Title: Rotating power plug disassembly
Post by: Doublej on 7 Dec 2018, 11:08 pm
I want to run a flat cable extension cord through the space between two kitchen cabinets. The cord will fit fine but only if the plug is removed. Does anyone know if a rotating plug can be easily disassembled and reassembled?

Something like one of these.

I'm actually surprised to see 4 screws on the plug, which looks like it could be disassembled, as most extension cords have molded plugs.

If it does come apart, I'm guessing it wouldn't be very easy to re-attach as the conductors are likely crimped to the terminals and could be difficult to try to re-crimp and/or solder.

It might just be easier to grab a new replacement plug which has screw terminals for the conductors, like this one. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Eaton-15-Amp-125-Volt-White-3-wire/3568876 (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Eaton-15-Amp-125-Volt-White-3-wire/3568876)

Cut and splice the cord, leaving the rotating plug intact?

Steve - thanks for the tip. I will check it out.
thunderbrick - I had thought of the cut and splice but was looking for a more elegant option.

If the splice is inside the cabinet, that's the way to go.

There are also threads such as these which may provide some options (have not read thru all of it) - https://www.diychatroom.com/f18/ext-cord-inside-cabinets-63352/

If you cut the cord so the hot line splice is like four inches from the neutral line splice, up can also TIE the middle between the two splices tightly together  with zip ties to help avoid any pulling apart.  then you could use ordinary wire nuts.
I agree hidden between is where the splice would be good. Or behind so it is invisible to sight.
