Title: Your most favorite BRYSTON power amp
Post by: PRELUDE on 25 Jun 2012, 11:54 pm
OK,Why do not tell us which one is your most favorite and why if possible.I am not asking which one is better then others or start a argument between 14B & 7B.
I always liked the 4B and 28B might get a little pricey for some folks but if I have to vote for one only, then it would be the 7B.I have a lot of experience on this amp from ST to SST and could make a lot of people go this way. They bought it and still very happy to keep it.
So my vote is for 7B.

James,
I did search before start this poll but if we already have something like this and I missed, please take this one off. :thumb:

Not sure if this counts; I didn't vote.

For me, it is the newest amp I can afford in the used market that is a 4 or bigger (need the power for my speakers).  As much as I'd like a new amp, it's out of my price range:(

I'm now up to a 4B ST and enjoying it.  I'd love to move to the SST2 platform some day; maybe 7's (28's would be nice too!).

I think the 4BSST2 is the sweet spot value wise but I own the 7BSST2 and have cast my vote for it since they are great amps.  The 28B would be nice but it is out of my $ range.

Seems there is no entry vote for the B100...

Had my eye on the 7BST in 1999 then the 7B SST.  Finally pulled the triggger on 7B SST2's 01850 and 01851 in '09.  Am not looking back.  7's RULE!  :thumb:

I own a latest version 4B SST2, but would love to step up to a 14.
With prices the way they are now its not going to happen any time soon though. Maybe grey import can help me out here.

I vote for B7-SST, but I own B14, B-100 and Power Pack 120.
I would like to have B7-SST, but the fortune brought me B14 plus 2 Power Packs 120 for the price, less than a single B7-SST.

I own a 4B-SST2 and am very happy with it.  It's got more than enough power for my needs; however, if cash was of no concern, I would not hesitate moving to a pair of 28's - hence, they have my vote.

I vote for 4BSST2  :thumb:

Here is why:

1) It has sufficient headroom to drive any standmount speakers in the world!
2) Perfect for a small to mid size room.
3) Very compact in size and when you add in isolation platform say SRA it is still a comfortable size for most rack.
4) I could have gone bigger monos or stereo but the 4BSST2 continues to surprise me with its quick transient response from absolute silent to explosive orchestra and its delicate highs delivered with such finesse...its as if the 4BSST2 is telling me "hey bud, I am not DONE yet!!".
5) Lastly this 4BSST2 was sold to me by a kind gentlemen whom in spite of struggling with breathing difficulties took the time and patience to shared with me why Bryston amplifier is the only amplifier I would ever need in my Audiophile journey. He has since passed and I am grateful for him.

The 4BSST2 is a very good amp!

"very good amp!"...vegas...I'm surprised at your lack of enthusiasm when it comes to mentioning the 4B.  The 4B-SST2 is a wonderful amp, the anchor in the Bryston family of amplifiers.  I'm not sure how much it makes up of Bryston's overall amplifier sales - perhaps James could let us know the latest stats - but, I'd guess that around 50% of Bryston amps are 4B-SST2 in C or P series.  That said, if I was asked which Bryston amp would be my "Favorite", I could not say anything else then the 28B-SST2, I can't see the 4B outperforming the 28B in any area - except WAF and strain on your back and biceps...LOL!

lol. Well, it's great actually, and I own one, an SST. But, imo, the 7s and 28s are the better amps. This is after extensive auditions.

Interesting poll or we should call it a racing between 4B and 7B and no vote for 6B.
If I did not have what I have now and somebody would offer me a pair of 28B or 2x6B, I would not even think about it and I would take the 2x6B for a three way active and would out perform most of the 1000w amps in the market.
Now,the 28B is an excellent amp which we all know it but the problem is the speakers not the amp.
If I would have to use the 28s, then I had to use some exceptional drivers and simple design or a full range driver(which is hard to find) and most likely I would go with a passive pre amp.
PASSIVE PRE AMP is not for everyone, but if you have enough gain from your power amp(28B SST2)and desire a clean sound then it is an excellent choice.
How ever you can change as many fuses, power cords, cables, amps or speakers that you are desire to but remember that the crossover inside your speaker box will always be considered as your first and worst enemy in your audio system.

'favorite' vs the one I bought..
Difficult.
The one i bought: Bryston 4B-SST2
the one  dream of owning: Bryston 28B-SST2 (pair)

I just do not have too much interest in the 7's...
If i went for monoblocks, i would go for the 28's.

Not only was he kind, but a very wise gentleman. I am sorry to read of his passing. I do believe there is great karma in your amp. Please enjoy it in great health for many years. I really liked you post. Another reason why I keep coming back to the Bryston Limited forum even though I don't own Bryston. I will someday proudly own Bryston. Thank you!

I'm still really happy with the endless hours of musical enjoyment that I get from my 2001 vintage 4B-ST.

I actually look forward to powering the big system up and listening.  The depth of stuff that you can hear is just amazing.

Hi Tdinut, I used to call him up and chat about everything under Bryston and he has wealth of audio information in his head. Its really sad to see him go...he is the one whom strongly recommend me to take up the RM16 (now BIT16) knowing I have limited space to house monos in my setup...

