AUX in and a separate iPod interface.

HU>Cleansweep>Arc 4200SE amp>Hertz Mille front components and Focal rear.  I also have a little 300 watt Arc pushing an even smaller 6" sub in my trunk.

Does it sound good?  It does when I'm going 80 miles an hour with all five windows open.  Otherwise, not very.  I'd like to ditch the HU or get a decent processor, but I already have about $4,000 in it and don't really want to spend any more.

Besides, I have almost that much $ in my exhaust, which I actually prefer to listen to.

Edited for typo and model number correct.

A couple years ago I was looking to upgrade my home stereo. I visited the high end audio shops in the nearest city looking for speakers around the $2000-$3000 price range.  What was fun to learn is that the stereo in my car wasn't too far off from these speakers in mids and highs, and could blow them away with low frequencies.

This was in my previous vehicle. Currently trying to sell it though, because it won't fit in what i'm driving now.

Image Dynamics cd-ultra full body horns
Image Dynamics X65 mids
Image Dynamics IDQ15 subs, each in 1.6 ft^3 boxes(had 2 of these)
Alpine 9813 head unit
Alpine pxa-h701 processor
Alpine rux-c701 control
Alpine mrd-m1000 sub amp
Alpine mrv-t420 mid amp
Alpine mrt-t320 horn amp
2 rolls Raamat

Here's a pic of the amps to show why it's difficult to fit these + 2 15" subs in a tacoma.  The big amp in the middle is 21.7 inches wide

Thanks Jim:

So are the front speakers coax? Are the silk dome tweeters taken off the front coax and it's crossover used, or is the coax complete and a totally separate tweeter used up top, if so what tweeter and crossover and freq. cutoff? If you had any pictures that would help. I take it that the tweeter is at the back of the front door, or is it in the windshield post?

Thanks,   This car audio section is a rocken.

The fronts are component with separate x/o's, sorry I don't have pic's...the tweeters are in the windshield posts in the front of the door.   Having the drivers on the bottom and the tweets on the top actually is a good layout as it creates a nice 3d soundstage.

I bought the Premier's over Focal and Diamonds as they just had the magic and were getting excellent reviews.  I want to put emphasis on the importance of getting the best speaker you can afford, even at the sake of a lesser head unit.

My goal was to get a serious sound system that didn't needed to be cranked to make it sound good, and I acheived that goal.

Do some homework, which includes who to go to buy from and who to install...many times it will be the same.

Thanks Jim.

So those Primeirs are Pioneer, correct?

Having the tweeters up high like that is real important. Even though you will get phase cancellation issues at the crossover with the drivers so far apart.

If you can, take some photos.

Rocket:

Phase cancellation is not an issue and the Premier (TOTL Pioneer) are mounted in the factory locations in the doors.

Thanks,

Here's a pic FWIW.  Dinky JL sub on the left.  The interesting thing about this is, the cabinet is wood and it took my installer about 45 minutes to fabricate it.  Hertz Crossovers in the middle.  Arc 4200SE on the right.

Congrats on the new thread!

Yes.  Have a McIntosh Audio System in my car (http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/us/Products/pages/categorylanding.aspx?CatId=CarAudioSource).  I use Focal K2 Power 165 speaker system (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_091165KRX3/Focal-K2-Power-165-KRX3.html?search=Focal+VENDORID091&searchdisplay=Focal).  It is like an extension of audiophile experience when traveling. Most cars nowadays have the radio integrated with HVAC systems.  The most challenging part is integrating the audio system in the car's interior.  I know because, I installed the system with a help of a good friend.  :)

It is composed of:
McIntosh car audio MX406
McIntosh power output meter MPM4000
McIntosh Compact Disc changer MCD4000
McIntosh 4x100 watt channel MCC404M
etc...etc...

I have (had, see below) an FJ Cruiser that has a sweet system in it.  Front end is fed by a 160gig Ipod (with non-compressed files) line out to a Wadia Itransport (the FJ has an AC outlet in the back, so that powers the Wadia), digital out from the Wadia to digital input of a McIntosh head unit.  A 2-channel Zapco amp, with EQ functions, feeds Hybrid Audio Technologies L1v2 tweeters, a separate 4-channel Zapco (also with EQ) powers 4" HAT Legatia mids and 6" HAT Legatia mid-bass drivers.  Also  have an 8" Image Dynamic sub in a custom box in front of the rear seat.  Other than the sub, all speakers are in the stock locations--the dealer and Scott B. of HAT entered in in the 'open' division of a SQ competition a few years ago and it placed very respectably (like 23rd out of over a 100 entries)--folks at the competition dubbed it the 'stealth FJ', since it looked completely stock other than the head unit and small sub!

