Really great job on this video and I look forward to others.

Having been to Earl's home to demo and later purchase a pair of Abbey speakers myself, he is extraordinarily knowledgable and offers unique insights, while at the same time being very personable and humble regarding his accomplishments. I especially appreciated this interview, as most only know him by his DIY forum posts and perhaps some technical papers. The podcast captured the interesting (yes, intellectual!) person I enjoyed meeting a few years ago. Well done!

I have had a good deal of conversation with Earl. What he has always emphasized is the need to look at the audio reproduction system as a whole. We tend to focus on individual components without considering how they affect the overall system. From that standpoint, the loudspeakers are the most erroneous of anything in the playback chain. Reasonably well designed electronics don’t have to be expensive and good enough should be just that in his opinion with the focus being on getting the best designed loudspeakers into the space.

Lidia, Earl’s wife, coined the phrase ‘audio tarot’ for us audiophiles who have the firm beliefs that may not hold up to scientific rigor. This made me laugh and has always stuck with me.

Went to his house once where he impressed upon me the need for multiple subwoofers.  BTW his listening room is similar in size/design to mine!

Too many people forget that the room is one of the most important aspects to deal with to get good sound. 

Part of why I love living in modern times is you can do things like download the acoustic measurement suite from Studio Six Digital, run pink noise through your system and see on you iPhone in real time an RTA or FFT graph of your room's response.  You can even walk around the room and see how things change based on location.  Stuff like this just didn't exist 10 years ago, or it was very expensive specialist software.
