5V USB power supply?
« on: 16 Nov 2018, 09:11 pm »
Hi all.

This isn't quite power conditioning, but it's related...

I have several accessories in my audio system that aren't in the signal path, but use cheap SMPS wall-warts that are almost guaranteed to be noisy.  These supplies all use USB-A connectors to supply 5V to the accessory.  (Accessories include my IR repeater, the hub for my universal remote, etc..)

I'm hoping that I can find a decent linear power supply with a minimum of 2, and ideally 4, 5VDC USB-A connector outputs.  Does anyone have such a device that impressed them enough to recommend?

I could look at something like an HDPlex and get a bunch of adapter cables to deal with its XLR outputs, but that's really overkill, and it would be much cleaner to have actual USB outputs so I can just use the DC power cables that came with each device.

There is a 15W 2-output PS available from China from a bunch of suppliers, but I'm not sure how the actual quality lives up to its marketing.  (Plus, I'd prefer 4 outputs instead of 2.)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

brj,
I'd avoid the specific Ebay 15W 2-output PS  in your link.
The internal pictures of the power supply (looks like based on a single LT1085 regulator) does not match the description(power supply based on STUDER 900 power supply circuit).

I use an Acopian 5EB200 Linear Regulated power supply.
https://www.acopian.com/single-l-screw-m.html

All Acopian power supply's are designed to last forever so buying on eBay is OK, $30 + shipping.

Acopian also has a A & B Gold Box series with tighter regulation
https://www.acopian.com/single-l-goldbox-m.html

There is an Acopian A5MT510 (load: 0.005, line 0.005, ripple 0.25) on eBay for $12. The ad says it is 10v but the A5MT510 is 5 volt and 5.1 amps.

You will have to make your own USB-A power connector, snip off the B end from any USB cable and connect the red (+) and black (-) to the power supply.
Oh yea, exposed electrical connections all over the place so you may want to put the box in a Tupperware tub with some holes drilled for ventilation.

Thanks, guys - appreciate the input!

Alfi, I hadn't had a chance to look up the circuit named yet, but hope to this weekend - thanks for catching that.  (Though admittedly that example was the result of a 2 minute internet search to start the conversation, rather than something more fully considered.)

WGH, I've been aware of the Acopian supplies for years and heard nothing but good about them, especially the gold A series.  My system is enough of a rats nest that I'd have to look at encapsulating it in a more permanent manner, but it's worth considering.  That said, I don't recall multi-output versions off-hand... I'll look later this weekend.

If folks are aware of more ready-made examples, I'd appreciate the pointer!  Thanks!

Look for the Acopian 5512T9A Gold Box. No used ones around at the moment but there are so many Acopian's around that could quickly change.

12v @ 1.2a

Paul Pang makes a nice 2 rail linear 5v/3.2a double psu for $349. I use his excellent V2 usb card in my music server (with an Acopian 5v psu of course).

I've used the 5VDC Acopian modules.  It's turned out to be one of my more successful DIY projects.  I've built two of these, and have been happy with them.

One of mine has a 5EB200 (2000mA) module and one has a 5EB150 (1500mA) module, so they're somewhat limited current-wise.  I'd guess you'd have to look at the current demands of your devices. Anyway, I really need only one of these power supplies, and maybe none depending on my configuration.  So, PM me if you're interested.  (I don't want to turn this into a trading post listing.)