Now, I've just 'sold' the FJ (with audio system  :D) to my 25 yr old son; my new ride is a Lexus GS 350 AWD.  Installer in putting an Audison Bit One processor/DAC (to be fed directly by Ipod line out and also by stock head unit for CD's and radio), Hertz High Energy components, amp and a 10" custom sub in trunk.  He tells me he can make the GS 350 sound as good or better than the FJ, we will see, install is not for a couple of weeks.

Drive it on weekends, listen to it every other day.  :D

I go to some of the local get-togethers and take a listen to what's out there now, and still enjoy Steve's work.

I'll see if I can post some pics of my system.

The HU is a Pioneer Stage 4, the DEX-P99RS.

Speakers are the Morel Supremo tweeters, with Elates midrange and 9"midbass.  The 9" are under the front seats, the others are in the doors in the stock locations.

Focal Polyglass subs, 2 8" in the trunk.

Have an Arc Audio amp driving everything but the midbass, a JL 300/2 is wired to them.

Finally got wise and got rid of my CD's.  Got an iPod classic and loaded my discs using Apple lossless option.

Makes driving in crappy traffic tolerable.

Back in the day an 1983 Mercedes with all Nakamichi amps, Alpine head unit, crossovers to Boston coutic speakers, infnity tweeters, and polk. In NY though they steal them so home audio for me now.

Bought a 2010 Ford Escape XLT last August.  It contained the standard CD-radio, 4-speakers-in-the-doors Ford system.  Being a hi-end audiofool...cough, cough... :o
...that system wasn't nearly good enough--all the music came from around my knees, the music was gritty...edgy, the system had no low bass, etc.  So first, new door speakers.

I again chose the SonicCraft 6-1/2" drivers I've bought literally by the several dozens over the years...
[That CC speaker had 4 of those in its bottom, too, for a total of 10.  That system didn't last long.  :-(  ]
...and installed them in the 4 doors...

Then, after installing and finding unsatisfactory a pair of top-mount tweeters, I installed a pair of Polk home-system TL1 Sat speakers atop the instrumentpanel.  This got the orchestra in front of me, finally, and improved the overall sounds considerably.  All this was still driven by the stock CD-radio.

Also around this time I rewired the LH- and RH-rear-door speakers in series and then wired them across the rear-channel-positive-only speaker leads.  This of course reproduces only the difference between the 2 channels.  The music is somewhat low in level and rather 'phasy' and spacious, and this added a bit of spaciousness to the overall sound.

For bass, and not wanting to add any kind of box that'd be in the way too often, I installed a Lanzar 10"-driver one-piece powered SW under the RF seat.
That added the missing midbass and some bottom-octave bass.

Replaced the head unit with an Axxera ...7200 CD-receiver, which is OK but not great (I think).

BUT...I felt things could be better still and started investigating poweramps.  After a highly trusted audio 'guru' told me that I really wouldn't like the sounds of modern digital car-stereo amps and a long-time friend agreed and pointed me at the old Apine V12 series of amps, I found on eBay and bought an Alpine MRV-F303 amp in excellent condition for only $146 delivered.  It's rated (14.4VDC in, 4 Ohms out) 50 Watts, continuous, times 4 channels.  It had the hi-pass filters that would eliminate overdriving both the front-door and Polk TL1 speakers with too much bass, and under the LF seat it went*.  I chose Audioquest cables for the front speakers--Type 2, 4-solid-long-grain-copper-conductor cable for the instrument-panel Polks and G2, a stranded type for the frontdoors.

WOW what a difference, all good.  Then within the Polks, I removed the cheap 300uF 'lytic cap in series with the 'bass'/MR driver that was used to limit bass and increase power handling.  Also replaced the cheap 'lytic in the tweeter network with my last of the great-sounding BlackGate NonPolar caps, and the sounds got even better.  The system now sounds quite good on an absolute scale.

Of course, being an incorrigible tweak, I can't leave well-enough alone, so I bought another 'F303 amp and a Service Manual and started scheming on how to improve the sonic quality of the poweramp.  So...

