Cornet2 RIAA capacitors- 630 volt caps needed?
« on: 5 Apr 2013, 09:19 am »
In the Cornet 2, C202 is specified as 0.047 uF  630 volt

Does the voltage across this cap really get that high?  Would a 400 volt P-I-O cap break down in this circuit?

Electrically 400V is OK, but I'm more concerned about capacitance precision and probably how stable the PIO will behave in the position.

Yeah I know what you mean;  you can get 2% tolerance film caps, most PIOs are 10% or 20%.  I have some Russian NOS 0.047 uF PIOs, they measure like 0.055~0.058 uF.   Not good for an RIAA filter.

I have some Sprague 0.047 PIOs they measure 0.046 ~ 0.049  but they're only 200 volt parts.

You can probably get away with 250V caps in that location, but use 400V to be safe.