I have to agree we have something special here in Bryston Audiocircle. Though at times we may not agree eye to eye on every subject of discussion but thats how it is in a big family  :thumb:

To name a favorite Bryston amp is a tough call, indeed.

I do like the 2B-LP for its simplicity and its 1U form factor.

I love the 14B for its sheer endless power and its finesse at low levels.

From an engineering standpoint, I like the multichannel amps, namely the 9B and the 6B, best. With the 9B ST a new and improved signal routing and grounding took place which distinguished this amp from the previous ST amps. And if you take a 6B SST into your hands you literally feel its compact power. The top cover of the modules looks even more precious as it is not the usual metal sheet used on the other Bryston amps. The additional care taken on the 6B amps is one reason why a 6B, being more or less a 3 channel version of the 4B, costs more than 50% more than a 4B. The only thing Bryston missed on the 6B is that they moved the power module to the other side of the amp's chassis, compared to the 9B (looking from the back, it's located on the left for the 9B and on the right for the 6B). This way, the heat sink of one channel is on the very left side of the amp's chassis when seen from the back. When rack mounting the amp, some racks offer brackets where one can put the equipment on, supporting the equipment chassis on the left and the right side, taking torque from the front panel. Those supporting brackets would, however, cover the leftmost channel's heat sink completely and therefore cannot be used with a 6B.

This, however, did not prevent me from voting for the 6B 3-channel amp as my favourite Bryston amp, for its sound and its look and feel, especially with the black 19" PRO front panel.  8)

Cheers!

Markus

Could be nonsense, but the handles look more rugged on the PRO - they seem to have screws on their front faces, an upper and a lower screw on each handle.
Those handles are most useful.
I'm taking the pictures at Bryston.com as reference.

A "purist" might choose the Consumer version with the reasoning that if the input level does not need to be attenuated, why have the input go through the additional input level potentiometer of the Pro model?

Steve

True, and that was my reasoning too until I noticed the handles ...
Not only that, but also the fact that another potentiometer is another piece of circuitry that could eventually fail.

I asked James if having those extra controls would hinder the audio signal. He said no effect.. As for the pro handles they are more serious looking and can be removed if desired. In some ways I have thought that the pro version may be more thoroughly tested or built for reliability ( but that's just a notion.) When I do get a new 4B it will be the Pro in black. :thumb:

Some of the consumer models have handles on the back, really convenient as you can carry them to position and place on
carpet back up to connect everything. They also protect the connectors a bit.
Maybe it's just the heavier amps?

That's an other world  8)
I'm actually running my 7.1 system with 7B's (R/L) + 4B (C) + 9B (surrounds)...

I'm also getting a couple of mono Mark Levinson 436 these days and will try them with the 7B's.
Will see witch one i'll keep...

Hi all,

Made some changes in my system.
Everything's on XLR now (Supra) and i got those great cables from Nordost (SPM reference speakers on bi-wiring) for my speakers.
Also tried the Mark Levinson N°436 mono blocs against my 7B SST2, and, well... i'm switching to the ML.
I was just blown away by the 436.
We did a lot of direct A/B listenings and the difference was amazing.
I really loved my 7B's (what an amp !!!), but will start a new life with these ML  8)

They are a bit slower and more colored than the 7B's, but the stage/life/naturalness provided are just from another world. They also go deeper (infra) than the 7B's...
So impressed !

Even though i do not own them, not am I ever likely to be able to afford them, the 28B-SST2 are my holy grail of amps..
I own a Bryston 4B-SST2 and it is wonderful.
Everything I add to make better sound, the 4B-SST2 is right there amplifying that sound. Amazingly great amplifier. And the longer I own it, and work on making my system better.. The Bryston 4B-SST2 keeps right up.. I may never get to the limit of it's ability to produce great music.
So after carefully considering i voted for what i own, the 4B-SST2.
Apparently I am out of the doghouse..

I voted for the one I'm still waiting to arrive home: the 4B SST²
At FaxCargo [WarehouseReceipt 72473] - since July 27 2012, FedEx had picked it up at Buffalo NY on July 24 2012 [AWB: 003816930098454], WT to Bryston done on July 10 2012.
One month resting at FaxCargo Air & Ocean, 10913 NW 30th Street Suite 107, Miami FL 33172.
I didn't know it would take one month to start its freight, but I would do the same again.
Now I know Miami is really far from Montevideo, Uruguay - one month is worth waiting for my new amp to arrive.

Maybe next Monday Sept. 3, FaxCargo will finally receive the order to ship the amp.
FaxCargo didn't receive the instruction to make shipping throughout August ...
It might be arriving at Montevideo airport on September 10.
I hope so.

Fernando.

I have had a pair of PP300 SST monoblocs for a few years now and they get my favorite vote. I have them mounted to the back of the AV cabinet, so they are literally and figuratively transparent.

Wasn't joking when I named the 6B 3 channel power amp my favorite Bryston power amp... ;)

Unfortunately, only the three 6B SST at the bottom are here to stay, as the SP-3 only supports 7 channels and my speakers are not bi- or tri amp capable. Currently offering the top two on German Fleabay...

Anybody have experience in adding a second pair of side surround speakers and a digital delay to give them their own distance adjustment? In the long run, I want to use all 9 channels available.

Cheers!
