Any BP-25 Upgrades Planned ?
« on: 13 Nov 2004, 11:29 pm »
James,

With the announcement of the BP-26, I was wondering if there are any plans to provide an upgrade (other than the new power supply and DA option) for the BP-25 ?

Thanks.

Hi Jethro,

No plans on upgrading the BP25 at this point other than making the MPS-2 power supply available for those that want to add it to a BP20 or 25.

Hi James,

The new BP26 caught us a bit unawares, though I am reminded of a certain hi-fi magazine in the UK that said that the BP25 was in need of a cosmetic update…

I have read through the press release on the Bryston website, and am trying to understand how the BP26 unit itself differs inside from the BP25, i.e. what’s materially different other than the cosmetic update and the new power supply that complements the unit?

Putting it differently, if I upgraded from the MPS-1 to the MPS-2, would the combination of MPS-2 and BP25 sound the same as the MPS-2 and BP26?

HI Richard,

The MPS-2 power supply is the main difference so using the new supply with the BP25 would give you the same performance as the BP26.

Thanks James,

I for one would be interested in an upgrade kit that includes the MPS-2 & cosmetics update etc for the BP25 & new remote to bring in line with the BP26. It would be cool to have both power supply and pre-amp matching like the nice picture in your press release...I think you'd entice more people to make the upgrade that way. Of course the right price is also key :-)

"Attach up to 4 different Bryston components" I take to mean to the new power supply...not familiar with the whole Bryston range but can't think of other components that would use this feature yet...hopefully a sign of new things to come.

While I'm on the subject, I'd like to reiterate my call for a Bryston universal player that handles the hires formats (SACD in particular)...of course decoding in the SP1.7 or even stereo hires decoding in the BP2x range would be schweeet. Have not followed the other postings very closely for a while - is there any update you can give us?

James,

I have a BP-20. Could I use the new power supply with my BP-20. What would be the cost of the power supply only? I bought my BP-20 about 1.5 years ago.

Also what performance improvements would be realized?

HI All,

The MPS-2 on it's own will be $1200 US.
The 26 and the 20/25 are identical other than the new killer cosmetics of the 26 of course.
The new supply provides better control in the bass and an overall greater sense of space and ambience. It also solidifies the soundstage images better.
I am still listening and comparing but so far those are the obvious differences I have noticed.

Hi Eric,

The MPS-2 is being manufactured this month but we are already heavily backordered. I would say any new order coming in would be the first week of December for delivery.
Yes you can use it with your BP20.

Last question:

Do you have to have a remote to use the new power supply. I don't see a manual power switch in the picture, and my BP-20 does not have the remote option.

Hi Eric,

No remote required - the on/off switch is on the bottom right-hand corner of the MPS-2.

I recently bought a BP-25 is there anyway I can upgrade to the BP-26 without shelling out $1200 for a MDS-2 power supply. I paid just $2000 for the BP-25.

Hi,

No I am sorry there is no way to uprade except to purchase the MPS-2 power supply.
The retail on the BP26 is $3195 US so it is $800 more than the BP25.

MPS-2 vs MPS-1

Hi Mr. Tanner,

I recently purchased the MPS-1 power supply for my BP25 and I was extremely happy with the results. I was wondering if the sonic attributes of the BP25 are improved even more so by the MPS-2 as compared to the MPS-1.

Hi YYZ,

I have only been listening to the MPS-2 Power supply for about 2 weeks. So far it has better overal bass response, better images and a much better sense of space in the soundstage.
Still listening but so far this is what I have noticed.

Do not put your power supply and pream the way it shows in a press release.  Put it on the other shelf, away from the preamp - after all this is the reason behind a separate power supply!  When it's three shelves away, cosmetic details are not important - your problem solved and your sound improved at no cost at all :-)

Hi There,

The separate chassis allows for excellent shielding of the power supply section so placing the preamp on top is not a problem.