In the powersupply, I replaced both pairs of 'chicklet'-type 0.047uF and 0.056uF bypass caps with 0.047/100 MultiCap RTXs ('styrenes). Was tempted to replace a pair of 330uF/35s 'lytics bypassing the output-stage rails with maybe hi-Q Nichicons, but didn't.

Preamp section:
1. Replaced all 4 coupling caps, cheap 'lytics, in channels 1 and 2 with 0.47/200 SoniCap Gen.2 'propylenes.
2. Replaced all 8 DC-rail-bypass caps, 4.7/50 'lytics, in all 4 channels with 4 7.5/200 SoniCap Gen.1s bypassed with 0.47/200 SC Gen.2s.

Output stage:
1. Pulled all 8 DC-rail bypass caps, 0.47/50 'lytics, in all 4 channels. Replaced with 4 5.1/200 SC Gen.1s bypassed with 4 0.47/200 SC Gen.2s plus 4 more of the latter on the board.
2. Replaced all 8 emitter resistors with 5W Mills MRA-5s, noninductive wirewounds.

Just for kicks, and every time I do something like this in this car-stereo amp I laugh at myself, I replaced all the magnetic, brass-plated-steel speaker- and power-wire hold-down screws with nonmagnetic stainless-steel screws and lockwashers and brass flatwashers.

Have turned the front-door drivers into woofers with 75Hz LP filters (and raised their level) and have lowered the HP filter on the Polks to 75Hz, both of which increased mid- and upperbass and overall warmth.  The system sounds quite good, and I'm HAPPY. :D

* Meanwhile I had purchased a new Soundstream REF4.400 poweramp, but it was too long to install.

Greetings,

I picked up a 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i to replace my aging 2000 Nissan Maxima and had an aftermarket stereo recently installed.  Pioneer DEH-80PRS headunit, Hybrid Audio Technology (HAT) Imagine I61-2 6.5" component speakers, JL HD900/5 amp & Knukonceptz IC's and 12AWG speaker wire.  Picked up the speakers in a dented box sale and the JL amp used for good prices :D

Front doors were treated completely with sound deadening.  Speakers were installed in the stock locations.  System was auto equalized by the installer through the Pioneer DEH-80PRS head unit.

Very happy with the installation by AudioWorks (Newark, DE).  I was a little leary of getting a Pioneer head unit after years of Alpine equipment, but the DEH-80PRS is a high SQ product.  Very clean and has a lot of flexibility with capabilities of running up to 3 amps.

Regards,

NB

I don't know about audiophile, but my car isn't exactly a rolling listening room. I once had a Caddy STS that qualified, and the Delco/Bose system in that car was very satisfying. The stock stereo in my '08 S2000 CR was pretty miserable, so I upgraded it – nothing really extreme. In a car like this, why bother?

The head unit is a Pioneer Premier DH P710BT – largely to get hands free cell phone operation. For the most part, I use an iPod Nano as a source. I opened the door covering the radio and rested the iPod on it for this crummy photo.

The rest of the system is all JL Audio. The amp is just the little 300/4V2 - gets the job done.

I can't remember the model of the JL speakers in the doors (tweeters up high and mid/woofers down low), nor can I really get a photo of them without pulling the door cards, but here's a shot of the 10” stealth sub in the trunk.

It's a decent system - better than the 'room'; that's for sure. Then again, in this car, it's more about the driving experience than the listening experience. :D

Very tempted to get a Burmester system in my next Porsche. Expensive, but way less than other Burmester gear.

Just picked up a second pair of Hybrid Audio Technology (HAT) Imagine I61-2 6.5" component speakers to add to the rear doors.  A very impress set of audio speakers by a small company who puts out a truly quality product.  :thumb:

My last audiophile system consisted of an Alpine 7949 with optical to the DAC in the trunk.  It had time correction with a microphone.  Excellent deck.  Speakers were Vifa XT25 tweeters that I installed in pods made of pcb.  7" drivers were doped paper ScanSpeak (of which I forget the model).  Sub was a 10" unit by Lambda Acoustics (hand made in Florida)...crossover was a BLue Tube Driver and McIntosh pair of amps....

Even the home audio store manager where I hung out was impressed by the soundstaging and imaging....:-)

There was a custom cloth cover for the drivers.

I also used a Scan Speak tweeter...best of all.  Scan Speak 2904/6000-01 tweeter
